Super white countertops - Does honed make that big a difference?
Comments (2)So, I think I've figured this out. I finally was able to get a piece of "leathered" finish Arabescato (close enought to honed finish) to play around with. This particular piece didn't have any movement and was just a solid light grey. I etched it with vinegar and lemon juice, but like before, it doesn't stain. When I compare the leathered finish etching to the polished etching I did not think it was less noticeable on the leathered finish. In fact, what seems to help hide it the most is the movement or variation in the stone. So, for myself, I will save the $600 it would cost me for honed finish and make sure I buy a stone with good variation to help hide any potential etching. I also noticed that the Super White has quartz going through it. This "clearer" part of the stone does not etch and will scratch glass. The whiter part of the stone behaves exactly like marble. So it appears that it's an amalgam of quartz and marble. That would be why sometimes you can get it to scratch glass, but that most of it will still etch. I'm not a geologist and I have no idea if that is possible, but that's how my samples are behaving....See MoreWhite Cabinets with White Countertops?
Comments (28)firsthouse, if you can believe it, we STILL don't have a countertop! (Our contractor has been dragging his feet on the rest of the kitchen as well, but that's a different story for a different day). The countertop delay is all my fault...well, mostly. I HAD settled on Super White and was actually pretty excited about it, but then the stone yard where I had my slabs on hold called to say they made a mistake -- the slabs I wanted were already on hold by someone else! Those slabs were the only Super White slabs in my city. Such a bummer! I really love the white quartzites and wish I could get some! I have looked at photos of your gorgeous kitchen many, many times now. Soooo drool-worthy!...See MoreChanging counter tops in kitchen with white cabinets
Comments (37)I think the granite looks great: very classic and a big improvement over the tile! I'd definitely look into undercabinet lights. Before, the white counters reflected the ceiling light back up under the cabinets. The dark granite holds onto the light and makes the undercabinet areas a little cave-like. Lighting will make a big difference. I think the previous suggestions are excellent: painting the wall in the kitchen, along with finding some colorful accessories. I had a small galley kitchen similar to this one, and I was amazed at the difference a bright blue rag rug and a few blue dishtowels over the stove handle made....See MoreCountertop Geology, Part Six. Comments (807)My Sea Pearl had bluish tones that turned greenish once in my home. Will they give you a sample? My stoneyard did not so I took a chance. Did you see the chart Karin_MT made up? Maybe you could go by her description of the various levels of quartzite. Will they let you do a water absorption test? The crystalline quartzite is easy to spot. Look at the names on the right, find one in your stoneyard and look for the grains, cross bedding, crystalline structure to see which one comes closest to looking like your stone. You might try either lemon juice or vinegar on a small paper towel in a zipper bag or maybe you could use an extra small empty hand sanitizer bottle. Don't ask...don't tell??? Don't forget to test it in different spots on the stone, not just one spot. Same with the glass test...use different spots. Read this article that Karin wrote about telling white stones apart. https://usenaturalstone.org/telling-white-stones-apart/ https://usenaturalstone.org/how-to-be-your-own-stone-sleuth/ And this one is excellent. https://usenaturalstone.org/properties-of-quartzite/...See Moreanntn6b
