Attic Conversion - What do I need to know.

Mostly about Weight distribution.

At first we will only use this for only storage but down the line if appropriate we will use for living space.

Is there a place that I can find some basic info about weight distribution and anything else I might need to know.

Right now my joist are 2x4's and run perpendicular to my rafters. I was planning on popping 3/4' ply on the top.

First of all, 2x4s are too small for joists of any type of living space. Even as storage space, with 3/4" flooring, it is probably under-strength.
This is not something that can be planned by a novice.
You'll need to have an engineer design the required structural modifications before you will be able to get a building permit for this project.

You can plan on losing some of the headroom that exists to be able to shore up the joists enough to support even storage. Most jurisdictions will not allow living space with less than 7' headroom. Do you have enough headroom to even do this without popping the roof?

I think you were asking if you should insulate under the attic ceiling, right? The short answer is no, unless, you are up for the more complicated type of insulation such as might be used with a cathedral ceiling. This usually entails installing an overlayment ( i.e. actually above the insulation material and just under whatever is the lowest layer of your roof assembly) that has some ventilation channels. You can kind of get a picture of what is necessary by going to the Owens-Corning website and look at the diagrams for working on a cathedral ceiling. This is different from regular attic ventilation which is what I think the pp was discussing. However laying fiberglass batts (for example) on top of and at right angles to your attic floor joists and whatever insulation exists within them will help. However, it will render useless the floor for storage. Can you pull the attic floor and add some additional insulation (without compressing it) above what's there but under the floor? I have the same situation you have and have opted instead for keeping my usuable floor space over adding additional insulation. I tell myself that covering virtually all the attic floor with boxes of stuff must have some R-value. A good job of sealing up infiltration points all over the house and an extra specially good job sealing up/weatherstripping the door or stairs leading to the attic and caulking any ceiling penetrations in the top floor will make a big dent in energy loss, even if you wind up not adding any additional attic joist cavity insulation. I've done it as well, without the hardhat, and yes I poked my head. I just reached as far as I could and stapled as best I could and just put one between every truss I could get one to fit in. Besides, they are cheap. Your time is the only real cost. I actually did a paper baffle thing between the top of the wall and the bottom of the roof to hold my blown in insulation in place. The baffle thing had punch out at the top to fit around the styrofoam vent. I used the brand Durovent I think. I don't know much, but I think the idea that there is no such thing as too much attic ventilation (well, you know what I mean) is correct.

I'm so sorry. I was in your shoes this time last year. I knew our almost 13 year old German Shorthair Pointer was at the end of his life, and I was thinking I'd wait until after Christmas, but I realized that I needed to do it the right thing for him even though it was hard for me. We put him down on Dec. 17. :( I probably waited a bit too long, and I didn't realize how much stress I'd been under thinking about whether or not it was the right time until he was gone. There was almost a sense of relief. Missing him wasn't as difficult as wondering and worrying about whether or not I was doing the right thing. We all still miss him terribly, though. When the time comes, I highly recommend getting a vet to come to your house. It was so peaceful and less stressful than taking him to the office.

No there is not 7feet of headroom. I understand that this not "Legal" but I am not really worried about that. Living space is really ways a way. if I go down that road I would find an engineer to look at it.

Storage space is really the main objective. I find it hard to believe that with 2x4's and 3/4" is NOT sufficient. I mean I stand on the rafters now and I am 200lbs. I know I know weight distribution over time is different than momentary impact.

What is the best way to shore up the joists to make them stronger?

As a homeowner who inherited some "ways away" space, please take the time to do it right the first time. We inherited an upstairs space (storage converted to living before we moved in). We had some water damage from a leaking toilet and ended up with a $30k+ remodel having to replace the joists with the appropriate ones and popping out dormers for adequate head-room.

It may stink to do it up front, but please take the time to do it right.
