Help with window treatment for family room and breakfast area

OK, I removed my yucky checkered valances from the family room and breakfast area. Now I desperately need help with window treatments before speckling over holes from valance rods (In case I'll go back to valances). I was thinking bamboo blinds, but basically they'd be open pretty much all the time. Privacy is not an issue. Because of the windows, any treatment needs to be mounted outside the frame. Oh, and there are French doors on the fire place wall between the family room and breakfast area.

But now I'm thinking that maybe I want some valances. I'm getting really confused because now I like French Toile or Provence...I've pretty much nixed drapes are out because there's not much space between windows and fireplace, plus the dog.

My style is casual, urban country, I have to admit actually a bit Pottery Barn, and I don't want to spend a fortune on the windows. I'm confused

Below are some pics:

Valance? Bamboo Roman shades? Another suggestion?
