What size book do you prefer?

I 'd like to get a scrapbook for my older daughter for Christmas. She's expressed an interest in it and I think it would be a fun ongoing project for her. I've seen two different sizes of pages; 12 x 12 and 8-1/2 x 11 I believe. Do you have a preference? Also, what other items would you suggest to help get her started?

I'd go with the 12 x 12. I think the larger size gives you more options as far as page layouts, room for more pictures, etc. Some basics to get her started would be journaling pens, adhesive tape runner, some colored paper, templates for cutting shapes (circle, oval, etc) and maybe a pair of fancy-cut scissors and some stickers. Hope she enjoys it!

Thank you Linda! Good point on the 12 x 12. I hadn't thought of that. That's the size I will go with. I don't feel near so lost now in knowing what to get. I'll be taking your list of suggestions to the store with me. Thanks again!

There are a jillion rose books already out there. (And I have a lot of them!) Personally, I can do without another book on how to plant a bareroot rose and how to prune in the winter. If I could create a rose book just for me, it would be an annual that had pictures and profiles of all the newly released roses. Such pictures and profiles would be taken and written independently from Jackson & Perkins, Weeks, Meilland, Austin, etc. I would also like to see each of those roses put through standardized tests regarding various features. You could have a blackspot benchmark, a powdery mildew benchmark, a last-in-a-vase benchmark, a fragrance benchmark, height reports from various parts of the country, etc. It would be like a Consumer Reports evaluation for roses. With a book like this, you could actually make a more educated decision prior to purchasing. It is my understanding that roses that are chosen for commerce still have to be grown for several more years in the fields in order to have enough to distribute. Love the modness of it all - and thanks for showing the beginning of the progress. I was wondering where you got the darling hearts and checked pattern - then looked up through the posts. From your plates! Never thought about using more recent plate patterns - I'm not much into garage sales because my mother was so obsessed with them. (not meant as a dig to anyone who likes them - just that I was recruited to drive her everywhere.) Oh, and I brought a heater into my chilly spare bedroom where I work - that really helped with the cutting. Susan

What do you all do with your rose books you want to either sell/give?

I put mine in monthly rose society raffles. Some rose societies also have a lending library. You can also give them to rose novices who still have that spark of all-things-roses excitement. Your generosity can mean a great deal to the person just getting into rose growing. I still wish all these rose pictures had a scratch & sniff feature.

That's great. Many have different reasons why they choose what to do. I have yet to figure out my favorite, but thus far I am in love with the Mr Lincolns HUGE flower and stuff your face into the center rich and great fragrance. I almost want to plant two. It seems to grow tall stems and huge flower but takes up little room width wise. Red as Red can be which makes me think of starting another thread about color. The other is my Sterling Silver! What a very nice shrub and great fragrance. The flowers almost look fake, a weird color of off white. Then my other favorite is the Barbara Streisand...It's amazing red rich new leaves as they emerge into dark green with dark red and then the fragrance that knocks your shoes off. I am almost wanting to buy another of this one too. Rebecca, the description of what you gave me is exactly what I look for in Roses. This is only my first full year of growing them successfully since coming here. I use to kill any and all of them in the past before I learned of protection and treated just cut stems with product to protect from borers. Borers were the reason why I would lose all my roses..Not anymore! Now it's time to maybe get one of what you described, or something else just a strong as the ones I have in fragrance. I do notice many roses resemble each other fragrance which prevents us from having to buy many unless you are looking for a different color.

I agree with Linda, I prefer the 12x12 lots more room. Although, there are some really pretty 8x11 papers that you can incorporate into your 12x12 album. Your Daughter will have fun with this project and it gives you some ideas for Christmas, Birthdays etc. If you know what pictures she might have ready to scrap, maybe get some stickers etc., to coordinate with her pictures. Buy her a really good pair of scissors also. Nothing worse than when it looks like you chewed through the picture! I would also add a corner rounder and a 12" cutter. These are almost "essential" pieces.

I agree with Linda, 12x12 gives you a lot of room to work with. I came across this article on choosing an album a while back and thought it was useful. Hope it helps.

I always use the 12 x 12. I used the 5 x 7 once, but doesn't leave you much room to work with.

I think a fun thing added to the gift would be 'fun', say a punch shaped like a foot or flower, they add interest to the page, a few sheets of coloured pages, an acid free jell roller pen.
