Best type of caulking to use on wood threshold

I've just about given up on trying to get my front entryway wooden threshold replaced. It's not really a big-dollar job, so the local contractors do not seem overly interested. (I guess if I put myself in their shoes, I can't realy blame them for the lack of interest) There are a few spots outside that are starting to split and look like they could break off eventually. With the recent hard rains we've had here in New England, I've noticed water leaking from underneath onto the rug in my front hallway. I'm wondering if applying a bead of silicone caulk where the subfloor meets the threshold would help. I'm not confident in my own 'handyman' abilities to be able to replace the threshold (without causing more work), so until I can get someone willing to do the job, I'm looking for an intermediate solution. Any advice on doing this, what type of caulk to use, etc? Thanks in advance.
