Filling edges of particle board

Existing cabinet doors, replacement is not possible due to financial constraints. Face is vinyl overlaid, will be primed with XIM 1143. Edges are tapered on the back and toward the back, just raw edges. They will be primed, and hopefully filled. Drywall compound is one idea, but durability is the question. It would be after the primer, sanded after drying and primed again. Obviously the filler will be only in the irregularities of the edges. Have considered using lacquer-based glazing and spot putty after the primer. Bondo and similar materials would be quite a lot of work to use. Those probably would be used on the bare edges, primed after sanding. Suggestions welcome.

Minwax high performance filler.
It should not even take a whole can.

Will the cut edges show? The cut edges will also easily absorb water and cause swelling of the particle board. Multiple coats of poly can cerate a decent seal if water cannot sit on the surface. It will not look as good as a real suruface though. Minwax wood filler is a pale brown color, and would create a smoother surface, but would still need some type of top finish for protection.

Jesse Here is a site to check sag based on thickness and length. http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator/ Scroll towards the end for wood species, it has plywood and several options for particle board, not sure what the different numbers are, but I would check them all. I assume you will be adding shelf support brackets on the longer runs, otherwise, you would have to have very thick material to resist sag. In terms of dark mahogany stain, I would go with the cheapest wood species you can find, other that oak - oak has very porous grain

People pay an upgrade fee to use plywood because of wood prejudice. That belief costs them money. Hopefully, this will save them money. Or, allow them to reallocate the funds into an upgrade that they want. Yes, there are different grades. But most any mid level grade manufacturer and up uses the 45 lb and up board that is Carb II certified. For custom, you would need to ask.

I'd use a Rotozip and freehand it; it doesn't have to be pretty. As long as you leave some of the top and bottom of the sides to support the front and back of the cabinets you should be fine altering the sides.

Another option is to either use the edging material you buy in rolls, it looks like wood and is applied with a hot iron. The other option is to get a piece of real wood trim molding that you can attach to the edge with small nails and or glue and finish paint as you like.

We usually use a lightweight 2-component filler like Bondo but in white. Then finish with an orbital sander. It's not much more work than using spackle. Use the activator sparingly to get a little more open time.

:) I'd have to agree with the Bondo-type fillers -

actually the pink of the Bondo doesn't show through even a single coat of primer, so it's fine to use in a pinch.
