In tears...Paint runs everywhere, how can I fix it???

posted in paint too, but need responses asap

I have this super, overprces Aura paint, I am attempting to trim in it looks horrid. I think I have too much paint on my brush I have runs everywhere. It looks AWFUL. How can I fix it? It's not 100% dry yet.

UGH, summie, I'm so sorry to hear this. I have no tips but I'll be very curious to hear what folks post, because I have a front door to do in Aura pretty soon. The sample Aura I used on the house was fabulous to work with--maybe it is that you are putting too much on the brush? Can you wipe off what you've done somehow and start all over? It dries fast, as I recall...

It seems really thick and goopy and I think you have to be a very seasoned painter and work quickly IMO. I just scraped the drips off and I am going to allow it to dry, go get lunch and sand it eben though there is this warning about sanding and cancer on the side. Nice. I am usually a decent painter and just cut in my FR with no issues at all same brush etc, but SW duration paint. I am not blaming the paint maybe just my upset that my line was not coming over so clean and I think I had a bit too much paint on the brush. I also JUST founf out DH used my super favorite brush that I use to cut in last night to paint and trim in the ceiling and he abuses the brush. SO Ia m going to go get another and attempt to fix this.

Depending how long those chickens were in the coop, the poop and the rainfall may have thrown off the soil pH and the soil nutrients for quite a way into the soil. Before you put a lot of effort into it, why don't you have a soil test done on the soil there? It may be massively unbalanced to the point you will be wasting your time without making some corrections. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Office (see below) and ask them who does soil tests local to you. Mostly, the basics should cost you about $10 per test. Personally, I would have two tests done. Wash off a shovel blade that doesn't have rust on it (rust will throw off the results), and shove it straight down (or close) into the soil and lever up the shovelful of soil, toss it aside. Then carefully back up an inch or a little more, and push the blade down again so you're getting a slice of soil. Carefully lay this slice on an open newspaper, keeping it together as much as possible (like a cake slice). Sample 1: You're going to want about one-plus cup of soil, so use a clean, non-rusty trowel to 'sub-divide' the slice. You want from the very top of the surface (chick poop and all) down about 6" and wide enough to give you a cup or a little more. Collect this and put it into a flattish clean container. Sample 2: You want this one to be mainly all soil, without the chicken poop 'icing'. If you can get it from the slice of soil that you got the first sample from, fine; otherwise, take a new slice from the same hole. Try to determine where the line is between the actual soil and the layer of poop, then discard all the chicken poop, and measure 6" down and collect your cup+ or so of soil. Put it in a separate clean container. Mark them: soil with chicken poop, soil under chicken poop. Break up each sample as much as you can. Pick out all plant material, roots, rocks, pebbles, sticks, and debris. Try not to handle it with your bare hands. Place in a safe place in the sun (no wind) and stir them occasionally until they are dry. Bag each sample in a LABELED ziplock plastic bag. Deliver to the soil testing place. If you garden organically, be sure to write ORGANIC on your paperwork and on the bags, as that will alter the recommendations they make. It would probably be a good idea to tell them what you are trying to do, because I have the feeling that your results are going to WAAAAY off the usual. I wouldn't do anything until you get the results back. If you have further questions on the recommendations, call them and ask. They're here to help, and your tax dollars are paying their wages. I don't really see how you can oversand the wood. Just sand enough until it is smooth and then caulk it, only filling the gap and wiping away the excess caulk with a damp cloth. You could use some wood filler or something, but all fillers are brittle and will eventually crack/fall out, which is why caulk is usually a better option. Sometimes the carpenter doesn't care much where the seam falls so there is no stud behind the seam, which is why the crack in the seam reappears.

I'm in Hopkinsville, in southwestern KY, about 1 1/2 hours from Nashville (we're northwest of it). We're 6B. Crepe myrtles are fairly common around here, but at least small to medium-sized ones an get killed back to the ground if we get an extreme cold snap. For example, we get down to the teens for lows occasionally, once in awhile might hit zero, but a couple of years back we had one night with an anticipated low of -9 to -11 degrees. That killed a young peach tree I'd planted the prior spring, and (I think that's what did this) busted the trunk of a beautiful young Bloodgood Japanese maple I had at a place I work (it put back from the roots; I let the suckers grow one year, then this spring picked one & cut the rest). My point is, if I'm 6B and you're aways south of me, you may be '7A' or what have you, but even up here, we have crepe myrtles. I've got a pink velour in the backyard at home - which got killed to the ground & put back out from that same winter. This year, not so bad, wasn't killed to the ground. Richard.

My job is not quite DIY (but not quite a pro painter) since I am a handyman by trade (for the last 16 years) and do similar projects and do recommend much higher end materials, but my brother is on a budget since he is just trying to get the house sold and he lost his job roughly 8 or 9 months ago and has not been able to find a job since the holidays or COVID. Times have been tough and he is incapable of getting results like this on his own. I usually rent all my equipment and he does not even have the budget for that so I finally decided to purchase my own airless for his project. Everything was done the exact way a pro painter would have done it on the exception of the materials and not having layed the cabinet doors flat while spraying to allow the paint to self level. We used the cup hook and coat hanger method to save time even though you run the risk of having the paint run or not have proper coverage if you don't run the sprayer at the correct speed. Thank you wiscokid and eam44 for your input on the matter. Live_wire_oak, at some point everyone was not a professional and did not know how to paint, even you; you have to start somewhere and should be educating people without making them feel bad about their decisions. I did not expect a high end professional job, but neither did I expect a DIY result either.

Might the warning about cancer relate to sanding *preexisting* paint? As in it might contain lead?

A new brush will definitely help, and teach DH to stop abusing your brushes!

I know that --was it funcolors?-- said that you have to *not* touch Aura once you've applied it, that it's not a fussable paint. If that helps at all.

I used Aura paint for a room in my house without any trouble. It wasn't trim -- just walls -- but I found it very easy to use, with great coverage.

Sorry, I have no advice about the Aura paint, but I will say that I my brushes where my husband can't find them.

Along with the brush, purchase a quart of XIM Extender and use according to label. That will give you more open time.

Two thin coats works best. Apply with a Chinex brush, about 6" spread from dry to wet edge.

Ok, I have calmed down andit is finished. I sraped and anding the wall and it looks decent in that area. It's high up, so not noticable, plus a drapery rod is right there too. FC is right, once it's up do not mess with it. It's a BEAUTIFUL color, I mean the color os SO pretty and it has a great depth and we love it. I just need to get better at this painting thing and better at trimmingin and the baseboards and just all of it in general.

Oh summiebee, I posted a response here but must have not hit submit. Too late now, but whenever I do vertical trim or doors, I have one of those little foam rollers. I brush first and then go over with the foam roller with just barely any paint on the foam roller. It just catches those little drips and evens out the paint. Maybe for the next project.
