Will these vinyl windows be too close to the range?

We had planned to get vinyl windows in our kitchen. My husband isnt keen on painting the exterior windows. But someone over in the window forum said that vinyl (PVC) starts breaking down at 280 degrees F, and that vinyl could be damaged from hot grease.

We will have a 36" Bluestar range between these 2 windows. The current plan was to have to windows come down to about 2.5" from the countertop. They will be 8" from the range on either side. Is this too close to the range to consider using vinyl? Do I need to go with wood windows instead? Or is 8" away enough?

6" is much too close for PVC. The paint on wood would probably be damaged as well. I'd want 12" of distance between the burner and any vertical surface that wasn't scorch resistant. Maybe powder coated metal windows could be closer, but I'm not aware of any of those that meet energy guidelines.

Its actually going to be 8", not 6. I forgot to include the space for the 2.25" trim on the sides of the windows.

My GE Cafe Dual Fuel is installed on top of ceramic tile. I recommend you contacting the plywood manufacturer about the plywood specification since there are many types of plywood, both interior and exterior applications or contact GE service. I believe roofing plywood can withstand a lot of heat captured from the backing sun being absorbed by the shingles, but maybe not as high as 180 degrees. In addition, if you add a 1/4" layer underneath, you stove height relative to your countertop will increase. Will this be a problem from an appearance point of view? Don't forget you will need to install the anti-tip bracket which is located towards one of the rear stove legs. On a side note, I noticed my stove's lower oven being so low to the ground has picked up some dust on top of the lower oven heating element. Now I need to make sure I vacuum this lower area on some periodic basis.

HDR (short for high dynamic range) is a way of combining different exposures of the same scene so that you get a wider range of dark to light areas where you can see the details. You know how if you're inside and you take a photo of the view out your window, the room itself is so dark that you can't see the details, whereas if you expose to see the room properly, the window is overexposed? With HDR you'd take the two photos and merge them into one, with the properly exposed room and the properly exposed view. The problem is that you have to know how to use the software to do that, and maybe you've noticed in RE photos recently how so many of them look almost like sketches or even a bit wrinkly? That comes from pushing the settings in your HDR program or plug-in too hard. Here's an example. Notice how it's all slightly unreal, and if you try to look at the detail it makes you think maybe there's something wrong with your eyes: Lots of lens distortion, too. Look at the clock.

Here's my idea: Analysis: It has the following features: The top and bottom counters are all 3" deeper than standard - as are the base and upper cabinets. This provides more workspace and storage. -- Counters are 28.5" deep -- Base cabinets are 27" deep -- Upper cabinets are 15" deep There is a Snack Center that contains a MW drawer. If you prefer, the MW could be hung from the upper cabinets. It could also contain a toaster or toaster oven - if you use them frequently. It could also contain a Tea/Coffee Center if you drink either of them frequently. There is a Baking Center that's near the ovens but not too far from a water source. There is a 9" wide tall utility pullout for a broom, etc. There is a 24" wide x 12" deep Message/Command Center near the door that leads to the Garage. It provides a place for keys, mail, family calendar, purse, etc. By providing a place for items such as these that are usually only needed coming into/going out of the home at the point of entry/exit, clutter in the Kitchen and the rest of the house is reduced. (It also cuts down on lost keys!) If you have a landline with an answering machine, it's the perfect location b/c you can see if you have messages as soon as you get home while keeping the phone close to the Kitchen. The peninsula seats 3 people. . Other notes: The primary work zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) are separated so multiple people can be working in the Kitchen at the same time - prepping and/or cooking and/or cleaning up. See the Zone Map at the end of this post. The refrigerator, Snack Center, and MW are are on the periphery - this makes it easily accessed by snackers without getting in the way of those working in the Kitchen. The refrigerator and MW are still close to the Prep Zone and not far from the Cooking Zone for ease of access by those prepping and/or cooking. Speaking of the refrigerator, it's a standard-depth refrigerator, not counter-depth. With two teens, I doubt a counter-depth would be big enough. -- The deeper counters in the Snack Center help it look counter-depth -- Building in the refrigerator makes it look built-in. (The refrigerator is flanked by finished end panels and a full-depth (24"D) upper cabinet is mounted above the refrigerator and b/w the two end panels.) There is a corner prep sink on the peninsula. This arrangement lessens the possibility of splashing someone sitting at the peninsula, maximizes prep space on the peninsula, and utilizes the corner. -- I have a similar setup and I store my cutting boards under the prep sink lengthwise so they extend back into the depths of the corner sink cabinet - but the front ends of the boards are easily reached from the front of the cabinet. It's a great way to utilize difficult to access space. There are four potential Prep Zones. The primary and secondary are next to water. The tertiary are not next to water, but they aren't too far. -- Primary Prep Zone - peninsula with over 42" of workspace and next to the prep sink -- Secondary Prep Zone - next to the cleanup with 54" of workspace -- Tertiary Prep Zones - one is next to the cooktop with 66" of deep workspace (also the Baking Center); the other is in the Snack Center with 48" of deep workspace It protects the Cooking and primary Prep Zones from traffic through the Kitchen - the Cooking Zone is the zone that should be the most protected. It should not be in the middle of the traffic thoroughfare as it is in most of your plans. The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep & Cooking Zones so someone cleaning up or loading/unloading the DW will not get in the way of others prepping & cooking. There is plenty of dish storage in this zone for ease of unloading the DW. Dish storage is also near the doorway to the new DR location. This makes it easier for someone setting the table. Since dish storage is also separated from the Prep & Cooking Zones, someone setting the table will not get in the way of others prepping & cooking. . . Zone Map: .

