Help with Vintage Singer T&S 648 Bobbin

Hello all,

I am completely new to sewing and got a used Singer Model 648 Special Zig Zag without realizing they are quite finicky. I am trying to thread the bobbin (get it to sew) and can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I can't find any help online and am getting so frustrated :(. Somebody please help me figure this out. The person I bought it from said it needs a bit of tension work, but I can't figure out how to even do that.

Your first link didn't work!! The second one it looks like a machine i had back in the early 60's,think mine was a #549.I can't remember if that machine has the bobbin that you thread in place,or if you take it out and place it somewhere on the machine to thread it.Let me go take a look at that manual you posted and see if i can help you figure it out.Hang in there for a few!!

OK open your manual and go to page 7,read it and study the diagram.Make sure needle is in highest position.Open bobbin area,push that little lever to the left,and follow the directions exactly how they are written,and you should be able to do it.

I am trying to thread the bobbin (get it to sew)...

I'm assuming that you have the bobbin wound with thread and need to know how to start sewing--how to get the end of the bobbin thread up thru the thread plate. Those instructions are on page 22 of the manual.

dody40 - This interests me so much that I hauled out my old T&S and had a look inside. The bright silver bobbin case sits so that the upraised lever in your picture (the part that snaps into the bobbins center is at the 6 o'clock position. In your second photo there is a dark gray clip off to the right side - in my machine that part moves over and snaps down to lock the bobbin case into position. My machine is from the 600 series and is a bit different from yours but from what I see the bobbin casing etc. seem to be the same. I might also ask that you check to make sure your bobbin winder (the button with the bullseye is not engaged - push it to the right to see if it is completely unsnapped - also shove your slide plate into postion over the bobbin casing a few times just to make sure. I will ask my DH to copy how to replace the bobbin from my manual for you when he has a moment. Don't worry between us all we will figure it out - fingers crossed. Budster.

Michelle ... many, many possible things. Is the needle in correctly? The flat side of the needle has to be facing in a certain direction. Do you have the thread started in the bobbin correctly (through the right slot in the holder and feeding in the right direction) ? Is the bobbin holder locked in place? Is the bobbin holder tension correct? If #4 is OK, is the upper thread tension correct? Here's a link to some Janomes on Amazon... the first two are relatively inexpensive and seem to get good reviews... Of course the best advice is to get a machine from a dealer, but I don't think either of the machines you are currently considering are dealer machines either... at least with Janome, there's a bit of quality and likely more dealer support. I didn't buy my machines at a dealer either (the vintage Brother and Bernina were from Craig's List and the computerized Brother was from Amazon) and the Brother and Bernina dealers had no problem servicing the machines and tuning them up for me. Sometimes people say that a dealer won't work on your machine if you don't buy it from them, but I've not found that to be the case... they were friendly and helpful and happy to tune my machines up for 100 bucks. Of course you're probably thinking that you may not sew enough to ever warrant a trip to the shop, but you never know when something might go wrong, and the less quality the machine is, the more likely problems are. With Janome, you might lose some features to get the extra quality for the same price (things like drop in bobbin or needle threader may not be present in bottom of the line Janome models)... you have to decide what is more important to you. The bobbin case doesn't move, it stays put. The bobbin turns as the thread gets picked up by the upper thread. There is a hook and race that comes around with the upper thread, that is the part that moves under the bobbin plate. The touch and sew models have a very clever bobbin set up, it is a bit unusual and unfortunately I don't have something close to a 626 near me to guide you. It's not difficult though, and it's easy to follow the pictures in the manual. The bobbin case should click secury into position and the bobbin should drop in snuggly. Do a youtube search on Touch and Sew in geneal, it will likely have identical bobbin area setup. There is a tiny setting lever near the bobbin not sure what to call it, it has a flat round top, it has to be in the right position for sewing. I hope you have the manual, double check threading. Also double check that the needle is put in the correct way, flat side facing backwards and needle threads front to back. The 626 model is the last of the all steel geared machines, it's a very good model, and I hope you know you have a machine worth spending time and money on. There isn't a single model made today with all metal gears, it handles layers of heavy to fine fabrics and it stitches very fine. If there's anything it is a bit more noisy than the the most silent Singer models, but it can be improved with oils like Triflow and Finish Line Ceramic Wet lube. They are perfect for vintage sewing machines, with added teflon and nano ceramics which add a noticeable smoothness to the machinery. Remember to oil all the points shown in the manual, if it hasn't been used in a while, you need to give it a drop or two of oilk every where, run it a bit and then repeat the following days. Triflow and Finish Line Ceramic Wet lube are ideal, but any good sewing machine oil will do. Thanks for the replies. Strange and unfortunate that the video link didn't work. It seems to be working for me here on several machines even when not logged in.

Kathi, I am sorry for the confusion, but ci_lantro is right - I am trying to sew now and not rewind the thread on the bobbin. The bobbin already has thread on it currently. What I do is snap the tab down on the bobbin (the bobbin is wound clockwise and the thread is sticking out to the left, then I close the plate and turn the knob to move the needle - except that nothing is being grabbed :(.

If possible, try to view the link I posted to this one. Maybe it will work if hyperlinked.

ci_lantro - I did what the manual says I believe, but maybe didn't understand a step properly.

I looked at it again with the plate off and it seems that the rotating wheel from the video that is supposed to grab the needle's thread isn't doing that. The needle appears to be too far from it (maybe). Is there a way to verify this and adjust the needle to be tilted closer to the wheel so the thread gets grabbed?

OK, I just watched the video and I see the problem already. Instead of letting the bobbin thread just lay there, you need to grab the end of it, and pull it over the screw that holds the presser foot in (the one on the left side) and hold it taut. Then start sewing. You don't need to lower the needle first.
Now it should grab the bobbin thread automatically.
