I'm getting an indusrial sewing machine!!!!!!!!!11

I can't believe it, but I am getting an industrial sewing machine! Am I crazy! I have to move things in my basement to make room and find 4 people to help lift it, but I am so excited! The woman I am getting it from told me it used to be her mothers. That she used for her business. She said it will sew leather, etc. And she is giving me another older machine that is in a cabinet! I have to wait a week or so, but I am just so excited and wanted to tell you all! I have read posts here about the older HD machines but never thought I would own one!

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Once you have an "industrial" machine you will NEVER consider a home machine again. My first day behind a commercial machine and I knew I would NEVER again be satisfied with anything less. Congratulations!

You have to give the maker and the model number before anyone will be able to comment on the machine you have. Commercial ("industrial") machinery comes is SO MANY different makes and models it is impossible to offer anything substanitive without more information.

Thanks, I will let you know when I found out all the details. The family had a death in the family and I don't want to bother them with this right now. In about a week or so I should be able to find out. Your "NEVER" comment has me even more excited, Chelone!

I truly appreciate everyone's input. This will be a learning experience for me. OilPainter - Thank you for figuring the yardage; that was kind. I've been sketching it out, but I was waiting for the book to arrive before getting serious about planning the details. I've sewn all my life but lately I mostly make quilts. I have a Bernina sewing machine and an old, (early '50s) heavy-duty Pfaff sewing machine. It was supposedly used for boat and car upholstery; it was from FreeCycle! I also have a new Pfaff serger so I should be ready, tool wise. I've never made pleated drapes, but I have made lined and weighted, heavy cotton, rod-pocket curtains. I used the same set in three different base houses in three different states. They finally faded to the point of no return. I also made three pairs of lined silky curtains for a friend. They were a pain in the pins! LOL The decorative "silk" slid around on the "silk" lining. It felt as if I were trying to sew soap bubbles together. I finished them, and they hang nicely, but "nevermore" on the silky stuff. One lady suggested making a practice drape header with the pleats, lining, stiffener, etc., but keeping it very short to ensure I have the width and spacing correct before starting on the real fabric. If I decide to try the pleats, I'll go with the practice run first. CLT3 - I went to Fargo yesterday to shop at the Mill Ends outlet and the large JoAnn's. The outlet had "Thermal Suede" drapery lining for $6 a yard. Do you know the brand name of a good, mid-range, lining? JoAnn's had some lovely drapery material, but nothing that really inspired me. These are not investment drapes. They will be a "fun" project to bring some insulation and color to the bedroom. I'm looking forward to learning a new "skill," the pleating process, but if it becomes a stress, I'll just make plain panels and hang them from clips. I live in an isolated area of northern North Dakota. I don't work outside the home and I don't have children. Self-sufficient Hubby and the two hunting dogs don't mind me hiding in the sewing room for hours and days on end. If I stay too long, he brews a pot of tea and joins me in there! I don't mind spending the time to make them, but I won't spend $1,000. to hang something on the window. That would make my Scottish blood boil! LOL Please, keep the ideas coming. I've lurked here for so long; it's a great site to learn new techniques.

I'm familiar with the Husqvarna Viking line which should be accommodate much of your wishes. The latest issue of the HV Epic or its sister Pfaff machine (don't know the model name) both have larger throats, but they won't be taller. They're large and aren't the kind you put away each time you use it. Also,be prepared for sticker shock. Best idea is to visit local major sewing machine brand dealers to test drive machines and sometimes they have good promotions or decent prices on 2nd hand machines. I would stay out of Walmart if you want a sturdy, dependable machine.

Your stripes look very nice at the top - you made a big improvement. I've made all my own drapes (except for the vintage ones I've collected) as well as drapes for others, and today it is even easier since you can use clip-on rings, which is what I have done with my most recent ones. I painted diagonal stripes for drapes that I made for my mother's bedroom, and this way I would make the drapes make a "V" pattern by painting the stripes in a mirror image. I get lots of free fabric at work, and so the closet in my sewing room/guest room is pretty much filled with bolts of fabric waiting for me to make something with them. I've used both fabric paint and acrylic paint for painting fabric - the fabric paint is pretty expensive, and the acrylic paint only needs to have fabric paint medium added to it. I have on occasion just used water, but that was when I wanted to create a certain effect with brush strokes. Did you thin your latex paint? Do you also set it with an iron and press cloth? The paint will fuse with the fabric when it is ironed, but if it is too thick, it could crack. However, you can keep extra paint for a touch-up, if necessary. If you set the paint with an iron, it will not come off in the wash, but I would still be hesitant to wash lined drapes, even though (like you) I preshrink cotton and linen fabric, unless it is going to be used for upholstery.

Remember the 'NEVER' comment -- it is true, you'll get so attached to the machine that you won't want to sew on anything else.

Just so you know, a commercial and industrial are different. A commercial is actually a semi-industrial, somewhere between a home and industrial, and not as fast as a true industrial.

The industrials sew soooooooooooooooooooo fast.Once you get used to it ,you will love it.

I am getting more and more excited with every post from you all! Am I biting off more than I can chew though? I am terrified I won't be able do this! I am very much a novice and hope I will be a fast learner once I get this in my home!

Are there any sites anyone can suggest for me to check out? I know I don't have the details of the machine yet, but I am hoping to get that info soon.

I have 6 industrial machines (and the word commercial is used interchangeably in both large companies I patronize) and the only "home machine" I ever use is a Kenmore with a buttonhole capability. And that's only because I haven't been able to find a buttonhole machine (in decent condition) in the used market (I have the button sewing machine, though!).

Yes, the words are used interchangeably, but it doesn't change the fact that they aren't the same.

Chey, the only way to learn it is to just do it. You'll figure it out quickly. Just watch your fingers near the needle. I don't know of any sites that will give you any info.

Please explain the difference in greater detail, shadylady2u. I'm interested.

In 25+ years in the trade I've never encountered the distinction, maybe it's a regional thing? I've dealt with 2 wholesalers in that time and they make no distinction between "commercial" and "industrial" whatsoever. Neither handle any of the "hybrid" "in between" machines you reference.

Commercial and industrial are the same. All it is just a choice of words used. I have been in the business for over 30 years and if you ask an engineer or technician the difference they would say they are the same.

Enjoy your machine -- take time to learn it and after a bit of practice you will feel comfortable operating it.

From what I've read, a commercial machine is largely based on an industrial, but may have some plastic parts, is not as fast, and not recommended for use 8 hours a day, so it's actually somewhere between a home and industrial. A Singer 20U is considered a commercial machine, not an industrial. I read this somewhere a couple years ago, and can no longer find where, so don't have any link to direct you to this. Just threw out the comment, when I read your post, not a big deal, so take it or leave it.

I have an Industrial Brother,s7200A....beautiful machine, no plastic parts, designed to run 16 hours a day or more. It was expensive, but well worth it. It is extremely fast, cuts my threads, the presser foot is activated by the foot pedal, etc. You are going to absolutely love your machine! Don't be afraid of it....conquer it!
