Thank you one and all. I certainly wouldn't do a pieced backing if it wasn't necessary. It started out much wider and longer and I didn't realize how much the quilting took up and don't know if it was the stitch I used or the operator. The colors are his favorite colors, so I just went with them. Plan to deliver it today. Sue, The quilting stitch I used is a wavy line that's one of the stitches on my machine....called Serpentine Stitch. Lois, I played with the stitch width and length to get what worked for me. Ended up with 3 and 6. Also, I found that thickness makes a difference, too. I don't have an adjustable pressure foot on the machine I was using but my other machine doesn't have this stitch.....what to do, what to do. lol LindaB, I was concerned about the back not being on straight so was really really careful to try and get it straight, plus there was a lot of pinning going on! I actually pinned a seam on the backing I wanted to follow, then when I sandwiched it, I followed that line on the front to make sure it was as straight as I could get it. My sandwiching board isn't as big as the quilt and the floor is not an option, so it took a little bit of time. All in all, I'm please with how it turned out, won't make another pieced backing unless I have to but will do the flange binding again....even the corners turned (pun intended) out well. :-) SharonG/FL

That is so sad. My first machine was a Kenmore, 1974, still have it! Dad worked at Sears, so got it on sale and employee discount - my birthday and confirmation gift that year. Dad brought me to his store and the woman in the sewing dept showed me all the neat things I could do with my machine. I loved using it, a real workhorse, all metal. Still use it along with my Bernina 830E. Sears used to sell fabric too.

I have one of these machines: Model 1400; I wouldn never get rid of it. Got it as a gift in 1972, and I have made tons of things using this gem of a machine and attachments. I have a problem now, though. The zig-zag just stopped working. I cleaned the machine and will oil it next. There are no clunks or weird sounds or reactions -- the straight stitch works fine. But when I switch it to zig-zag (or any other settings on that control knob), it just does straight stitch. In a mending project, it worked fine for one item; then just stopped when I tried to do another item. If I move it to adjust the width of the zag, it still just does a straight stitch wherever I move it. Also, another problem that suddenly appeared: loosening the clutch on the wheel does not stop the needle mechanism from going up and down when I want to wind the bobbin. I haven't had it serviced in several years--I rarely use it now--mostly for mending and occasional projects.Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

This is a really neat presser foot. I'm thinking of ordering one for myself as it replaces several I have with my machine. BUT, in the list of things it does below, 1/4" narrow seams is listed. I would think that if this is true a broken needle would not be necessary. Again, I'm probably missing something here. Are you wanting to sew the seam on the opposite side from the way it would normally be sewn with this foot?
