The ultimate irony

Last month I had to get DH and I new cell phones. I didn't want our plan upgraded because we don't even use all the minutes we have now. So the cingular clerk assures me all will be the same. Well, you can already guess the ending, right? Looked at my bill online and we had two different plans for the phones.

No biggy, I think, I'll just CALL them and get this straitened out. WRONG! They insist I must go to the cingular store where I got the phones to solve THEIR mistake!

A phone co. can't resolve a phone bill on the phone. HUH?

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!

I love dealing with phone people as much as I like going to the dentist. Having been with 2 different companies currently the same as yours, I've beat my head against the desk trying to get rid of a few "simple" kinks.

My advice:
1. Take advil before you go to the store/kiosk.
2. Don't talk to a kid in school...they promise you everything and quit the next day to go back to school. Company won't honor all the discounts they say you can have.
3. Getitinwritinggetitinwritinggetitinwriting.
4. Take some more advil.

We had over 3,000 minutes left over last year. Lost them Dec 31 and started over. I have to say I feel safer in the car at night and know my girls are safer too. I can't see me giving it up. Don't have a camera phone and I don't know if I want to get that techie. Kids of course have all gone over.

What will they think of next...

I have to watch the bill every month, they seem to like to change things on a whim. Easy for them, always difficult for us.

Wish I could just get rid of the home phone, that $24 a month changes to $40 with all the regulation/tax charges. And water is almost as bad charging for sewer use. Would go to only a cell, but I am into TIVO and the bad habit requires home connection.

Loved your list Georgeanne.....it fits with everything we do that has a bill attached.

My biggest gripe is with health insurance. I swear the same person answers everytime. She is rude and will not give me information unless I know the "correct" question to ask, it is wearing to go through her silence at the other end while I figure out what she needs from me.

On to having better things going on....

I live in central NY, they say its zone 5, but its really 4. I have a glass 8 by 12 foot gh. I don't use it in the winter as it is free standing and would cost too much to heat. I do use it to grow up my seedlings. I put them in around April 8th, and have to heat it at night for about 2 weeks, until it warms up enough. I then put those plants outside, and put my orchids in it. When I heat it those first few weeks in April, I go through a 20 lb. propane tank every 3 days or so. After that, it mostly stays just on the pilot light and that seems to be enough for another few days. At that point, I turn it off during the day. I also have two, 50 gal. water barrels for solar heat and another couple of 30 gal. containers. It has a cement paver floor that helps hold some heat. My goal is to move it and attach it to the house. Then I would just get a 100 gal. propane tank for heat and keep my orchids in it all the time. I would have to raise it up 3 feet to match a door to the house, so I would gain even more room. Sterling

In addition to all the other comments posted lambasting the biased and misinfomed article liked above, I would point out that the current consensus is that we are NOT going into another ice age. Rather, we are on our way out of one. The overly simplistic timing scenario used when this "entering the next ice age" theory was advanced in now discredited, and it is apparent that we are on our way to higher temps due partly to the natural effects of this change. This is NOT to say that global warming is not occuring. To be sure, the man-made changes that we have rought are contributing their part. Another point needs to be made. Many people make a cost benefit analysis and say that if GW is NOT actually occuring, then we are throwing good money after bad installing pollution control equipment in plants to battle something that is not occuring. This is both short-sighted and fallacious. In almost EVERY instance where a pollution control measure was implemented, the industry implementing that control saw improved efficiency and actually SAVED money after implementation. So from a purely capitalistic standpoint, governmant coersion to implement these controls is justified. It forces recalcitrant, short-term thinkers, whose only goal is to please equally short-sighted stock holders, to adopt a long-term strategy that in the end benefits everyone. Capitalism, just like socialism, only delivers all of its proposed windfalls with the benefit of omniscience. With temporal myopia, it is just as prone to long-term folly (although it is better at fixing the screw-up) This is something you will NEVER get those at the CATO inst. to understand, as they can't seem to focus farther than the bottom line of their portfolios.

