Each community has a Senior Meal Site that all are welcome to go to. I go as a guest of my mothers from time to time because I am not quite sixty yet. Soon, I will be. However, I want to share, that its a wonderful place to eat and to meet people. There are many couples as well as singles.

It's fun to interact with others. To listen to the adventures and trips they have taken. It's really great to focus on others rather then on myself for a half hour or so. Once a month they put out a news letter that details what is going on for the next month and the menu also. I keep it under my laptop.

I will say they are closed on weekends and holidays. The cost recently went up to two dollars and fifty cents. It is the best bang for the buck. Try it, you might like it.

I got this in an email recently and really really liked it and thought that I might share it.....

The other day a young person asked me how I felt about being old. I was taken aback, for I do not think of myself as old. Upon seeing my reaction, she was immediately embarrassed, but I explained that it was an interesting question, and I would ponder it, and let her know.

Old Age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body, the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror (who looks like my mother!), but I don't agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM and sleep until noon?

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60&70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not go ing to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what...

I'm going to assume rutgers is happy with the initial replies on this and forget about the question. In other words, I consider this thread to be officially hijacked. If I am incorrect, please, rutgers, reply now or forever hold your peace. If you look around the Internet at other gardening forums, too many refuse to acknowledge organic gardening as a program that can work. Of those few that do acknowledge it, those associated with Rodale are pretty much stuck on compost being the only "approved" (by Rodale) material to use; and tilling being the best preparation for the soil. Some other forums are beyond any hope of science providing answers. They want to contradict anything scientific unless it specifically agrees with they they have been saying. I have played in both those arenas. Too often there are dips into pure fiction and just plain hope. I'm going to ignore the followers of Jerry Baker because they are usually not hurting anyone with their approach. In my previous message I was just comparing the GardenWeb forums with the other organic forums I have seen. I was not comparing with an ideal perfect universe. In my perfect universe, the universities would have equal amounts of organic certified soil and un-certifiable soil (never any DDT for example) for research. There would also be equal amounts of funding and knowledgeable researchers ready, willing, and able to get going. And there would at least be someone in academia listening to the masses to see what they have tried and are claiming to be working. The research on corn meal against crop (and lawn) fungal disease ceased when the lead guy died in the 90s. I'd like to know why greensand greens up St Aug turf on alkaline soil after a rainstorm and nothing else works. I'd like to know more about why a surface dusting of baking soda seems to kill crabgrass in 4 days (in southern lawns). I'd like to know more about why vinegar sprays kill plants but a soil drench seems to feed them. I'd like to know if/how plants can control and change the sugar chemistry they send to the soil in response to environmental stresses they receive. I'd like to know more about foliar feeding of proteins on plants and the plants' response to that. I'd like to see someone take a nutrition approach to soil microbes and the food they eat (deerslayer probably saw that one coming and is groaning right now). Another thing I've seen is unhealthy competition among organic academes. "My organic is better than your organic." We've had people here who play that game and we have all lost as the GardenWeb masters kicked them off the forums. I'm not just talking about one person, either. Some of us are too easily offended by different approaches. Deerslayer, I'm not taking your organic approach to task. I'm just trying to keep you honest. I apologize for the language I used where you thought I was denigrating your message. I can see that, but it wasn't meant that way. I'm a work in progress in many ways. Regarding hit-and-run posters: I've been accused of that, too. Sometimes our time budgets allow frequent visits here and suddenly we can be called away in the middle of one or more threads. That's just the way it is. I wish they had a way for us to subscribe to threads so we could see what's happening.

Jane_NY, I'm a New Yorker who knows what you are talking about with Trump. I moved to the city in 1982, right around the time that "Dump Tower" opened. I remember how it started as a very expensive rental, beautiful on the outside, but with notoriously cheap finishes and corners cut on the apartments. At the time, I worked in an office with a pregnant woman whose husband's small company was involved in building it. Trump plunged her family into debt with his standard M.O. -- underpay but promise a lot of work. Then when the work is completed, don't pay the final bill, and tell the small businessperson to "go ahead and sue me." If you look into his business history, you'll see that he's constantly having to work with new people as he burns others in his wake. And remember the beautiful sculptural frieze on the Bonwit building that was torn down for Dump Tower? The one he promised to the Metropolitan Museum, but instead destroyed into rubble? I remember talking among a bunch of women about our worst date. One recounted being asked out by a guy who hid being married, was a boorish bore, and against her wishes, insisted on taking her right to her door while insulting where she lived, and then kicked her little dog in the face when he came to the door and sniffed Trump's shoe. I remember when he announced his upcoming divorce to the newspapers before telling Ivana and his children. My friend's daughter went to school with Ivanka at the time, and said everybody felt sorry for her. I felt sorry for Ivanka when she was about 15 and trying to be a model. She was tall but far from model quality. This was before her chin and breast implants, and you just know that the other models who had to work to get where they were must have treated her with contempt. It seemed to me to be kind of cruel to let her go through that, especially when they didn't need the money. But Daddy liked models. With all the money he made or ripped off, the only charitable thing I can recall Trump doing for the city was when he renovated the public ice rink that you can see from his apartment. Even then, he had to plaster his name on it. If there was a public figure from, say, Phoenix, whom everyone from Phoenix said was sleazy cheater and not to be trusted no matter how they appeared on TV, I would be inclined to listen to the people who knew him. I learned long ago that when someone doesn't trust, it usually means that they can't be trusted. I think of this every time I hear him whining about "fake news."

