Help with Vintage Singer T&S 648 Bobbin

Hello all,

I am completely new to sewing and got a used Singer Model 648 Special Zig Zag without realizing they are quite finicky. I am trying to thread the bobbin (get it to sew) and can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I can't find any help online and am getting so frustrated :(. Somebody please help me figure this out. The person I bought it from said it needs a bit of tension work, but I can't figure out how to even do that.

Your first link didn't work!! The second one it looks like a machine i had back in the early 60's,think mine was a #549.I can't remember if that machine has the bobbin that you thread in place,or if you take it out and place it somewhere on the machine to thread it.Let me go take a look at that manual you posted and see if i can help you figure it out.Hang in there for a few!!

OK open your manual and go to page 7,read it and study the diagram.Make sure needle is in highest position.Open bobbin area,push that little lever to the left,and follow the directions exactly how they are written,and you should be able to do it.

I am trying to thread the bobbin (get it to sew)...

I'm assuming that you have the bobbin wound with thread and need to know how to start sewing--how to get the end of the bobbin thread up thru the thread plate. Those instructions are on page 22 of the manual.

Michelle ... many, many possible things. Is the needle in correctly? The flat side of the needle has to be facing in a certain direction. Do you have the thread started in the bobbin correctly (through the right slot in the holder and feeding in the right direction) ? Is the bobbin holder locked in place? Is the bobbin holder tension correct? If #4 is OK, is the upper thread tension correct? I have a 638 T&S......first thing is to make sure the buttonhole controls are in the off position. Is the pressure foot raised for bobbin winding? You say you cannot push the bobbin button to the left......does it move at all? Is there lint or thread blocking the button action......the slide plate must be open as much as possible without removing it from the machine. When I wind the bobbin on mine, I hear a distint click/snap sound. Did you get a manual as it has information that will perhaps help you more than I can? Make sure the bobbin area is clear of lint and threads.....the presser foot must be raised and the needle in the highest position. On my machine the needle position must be at C (Center) and the stitch width at 1. Hope this helps you somewhat. Budster.

Hi everyone.I have a singer 626 T&S. when I turn the wheel by hand towards me and the bobbin hook is at about 1 o clock, the wheel gets tight. I continue turning, its ok until I get to same spot. its been getting Jammed. the bobbin case seems a little loose. I timed it. the hook picks up Loop".Before" I put Bobbin case & bobbin back in machine, "it all works fine", & doesn't get stuck".As soon as I put bobbin case back in with bobbin", it gets stuck. I even turned right screw under slide plate, but it doesn't help. I've clean, oiled, re-threaded, put new needles in.I've tryed so many things.it was working good months ago, then, one day, it got jammed. Nothing in machine Looks broke. when I filled bobbin with thread, it filled about half way, then slowed down & stopped. It seems like its the Bobbin case, but it Looks like it's in great condition. I can't figure it out? Does anyone have any ideas to Help? Thank You.

childstar, I have some questions. i have several machines, including 2 Singer Touch & Sews. One is a 600E, which i think was made in 1966. The other is a 626, made in 1967. The 626 has nylon gears that fell apart in my hand when i undid the bottom to check. But the 600E has metal gears. Is it worth fixing the 626? And, if i see metal gears in the 600E, does that mean it is a good machine worth keeping?

Thanks for the replies. Strange and unfortunate that the video link didn't work. It seems to be working for me here on several machines even when not logged in.

Kathi, I am sorry for the confusion, but ci_lantro is right - I am trying to sew now and not rewind the thread on the bobbin. The bobbin already has thread on it currently. What I do is snap the tab down on the bobbin (the bobbin is wound clockwise and the thread is sticking out to the left, then I close the plate and turn the knob to move the needle - except that nothing is being grabbed :(.

If possible, try to view the link I posted to this one. Maybe it will work if hyperlinked.

ci_lantro - I did what the manual says I believe, but maybe didn't understand a step properly.

I looked at it again with the plate off and it seems that the rotating wheel from the video that is supposed to grab the needle's thread isn't doing that. The needle appears to be too far from it (maybe). Is there a way to verify this and adjust the needle to be tilted closer to the wheel so the thread gets grabbed?

OK, I just watched the video and I see the problem already. Instead of letting the bobbin thread just lay there, you need to grab the end of it, and pull it over the screw that holds the presser foot in (the one on the left side) and hold it taut. Then start sewing. You don't need to lower the needle first.
Now it should grab the bobbin thread automatically.