Well it could be a worse spot for roses - being so close to a busy highway and two gas stations, at least the deer won't eat them... plenty of sun... and their leaves should stay relatively dry. I have to wonder how well a cafe can do in this spot with so much road noise. The funny part is she says she wants it gone because "someone might fall into it and get hurt" ...as if falling into a mature rose bush wouldn't hurt you. The landlord says it's a shame and he might insist on keeping it (after cutting it back hard), if he didn't really need to rent this place. True, there are cacti native to 45 of the 50 US states... who wants to guess which states don't have any native cacti? This plant is O. engelmanii, which is native to Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and NW Mexico. If you're wondering what our native cacti look like here are some pictures and descriptions: A primer on Washington native cacti So I went back this morning and got a couple nice big pieces (not easy since they break apart easily) - I'll pot them into 15 gallons or something and then at least it will be possible to "replace" it in some sense, if desired. I'll post more photos and information later. I do have pictures of it at a much larger size, and in bloom - at one point it was getting close to 6' tall before the snow in Dec 08 and Feb 09 knocked it down a bit.

TG - I think you have found the true cause of our high crime rate - our culture. This discussion is timely, as I happened across an article on Buzzfeed or some such website where it listed what the state departments of other countries advise when coming to the U.S. While we did receive high marks for being friendly, foreign tourists were warned about robbery, high crime, and an armed US citizenry (one country said don't get in a fight with an American because they are likely to be armed with a gun). I thought to myself, oh please, the United States has to be one of the safest places in the world for tourists. But as I read more about the crime problem here as compared to other countries, I'm starting to see why those warnings are issued. Jas - I support gun ownership, with limitations. I support background checks, including mental health screening. I support regulation of the type of gun you are permitted to own. I see no need for an AR-15 in the home, for example. These are the weapons that can take out an entire office/classroom/movie theater in a matter of seconds. But, as is true with most things political in America, politicians won't meet in the middle. The only two acceptable views are anybody can own anything or guns should be plainly outlawed. Any politician who strays too far from those party lines is swiftly reprimanded.

Thanks for commiserating with me. Tylenol's my drug of choice, swallowed down by a few ozs. of Pepsi. : )

Things turned out ok but still what a bother. My old plan was very OLD so it got dumped automatically when they made the changes to the new phones. I got the same clerk as the first time and he spent over an hour trying to get things back the same. Wasn't gonna happen. But they gave me a comparable plan and took off a bunch of previous charges, so not so bad. We did need a bit of an upgrade, too.

The worst part is my windshield was hit by a rock on the way home. And I had just got it fixed from one that hit it the week before!!! Caltrans is doing some major highway work so these big dumptrucks are constantly on the one major road we all have to use to get anywhere. Ticks me off cause it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't gone out to take care of that blasted cell phone stuff!

Sandy, can you get her name next time and report her? We had to do that with one of the gals that works at our doctor's office. She snickers, rolls her eyes, makes things out to be a big deal, as if the money were coming out of her pocket, etc. She's better now although she does slip an eye roll in now and then. I keep telling myself - so sad to be her.

Georgeanne, our new phones take pics but I haven't used the feature yet. They'll probably charge me family portrait rates if I do. lol!

Whenever I talk to tech service people on the phone, I always ask what the weather is like there. Interesting to know that I'm talking to Calcutta, or Manila...guess they don't have to worry about long distance charges...

Hi Diana,

I know what you mean, when we started traveling a few years ago we got a Free-To-Go plan from ATT. Pay for the minutes up front and no problems with a bill not finding us while we were traveling.

Worked pretty good although while in the phone companies in the southern area treated us like second class citizens and would not let our calls go thru except early an or real late at night.

We get coverage about everywhere.

Now, we have a message on our phone that we need to go to a Cingular phone store and get a new phone and new service, sigh....I hate the thought of that.
