Soap & Candle Making

ingredients for making soap and candles

Hey,

i am in a quandry about the basic ingredients

for making soap .

i have melted down lard (pork) and have also melted

down cappings from extracting honey(strained and cleaned)

what else will i need to make soap, besides the molds and

the scented ingredients ??

almost 3 days and no answers
i guess nobody here knows how make soap
or else they dont want to tell ??

I make melt and pour soap, so I don't know the answer to your question.

Hi Ann, Just wanted to let you know that the scent from any rose will not come through in soap. You must use a fragrance oil to achieve that unfortunatley. During the saponification process the petals will become brown as well, so do not expect any color from them either. You can crush the dried petals and put them on top of the soap, tons of soapers put botanicals on top, however, they may look pretty but become a total nightmare in the shower or tub. If you are looking for a place to learn how make soap I highly recommend the soap forum I frequent. We have over 5000 members now and some very very experienced soapmakers that contribute tremendously. I would also recommend you start reading the archives section first from the start of the forum (nov. 2002) and work forward. You will no doubt learn all the do's and don'ts in regard to soapmaking. Hey bubblefairy, What kind of soap did you make with parsley? What is chickweed? I haven't made soap in awhile and now is probably not the time to get back to it. Our house is up for sale - a showing every couple of days it seems, sigh. I will be so happy when it's sold. I used a book, The Soapmakers Companion, wonderful recipes, everything turned out great. Well, the milk and honey soap was a bit soft. Maybe I should have let it cure longer but it was so nice and smelt good enough to eat. I made one with calendula petals from my garden so I understand where you're coming from - totally addictive, fun and everybody who received a bar of soap as a present acted as if I was a genius.

wait - I forgot to add (sorry, I was out making an igloo and I'm exhausted) that these are mainly if your product is considered a cosmetic - bath salts, bombs, lotions, scrubs & rubs, lotion bars....not M&P base soaps. But I think if you write that your soap does something like moisturizes or relieves itchy skin, then you MUST list all ingredients. Sorry for the confusion

I haven't made any soap. I'm looking for soap base recipes. I have 1 soap base recipe, the person that supplied that took pics and inclued them in the recipe. That soap base turns a red-ish clear color (from the pics). I have no ingredents because I have no recipes minus the one I mentioned. I am looking for Saop Base recipes that come out a white-ish to clear color. It doesn't have to be a perfect "clear" it can be cloudy. I just want to be able to add my own color to it and it be that color. Thank You

Making soap from fats and lye is a very rewarding, but very exacting, process, Zeke. There are hundreds of recipes, but you should start off with a very basic one. Read, read, read... the instructions and warnings about the lye and proper utensils before you start. You should understand every step BEFORE you start making your first batch. You need all the containers, thermometers, etc. gathered before you start.

Don't allow any children or pets around you as the lye can badly burn! Allow yourself a whole afternoon (preferably a whole day!) for your first batch.

Your public library will have books on basic soapmaking. Additionally, there are many, many sites on the Internet with recipes. There used to be (and probably still is) a basic recipe on the Red Devil Lye container!