PM, I believe you! That's not that long ago, though. In old Jewish recipes from the UK (and some in USA and Canada), however, it really does mean starch. Really. I've never seen a noodle kugel at Pesach, though there is pasta made from Matzah. I don't know if it'll stand up to being kugelized, though. There are plenty of matzah kugels, though, and if you don't like the sweet noodle one, you'd revile the matzah version. It was Mel Brooks or Carl Reiner, I think, who called knishes ”the Jewish Neutron Bomb”—kills all the people and leaves the buildings standing. I've only had delightful knishes from the bakery, but same idea for the Northern European home cooking for matzah kugel. Coarsely ground matzah swimming in schmaltz and onions—well, swimming in the making but solid as The Wall in serving. Rectilinear. Worse when it's the sweet raisin one. But there's no getting around nostalgia. When I was little, all the elders were over for a different holiday, and my mother made blintzes (maybe Shavu'ot, when meals are often dairy). A tray burnt on top while being warmed, and my mother set them aside to deal with later. Someone being helpful added some burnt ones to the serving platter. My father's father and uncles started fighting over them! ”Just like Mamma used to make!” Re matzah balls, there are a number of kinds—a spectrum. Fly away which dissolve in the soup, light and fluffy which dissolve in your mouth, slightly firm which are light and can be slurped but don't come apart when cut with a spoon, quite firm which require chewing (or gumming) but not molars, and dense/hard and seem to be meant to be handballs more than dumplings they're so rubbery. And rocks. But the rocks usually aren't cooked through. The rocks are inedible. The best fluffy ones are that way because of eggs. The falling apart ones, though, are merely waterlogged. Mine are a bit fluffy on the outside, and somewhat firm in the middle. No one brings their raquets to the table. ;) Making spaetzel is more fun…

Hey Linda, it's "old lady" me again...

If you are not sixty yet, why on earth would someone say that you are old. OK, you've had challenges, but to survive requires maturity and wisdom. Sometimes the effects are that your body breaks down, but if you take care of yourself, that's only for a short bit. Time is ageless and beautiful and wonderfully healing. Just from "listening" to your wisdom on this site, I know you've got it goin' on!! I would never have thought you to be a "little old lady". That person must think I'm old too - I'm only 53 - OK, add another 9 months. Glad I can still boogie with the best of them to those 60s and 70s sounds - some even older than that. Don't want to go back to that age - too confusing then, but boy I'm glad the radio stations still play that stuff! Get out there and struuuuut your stuff - keep feeling that wonderful YOU - Show um what you can do!!

Funny story - my Mom passed away at the age of 72 from the effects of breat cancer - survived 10 years between each episode and then lastly, bone and liver 10 years later. The funniest thing, she was a nurse practitioner, in college health and occupatonal health. Her last job was at the National Gallery of Art in downtown DC. Of course she ran into a lot of the staff looking for ways to go home for the day - don't get me wrong, there were great employees there. But it was like being at a camp full of teanagers sometimes - especially with the guards. They all loved her, and a few I think, even "in love", even the young 20-somethings. When she was on chemo, no one even knew; not even her supervisor. But the funny part was when people read her obituary, they, especially the guards who were closest to her, thought she was only in her mid forties, at the oldest. My sister and I got a kick out of that one!! We knew that the cancer treatments had laid heavy on her looks, but she still looked amazingly young - at almost 73!!

Anyway, take care all. I still owe and owe, so off to work I go in the AM. Gotta get ready.

ahhh, but I am 60 as of this last July.... The story that I posted was not to, of or about me. It was something that my sister sent to me.
