Are you warm or cold?

OK, so it's the dead of summer and most of us have either been dumped on with too much rain or too much heat and drought.

Ordinarily I HATE winter but I'm longing for a day when temps don't go over 50 Farenheit!! Ahhhh, bring on the turtlenecks and wool sweaters.

How about you? Are you more comfortable in a warmer or a colder climate?

Funny I should read this just now!

I was just thinking, by the time August rolls around every year, I'm sick of baggy shorts & light-colored, lightweight tops.
Everything seems washed-out, worn-out, & sad.
My sandals are stretched, my hair is dry, & I'm sick of putting moisturizer on my feet.

I sigh nostalgically at the thought of sweats, closed shoes like sneaks & mocs, even pantyhose!
Sweaters, long pants, broomstick skirts... sigh.

Having been born in Texas & never experienced temps lower than 0 (& having thought I was gonna die from it!), I'd have to say warmer.

There are very few days when I can't go outside, & most of the time I can even work in the garden.

Sometimes I do harbor fantasies of snow-capped mountains, massive evergreen trees, & blue Himalayan poppies.

but it's just fantasy.

Hello hello.

See, in Texas *this* is our dormant season, when we're indoors because outdoors is too inhospitable.

While Northerners "sit by the fireplace with a glass of wine, looking at seed & bulb catalogs & dreaming" in winter, we're out there in our wellies, forking compost into the beds, pruning, transplanting.

By the time they're enjoying their summer growing season, we're inside "sitting by the air conditioner with a glass of iced tea, looking at Christmas catalogs & dreaming"!

or sitting in front of a computer screen wondering where the heck everybody can be...

I use Tom Clothier's website - it's pretty detailed, and pretty darned good. Not always perfect, though! My alchemilla alpina and balsamorrhiza sagittata have both sprouted, even though they were supposed to need a cold period - LOL, I'll get them in the ground in another week or so and hope for the best next year. I attempted to germinte some Fringe Tree seeds (Chionanthus virginicus) last year, and they supposedly require a warm-cold-warm cycle which normally takes 2 years, and I tried to shorten into one year. Collected the seeds in September 2009, sowed them in a milk jug and kept them inside the kitchen until early January. Then put them outside to get 3-4 months of cold. Despite that they didn't sprout this year, so I changed the potting mix and put them back outside for another year. I would have just done that in the first place, but thought it was worth an experiment. So maybe this coming Spring one or more of the seeds will germinate? Sorry I can't report any success with this type of seed - as yet!

Today was my last hurrah for leaves, they are all finally down and the remnants of Ida are headed this way tomorrow morning. I'm exhausted, I ache, and I wish I had a hot tub. Clean sheets are on the bed, and after a hot shower I'm climbing in! I like the idea of your to-do lists. I's good to hear you have a porch to winter store plants imagine if it gets to chilled at night you can simply open a door and share some inside heat or use a suplemental heater for a while With this in mind is it safe to assume your hot house is not attached to your house ? If you have a heater that works for you already I wouldn't suggest adding a lighting system (bulbs) to your hot house as the only sorce of heat simply because they wouldn't be on at night Emphisis on night: It gets to cold to often with colder temps at the minus (?) F degrees bulbs that are off aren't going to warm any area Some bennifits to a heater are it can turn on and off on an as needed basis by thermatic controls and timers helping maintain disired warmth though out the entire day and night. A draw back is loosing power for to long of time with out a second sorce on a colder day On a logical thought, a cold frame wont work for you but if it where to work you wouldn't need any added lighting to keep plants warmer I agree it's better and easier to grow some plants slower if ideal growing conditions cant be suplied with in a persons means if you dont push growth, it's not uncommon for a healthier plant to be seen in the future. Warmer weather is my type. It is cooling off now. Only 61* at 1:30 PM. Got on my jeans instead of shorts.
