Soap & Candle Making

Best Soapmaking book recommendations

I've been lurking for a couple of days and have already picked up much valuable information thanks to you all. Any recommendations for a 1st book on soapmaking? I'm new to this and would love a good read on the subject.

Thanks in advance for your help.

When I started I went to the Library and took out about 10 books and scrolled through them to get basic ideas and recipe ideas.

You will get the hang of it very quick.

Sorry that I cannot give a specific book

Elle, thank your for your reply. I will check out the library, but I was hoping to weed out any books that were not worthwhile reading. If anyone has a preference I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks again, Judy

If you want to grow alot of these you need to start them in open flats. Get some plastic trays from the five and dime. You are looking for something that would double as the bottom of a cat litter box. With about a 1/2 inch wood drill bit put about 12 holes in it. Six of them on the curve of the bottom to side. This is so if sitting flat it won't fill with water. I use a compost soil with a little sand and mix 50% with miracle grow soil or peters which is sold in our area. Fill about an inch from the top and water thoroughly. Add more soil if needed to keep an inch from the top. Lay out seeds flat with about the same space as the seeds are wide. Cover with 1/4 inch of soil mix. Mist top of soil until real wet. Set in semi bright light or on porch but not full sun. After they have had three or four leaves come out strong you can gradually introduce them to more sun. Don't worry about thinning out after they start sprouting. Leave in the tray and fertilize as required. Donts soak and don't let dry out. Leave them in tray for first year, then plant them out or in pots. You will end up with over 50+ a tray and are great for starting a whole bed with one tray. Hoped that helped you some it has worked for us for years. Warning; cats love to lay in these flats of young Amaryllis. Here is a link that might be useful: Town Square

Best book recommended for hardy gardening?

If you have a choice about microclimates here in the Bay Area, I'd suggest the Sunset zone 16 is the ideal, especially if you are attracted to trying to grow the largest amount of tender subtropicals. If you prefer warmer summer weather and don't much like fog, then look for places to live that are Sunset zone 15. Some nursery web sites that will give you ideas would include Annie's Annuals, San Marcos Growers, Monterey Bay Nursery all have excellent web sites with tons of good photos and descriptions. You might also enjoy the web sites and Flickr photos of the San Francisco, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz Botanic Gardens and the Ruth Bancroft Garden. Another book I'd add to your list is the EBMUD book on Plants for Bay Area Gardens. Welcome to California, and enjoy exploring our California natives, the exotic succulents and protest family members from Mexico, South Africa and Australia, and all the high elevation subtropicals from the Andes, Himalayas and Borneo, etc etc. Sometimes it really seems one can have it all here, especially in those virtually frost free zone 16 microclimates like the Berkeley hills. Oh, you will have to get used to the idea of earthquakes from time to time..._

The best book(s) for veggie gardening in OK
Q
Comments (2)
I don't know that there are any vegetable garden books specifically related to Oklahoma other than Louise Riotte's books. However, as written, they were intended for a national audience. I think it is just because we know she was from southern OK (Ardmore) that we treasure her books so much. I like all her books, and listed some of them in the previous thread about gardening books I'm going to link below. Many of my favorite gardening books that I rely upon are mentioned in the link below, but I have a couple of new favorites that I don't think I'd read at the time last year's book thread was written, so I'll mention them here. "The Texas Tomato Lover's Handbook" by Dr. William D. Adams, published in 2011. Dr. Adams enjoyed a long and distinctive career with the Ag Extension Service in Texas where he tested tomato plants year in and year out with the help of Master Gardeners in his county. He also maintains his own kitchen garden, and sells his excess produce at market. If there is anything you need to know about how to grow tomatoes in our climate and soils, he covers it in this book . I love, love, love this book so much that if I had to get rid of all my gardening books and could keep only one, this is the one I would keep. It would be really hard, though, for me to get rid of the next two. "Homegrown Vegetables, Fruits & Herbs" (a Creative Homeowner book), by Jim Wilson (of Victory Garden fame) and Walter Chandoha, published in 2010. This book was written/photographed by two men with over 100 years of gardening experience between them. Best of all, Jim Wilson gardened in the south, so the book is well-balanced for all regions of the country, which is not necessarily the case with all books geared toward a national audience. This book is outstanding. If I was a new gardener who was just getting into growing veggies, fruits and herbs, this book would tell me everything I needed to know in order to know where to begin, what to do and how to succeed. I've mentioned this next book many times before. Even though I've had it for almost 3 decades and practically have it memorized, I'd panic if my copy was misplaced and I couldn't find it. Dr. Sam Cotner's "The Vegetable Book: A Texans Guide to Gardening" was published in the mid-1980s, and I am on my second copy, having totally worn out the first copy about a decade ago. Dr. Cotner was the head of horticulture at A&M before his retirement, and that was the position he held when he wrote this book. I learned how to grow veggies from watching my dad do it, but he was very quiet and didn't talk about what he was doing or why he was doing it--he just did it. So, I learned the how from observing my dad, but from Dr. Cotner's book I learned all the why's and wherefore's. It was this book that taught me about the effect of soil temps and air temps on plants, which may seem elementary, but most of us don't know those things when we're just starting out. Once you understand the effect of air and soil temps on your plants and their productivity, everything else just falls into place. My favorite guide to growing herbs is "Southern Herb Growing" written by Madalene Hill & Gwen Barclay with Jean Hardy. No one was/is more qualified to write about southern herb growing than Madalene Hill and Gwen Barclay, except perhaps for Jim Long. All his books are great too. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention "Texas Gardener" magazine, which I've been reading for a couple of decades now. Although it covers all aspescts of gardening in Texas, I find its info just as appropriate for OK. It does cover all sorts of gardening, everything from lawns to trees and shrubs to water gardening, flowers, fruits and veggies. It seems to me that it has at least as much emphasis on fruits, herbs and veggies as on ornamentals, and I love it. So, that's my two cents contributed to this discussion. Best book-club books of the recent past

