Short storage solution for BR closet floor

We have a smallish walk-in closet. We're looking for a 1-drawer piece with a flat top to sit on the floor beneath the hanging clothes, about 24" wide (from end to end) and 18" tall. The drawer is for clothes, and the flat top a place to put shoes.

Does anyone know of anything like this or a resource that sells them? So far, I've looked at BB&B, Lowes and Home Depot but haven't seen anything like this.

Try Elfa at the Container Store. You can customize to your heart's content.

You're in luck, Jenn. I suffered the same dilemma until I found Closet Maid products at one of the big box stores that you mentioned. I've purchased numerous of these 24" high storage cabinets (some with drawers and others open (for shoes or such). They're hardly comparable with quality built-in storage, but they serve my purpose, look neat, and utilize the dead area between the floor and most hanging clothes.

Vith - sorry to confuse! I attached a picture of the front of our house which has the walk door. which is the front of our house. This is where the original garage door was when we moved in. The walk door just barely fits - goes from the bare ground to the roof. I've considered using the existing entry door on the front of the house (photo below) but the garage floor is 80 year old cracked, uneven concrete. Only recently has it occurred to me that if I eliminate this entry the floors could be brought up to the level to be similar to the rest of the house. If I put a dormer over the new door placement - as numbersjunkie suggests - won't I end up with a problem area up next to the house (where I already have mold on my shingles? My husband thinks that will create a water/snow trap. We haven't talked hip roof yet. His suggestion is to take the front slope of the roof up a couple of feet so the peak moves toward the back of the house. The new peak would cover my upstairs windows which I am set against. Thanks so much for helping! It's good to have other minds looking at this! The below photo is where the original garage door was. Along the wall which joins the garage to the house is a huge concrete fireplace and a bathroom. You can tell me to give it up. We're not moving any time soon, It's just a shame we can't use this.

I like a mix I saw a walk-in closet first time in my life when I first came to the States. I thought it's kinda neat)) When my late Grandma did her first and last remodel, in the eighties, she "borrowed" space between two rooms (we had three altogether, and it didn't go by bedrooms like here)-and that's how we had two big, not walk in but still quite big closets. That was neat too. It was a nicely sized apartment but we were six people there. Everything was very organized..had to be. But we had lots of free standing pieces..say my and my brother's clothes all except for coats went in a small wardrobe, and the wardrobe wasn't in our room, but in a different, bigger room, where Grandma and Grandpa slept. Books, we had in every room. We have a lots of books now too-but to be honest, it's but a small percentage of what we used to have when I was a little girl. One can't compare. In short, I still find the concept of built in closet pretty neat)) But I love free standing pieces too, a lot. I think the right mix gives one function, form, flexibility and beauty. So I go by that. Except for the garage..that's my DH's kingdom..and he abhores the thought of ruling there too..:) but doesn't want anybody's help as much as I beg. He thinks closets help, shelves help, this or that surface will help..no, nothing will help..I will help if you let me:) The concept is important, but it can't be fully functionable and enjoyable without people handling it, you know.

I have considered it! What I run into is-his room has one wall w/the living room, two outside walls, and the fourth wall is the closet butted up to son's bedroom closet in son's room. So just the one wall w/a regularly used room. Son's has the bathroom. Daughter's has the bathroom, living room and kitchen. The living room at least is a "quieter" room to be next to-there's no cabinets or pots and pans, shower, flushing, water running etc. If he was in the kids' rooms and had been off work only a couple hours and the three of us were using the bathroom trying to get ready for school, or in daughters room and we were in the kitchen getting lunches/breakfasts..ugh. We don't tiptoe around, nor is there excessive craziness in the morning but still, it's loud. He would balk at moving. His room *is* a skosh bigger, however! (enough that all of her clothes and all of mine would fit in it, and I wouldn't have to store them in the hall closet and our son's room, *and* she could still have a small vanity) Personally, it makes sense to me for all of us to round robin it-he go to son's room, son's to daughter's room, and daughter and I go to his room. He could put the bed against the exterior wall that faces the neighbor, under the window, which would put it as far away from the bathroom as possible, or under the other window, which goes to our backyard, tho it would be a bit closer to the bathroom. Round robin makes the most sense. Positive it would be a no-go. Not that I won't try tho!

That's a small amount of space. Get a bed with built-in storage drawers on the bottom and a slim armoire with drawers. Check Craigslist and make sure your measurements of anything you add will fit. Everything else should go on the walls--lamp, small bedside shelf, book shelves (though shelves you have could be used as a divider/bedside table.) You really have to give people photos of all four walls.

Target has very similar products to the one pictured above. Might be the same, not sure of the brand. I have bought ones with cabinet doors and open shelves for our bedroom closets.

Thank you! Closet Maid is closest to the type we have in mind. This one is exactly the type we need, and they're sold at Target. Whoohoo!

Yikes! Reviews at Target for those ClosetMaid drawers are not good, but these at Stacks and Stacks look very good.

I bought the one at Target like that and it's just okay. I wouldn't expect it to hold up to a lot of use. It's pretty cheap. I've had mine for a few years and it's still fine, but again I only open it once a month or so.

Such laminated particle-board cabinets might look sturdy but they aren't. The laminate is easily chipped and the drawer rollers don't tolerate a lot of abuse, but how much use will they be receiving in a closet? For me, the Closet Maid units have held-up nicely and they provide a tidy appearance for little cost. The system sold at Target offers the same wide range of storage options. Try them and toss or donate them if they don't suit.
