There was a story recently on local News about carbon monoxide detectors not working. It was quite shocking, since the detectors indicated they were working, but really weren't. It looks like you need to replace the detectors every couple of years, cause they stop working as they age.

Here's an exerpt, and the link is to the full story:

"While the fire department measured carbon monoxide levels topping 100 ppm, the digital read outs of the CO detectors read 63, 48, 44, 41, 135, 19, and 0. The digital readings are all over the map and they can be. Right now they don't have to be accurate. In 2007, Underwriters Labs will require them to have a margin of error of plus or minus 30 percent."..."I wouldn't trust a CO detector more than 2 years old. I'd toss it and get a new one. Unfortunately, I canÂt guarantee the new one's going to work," said gas detection expert Paul Clifford...
