what to do about left-over marble

We are currently having the fabricator make window sills for us with the remains of our kitchen counters and I wonder what the etiquette is for left-over marble. I assume that there is more left which I might like to keep for a future purpose (like making a side table?) - I could also ask him to fabricate a piece for me to use an extra pastry board to use on the dining table....

I'd be interested to hear about what other people did with their remaining marble or whether they just left it with the fabricator.

thanks annac54 - very interesting thread. I think the stone business is quite a racket - since the stone yard only gives the slab prices to the fabricator there is no way to know if your fabricator is making a large profit off the stone....

This will be the 4th year for my bottle of Infuse (Bonide's version of Banner Maxx) and it's working fine so far. I think the question of shelf life has been put to the manufacturers of the the three most poular systemics (propiconazole, tebuconazole and triforine) several times in the past by rose forum members and the usual answer is three years or more. Freezing does no harm to triforine (Funginex) or Infuse because these are formulated as true solutions. Tebuconazole is formulated as an emulsion and freezing can break down an emulsion. I suspect that shaking would probably reestablish the emulsion but I'd certainly prefer to avoid the risk. The universal advice with mixed sprays is to use them up immediately and not attempt to store them. Once diluted, the sprays are not as stable, those that are emulsions can break down, and it's unsafe and probably illegal to store a diluted spray in your (unlabled) sprayer.

I'm not completely clear, but I'll make some assumptions and you can let me know if I've missed something. You made zuke relish which (I'm assuming) required simmering the zucchini in a seasoned brine. You then used this leftover liquid (now diluted by water released from the zukes) to "pickle" cherry tomatoes? IF that is correct, then no, it cannot be described as safe. It "might" be, but without know the exact process and recipes you used, there's no way to tell. Even with that information, it would be very difficult. Basically, you used a much weaker brine on the tomatoes and don't know what the water/vinegar ratio is. I'd put those tomatoes in the fridge and eat them up in the next couple of weeks. The only time you need to take paint or stain to the hazmat drop is if it's oil-based. Water-based products can go in the trash if it's just not salvageable (for instance, if it froze and curdled, or it's just too old - I've had the pigments in old paint and stain settle into a solid brick at the bottom of the can). Here's how my previous town asked that people dispose of latex paint: Get yourself some sand or plain old cheap kitty litter and mix it with the paint to a thick oatmeal consistency. Leave the can lid off until the paint has dried into a rock, and chuck it right into the trash. If you wish to recycle the metal cans, scrape all the "oatmealed" paint into a heavy trash bag (put the trash bag in a box or bucket first, just to keep it confined) before it dries, allow it to dry out, put the metal can in the recycling and the hardened paint into the trash. I think last time I had a bunch of those little BM sample pots (a lot of the time from the first smear I know it ain't gonna happen, so 90% of it's left over) I asked on here if anyone wanted them, and they ended up getting mailed halfway across country! Another lovely poster was kind enough to give me all HER sample quarts and "whoops, that didn't come out quite the way I thought it would" paint which ended up being enough to paint almost my entire house interior for sale in 2007 - she saved me a couple of hundred dollars.

Cut the apple up, warm the pieces and serve over vanilla ice cream. Or slice up the apple, melt some chocolate, and dip each piece in the chocolate, either half of the piece or the whole piece, depending on how much you like chocolate. How does that sound? LOL

Everything is a racket - that's haw business make money - even the one you are in. They buy things and sell them for more than they cost. They also process them to add value too.

Now, back to the stone countertops - How were you charged for the work ??? Probably x # of $$$ per sq. foot - right ?

Now let's say you have 42 sq. ft. of countertops. You'll be charged $65 a sq. ft. The fabricator has to buy enough stone (slabs) to make your tops. What are the chances of him getting a slab that is "exactly" 42 sq.ft - That's right ZERO CHANCE! SO, he'll get xtra or whatever your slab you chose and there will be leftover material , sometimes a little piece and sometimes it'll be almost an entire slab.. Think he has to pay for that xtra? Yep, you're right again - he does. And...............tell em the best part Mortimer - the customer gets to pay for it - just like always. It is rolled into the "overhead". In this case that leftover mtrl; (usually a guess based on historical averages) is rolled into the $65 a sq. ft. price. So you are paying for it in one sense - but not paying in another.

Do you whine about not getting the scrap material that was left over from manufacturing your car??? Why not, that aluminum, steel, copper and glass has real $$$ value on the scrap market - and you paid for it- Right ?

Many fabricators will be glad to give you the scraps like end cuts and sink cutouts, just ask. But, if you think he's gonna smooth that cutout and place an ogee edge on 4 sides for free so you can have a cool platter or cutting board - well that's not going to happen. He will process that cutout for an additional fee for you though and you'll be saving on the material cost.

Someone had a post of putting small feet on pieces and giving them as gifts to be used as a trivet or cheese board but does anyone care to share if the sides are unfinished does that seem silly-I guess I mean unpolished if the granite is polished?

I don't think the OP was whining nor did she say she wanted the work for free. All she asked was what people did with their remaining marble. I responded to what we did on the linked post.
