Drywall Repair Advise needed (PICS)

I am fixing a hole in the wall.

It's about 2ft by 2 ft of 3/8" drywall.

The hard part is where the drywall has to be tucked in behind the trim strip.

The drywall can tuck in about 1/2" or less.

I didn't manage to get it in there without smashing the drywall.

I'd prefer not to remove the trim strip.

How do you stuff the drywall behind the trim strip?

Should I use drywall compound near the trim strip?

Thanks for the help.