Yeah, swap the fridge and pantry. Better work flow. As said, we take food out of the fridge and bring it to the sink to rinse and clean it. Then we prep between sink and cooktop and the bring the food to the cooktop to cook it. With the fridge where you have it now, you're crossing the cooking zone to the sink. It's much easier when everything is in a "row" so you practically don't have to carry it.

I find it interesting that this could be a problem. It's a trend to have a range between windows like that now. You'd think we'd have heard of it being against code, or any actual problems, by now.

I have a similar situation and have not had any problems - but then, my vinyl window is only on one side, and my rangetop is 48" so I haven't ever actually used that burner.

Thanks tracie.erin. I will be getting a 36" bluestar in a regular configuration and I've looked and the rear left burner is a simmer burner and the rear right burner is 15,000 BTUs.

It would be very very very seldom that I would have all burners going at the same time. Think like 1x a year if that. plus the back of the range has a small island backsplash that I think makes it sit an inch or 2 from the wall.

And, like you've said I've seen plenty of pictures with windows on the sides of a professional range. So it cant be that bad. And alot of pictures have the windows right next to the range, and my windows will be 8" away.

Vinyl (PVC) windows won't last nearly as long as other materials, so you have to reckon with constant replacement and filling up the landfills -- just out of curiosity's sake, is there a reason you don't want real wooden windows?

circuspeanut - My husband didnt want to be bothered with painting the exteriors constantly. We live in northern New England. Also we've had 20 year old wooden windows rotting and had to replace them.

I would look at the install specs for the range. It should tell you what you need to know.

Interresting. I never considered this issue with my vinyl windows flanking my rangetop.

The exposed vinyl on my windows are 9.5" from the side of my CC rangetop, which has 23,000 btus on each burner. The exposed vinyl is 6.5" from the counter.

Have you taken into account the depth at which those windows will be installed? My 1971 house had old 4" thick exterior walls so mine are set back 2.5" from the interior drywall. If your house is newer with 6" thick exterior walls, your windows will be set back 4.5" or so from the drywall. Te depth will increase if you add a tile or stone backsplash. I think this measurement matters when looking at this issue. It's not as if the vinyl will be sitting flush with the drywall waiting to catch fire.

I choose vinyl windows for two reasons. Although I would have greatly preferred something better looking, I knew my DH, the world's best procrastinator, would not keep up the regular maintenance on wood windows in our rainy climate. He neglects lots of ther regular house maintenance. The major issue is that my entire house already had existing vinyl windows. Putting in new wood windows didn't make sense for us.

Side note, I mentioned this on another thread. Have you planned where your required outlets will be installed given the flanking windows?

Sort of OT but a sweet alternative to vinyl is the line of fiberglass windows called Marvin Integrity. I am so glad someone recommended those to us when we were window shopping. They have a much better temperature tolerance compared to vinyl, are a breeze to keep clean, and they operate beautifully. We are so impressed!

Just 2 cents... :)

I'd recommend fiberglass instead of vinyl. And yes, you need to consider where your outlets will go.

Breezygirl - Thanks. My house does have 6" exterior walls so I guess I dont think the vinyl will be an issue.

I havent thought about the electrical outlets. I guess I should. We dont have much around here for "codes" - for example there are no makeup air requirements. But a friend of mine has a husband in the same town who is an electrician, so I will ask him.

I've tried looking up electrical code requirements on my town's website but am not finding anything. Are these things usually controlled by the town? I suppose I could put them on either side of the range before the window starts, right? Or would there be a rule about not having them so close to a heat source?