I just posted our selections on the 2011 Book Club choices thread. (I tried to post the list earlier, but my Firefox browser crashed just as I was finishing, so I turned off my computer in frustration.) Since you've asked in this thread, I'll repeat the list: Winter's Bone by Daniel Woodrell A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah Biography Night (individual choice) Traveling with Pomegranates by Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor Our community One Read book (title as yet unknown) Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick Shanghai Girls by Lisa See My group has already read several of the the suggestions that were offered in this thread, and generally we liked all of them, so I think we'd like the others as well. I will keep this list handy for future selections. Thanks again! -- Kathy

By "soapmaking," Judy, do you mean you want to mix fats and lye and actually make soap, or do you want to use Melt and Pour blocks? Usually the books are aimed at one method or the other, seldom do they cover both types of soapmaking. Let us know what type you are looking for and I bet you'll get some good suggestions.

Thank you Red Confetti, I'm already receiving an education. Actually I'm interested in reading about both methods to see what they are all about and if I need to get two books in order to cover both methods I would be glad to do that. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Well, I hate to see you just sitting there, waiting for book suggestions, Judy! I hope by now you have checked your local library (Dewey classification 668.12 and 668.124 are good places to start). There are hundreds of soapmaking books, of varying quality and of course everyone has their favorites.

Here are Amazon links to a couple, not necessarily 'good' ones, but ones that have great pictures. And sometimes the pictures make everything so much clearer when you are learning something new.

Just read the reviews on the pages, and also look at the other soap book links. Once you get started browsing, I'm sure you'll find what you are looking for.

Natural Soapmaking by Marie Browning This one also has other stuff like bath salts, bath oils, scrubs, etc. It does not teach you how to actually make soap. She uses bar soap, grates it up, and incorporates other ingredients.

The Complete Soapmaker: Tips, Techniques, & Recipes for Luxurious Handmade Soaps
by Norma J. Coney Again, this one is primarily about grating and reforming bar soap. But it does have step-by-step instructions on making a simple lye soap.

Art of Soapmaking by Merilyn Mohr I used this one quite a lot when I first started making basic lye soap using Red Devil lye and lard. It has lots of recipes for different types of soaps... laundry, shaving, leather, etc.

I also have one (not on Amazon) that I got at Michael's (I think) called Soap Making 101 that is just a wonderful picture book with 'recipes' all of which are using the premade glycerine bars, melting them, adding color, fragrance and other ingredients, to make cute, fun bars.

Whatever you do, pick a recipe, read it over and over again, and then try it exactly as it says the first time. Don't experiment the first time you make lye soap.

I read many books and recipes before I made my first batch, took notes, found the most basic recipe, and went from there. And be careful! Lye hurts!!

Thank you Red Confetti for the recommendations. I did go ahead and purchase "The Soapmakers Companion" by Cavitch. Its seems to have quite a bit of good basic information, but I will go to the library and see if I can find the books you have listed.

Thanks again, Judy

Hi Judy, nice to see an Okie here! :)
I like to make glycerin soap. It's quick, fun, and good for my dry skin. One of the books I like is Melt and Mold soap Crafting by C. Kaila Westerman.

Have not been on my computer for ages due to illness & computer break down. Please help me. Quite awhile ago I sent for a box of m&P soaps that were samples of all kinds. Made them up with great sucess. Would like to order more. Do you know if they still do that. If not do you know of a good reasonable place to order some. Grandson is getting married, giving a shower and thought basket with soaps, gels and such would make nice prices. Thanks for any help you can give me. Oma baker

What you probably ordered was from SCFI.
From what their site says you can only get samples once.

I think wholesalesuppliesplus.com was selling some of the SCFI bases. Don't know which they had or if they still have them.
I like the "regular" base that wholesalesuppliesplus sells.
haven't tried their shower gel bases or any of that line though.

Hope this helps somewhat....

You can buy SFIC bases in small quantities from kangarooblue.com (located in Illinois) or Acorn Soap Supply (located somewhere in the west). I have purchased from both of these places and both are very reputable and have great service. I would not purchase SFIC from WSP; it is overpriced, their shipping is outrageous, and the SFIC base I got from them was a very pour quality- wasn't anything like SFIC should be- it felt like a block of candle wax instead of a block of soap wax. In fact, I really thought they had sent me candle wax mistakenly. SFIC bases are the only soap that we can use because of our allergies and sensitivities to additives. The other bases that WSP offers are excellent, I understand, but are a different formulation that SFIC. If you don't need a specialty, hypo-allergenic base, the regular WSP bases are much cheaper than SFIC bases.

Nature's Bouquet has smaller sizes of soaps (2LB I believe) for $1.50 LB/2LB Block, if you buy the bulk size it is $1.30/LB. This is for white and clear, the goat milk only comes in 20+ block.

www.naturesbouquet.com

From what I remember ( I don't use anymore) their shipping is reaonable and they ship quick

Good luck with your project

Great recommendations from the other posters! I also like "Soapmaking for the first time" by Linda Orton. It's carried at Barnes & Noble and Michaels. It covers both cp and mp as well as a wealth of other products and ideas for presentation and marketing of the product... which we all know is how we get the customer's attention first!
