Bedtime memories

In the Good Old Days, when I shared my bed with my partner (or he shared his bed with me!), we decided early on that there was His Side and My Side of the bed, on a 50/50 basis. Which was all very well in theory. In practice, I got a tiny sliver right at one edge, with barely enough room to lie on my side, clinging for dear life to the edge of the mattress. While His Lordship took up the other 9/10ths of the space, spread-eagled luxuriously. From time to time I'd have an arm crashing into my face, or a knee in the kidneys, but I learned to hang on just the same, as precarious a hold as it was.

Occasionally, the system failed. If he decided to roll onto his side, he'd snuggle up to me, which was very nice, except that the slightest pressure from his body weight would send me, literally, over the edge, and onto the floor. Most times I could just pick myself up and push and shove him towards the centre of the bed, growling 'Move over, you big oaf!' and he'd sleepily comply. Other times, I'd have to walk around to His Side and lie down there. It was seldom a successful manoevre, however. When his flailing arm crashed onto my face, the fact that it was 'the wrong arm' would be enough to rouse him, and he'd demand that I 'get over to your own side, woman!'. And the whole cycle would start again.

Now that he's gone, I have the whole bed to myself. Yet I still cling to My Side, and I've noticed that His Side is getting more and more vast as my loneliness increases.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'd give a lot to be pushed out of bed again!

Oh Daisy, I love your posts!! My dear, you're more than welcome to come spend a few nights at our house. I have a "snuggler" and spent too many years alone so I'm having some adjustment problems. We've already graduated from a queen size bed to a king and it has helped a great deal, but he still manages to find his way over to my side occasionally. Keep in mind, I have nothing against snuggling, but there's a time to snuggle and a time to sleep and they shouldn't run concurrently (at least in my opinion)!! And, it doesn't help matters any that he's cold blooded and I'm kicking the covers off most nights. I've threatened to run barbed wire down the center of the bed, but he informed me that he has wire cutters, so I guess that would only slow him down a bit. Sorry for ranting, but your post gave me quite a chuckle!!

I can relate to the empty side of the bed, Daisy....It's been empty for a few years and I still don't tread on that side...funny how it can be engrained over the years.
Janet, you should appreciate the snuggling a little more and think about what it's like if no one were there....that and post more comments... you have good ones also

16 was easy because they all came into their own right at some point. John Lennon (for his legacy and death), Paul McCartney (and Wings), George Harrison (While My Guitar Gently Weeps and other hits right up until the mid 1980s), and Ringo Starr who we all know starred in the Caveman movie (with Dennis Quaid! I've only 'known' my grandmothers after doing some genealogy and general sleuthing -- although I remember both women quite well. I thought both my grandmothers were very stern, hard women, but I didn't know the why of it. My maternal grandmother lived with my mother and me from the time my parents divorced. She lived into her 90's. She was Scots-Irish and came to NYC with her widowed mother, elder sister and brother when she was in her teens. "Poor" doesn't begin to say it! Her mother and brother died of TB when my mother was a small child. Her beloved husband (the only good man to ever live, according to her) had a stroke in his late 50's and lingered bedridden until dying. She disapproved of my mother's choice of husband; he proved her judgement to be correct. My paternal grandmother's father was a doctor in silver mining towns in Colorado. Three of her sibs died before they were three. Her two brothers died in accidents; one in his teens and one in his twenties. Her parents begged her to refuse the nice farmer in their native Pennsylvania and marry the guy in Colorado -- to keep her near them. Big Mistake. She bore seven children to this blowhard; one son died at seven. They were constantly on the move -- ahead of the landlord. Her father was crippled when his horse and buggy went off a mountain during a night housecall. During the Depression her husband deserted the family. She managed by renting a large home in a college town and taking in boarders, having sent the two eldest boys to live with a relative. Big Mistake #2: she took the man back. He led her a merry chase. She died in her 60's. He lived to be 100. No surprise these women seemed "stern" to me.

I think there are certain things that for some reason are just easier to remember. Every one I know is having the same problem: we remember faces, but not names. That follows the concept of a picture is worth a thousand words, i.e. a Face is a picture; a Name can be a word or a number of words. I think that is considered pretty normal. I know I often am told something that doesn't seem very interesting, but then I forget who it was or why it was told to me. And if I am telling someone something, I tend to chase rabbits and sometimes forget what it was I was going to tell. Memory is a strange thing. Just this past TDay, my son was home and he and his DGS were shooting pool at his DD's. I mentioned to my DS something about the pool table he had when he was a teen ager. He didn't even remember ever having one. I remember every detail of the purchase and the arrangements to have it delivered and set up in the basement on Christmas Eve. Oh, wait. The year that the Cabbage doll craze was going on. People standing in line fighting for the darn things. DD was going to be the only kid on the block without one. I don't do lines. I planned to get her and DS one after Xmas when the stupidity was over. Well DH was driving home from work on Xmas eve and heard that a mattress company was having a drawing for a CP Doll so he stopped and filled out a raffle ticket. Of course he won. Now we had a dilemma. One doll and two kids. DD came in to ask what was going on. Then her eyes got wide. A Cabbage Patch Doll! Was DS getting one too? We explained that we only had the one. Without missing a beat she said we should give it to her brother. "I have lots of friends since this neighborhood is all girls. Keith doesn't have a friend of his own. This is a boy doll and he can be his friend", she said. So we wrapped him up and wrote from Santa a note explaining that Santa had found Bo Jacee at the bottom of his sleigh just as he thought he was done for the night. He saw on his list that a boy named Keith lived on ------ and didn't have any friends of his own on the block. Bo Jacee needed a friend too so Santa decided it was a perfect match. That was the Xmas I saw what my DD was made of and I knew my "off the wall" parenting style was absolutely right. DD went on to have a huge collection of Cabbage Patch Kids that following year. It's funny I have been thinking along the lines of the empty side of the bed lately. Yesterday there was a report on tv about how one persons sleep habits cause their partner to loose sleep. I guess getting too much sleep gives you time to think ;0) I had a water bed and a snorer. The snoring really didn't bother me even though I really like it very quiet when I sleep. This morning I was thinking that I have finally gotten the bed to myself since younger son has finally gotten too big to sneak in with me in the middle of the night. A few minutes later my very large german shepherd who has never wanted on my small bed got up in the bed and promptly took up almost the whole bed! She isn't a snuggler and guess which end she pointed in my direction! I decided it was time to get up. Daisy thanks for the post I guess we all have the same thoughts sometimes.

It never fails. It is always the tail end of the dog that they put in you face. I wonder why?

LOL and a belated welcome to the board ivamae....with me it's the tail end of a cat that I didn't want in the first place....I am an animal lover but she is trying to sway me, I think
