Dear Penny, Thank you for responding to my question. I am so sorry to hear about your brother and son. My heart goes out to you. I don't think your morbid. You have to do what makes you feel is right and I'm sure that this will be a most heart wrenching project but you will get inner peace doing it. My brother went out one night and just disappeared. His body was found 2 weeks later, we don't know what happened to him. I have a lot of newspaper clippings, missing poster etc. I plan to include these items. Scrapbook Obssesions has a lot of poetry but I haven't decided on anything yet. I will let you know what I do. Marg. P.S. I'm Kayleens mom.

Dear Marg,
Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I have been really busy lately. Thank you for your comforting words concerning the recent deaths in my family. I cannot imagine how you felt also. I know of a girl here in our town where her brother came up missing also and his body was never recovered, and it is a constant torment for his mother. Life is so short and unexpected. Love Penny

Hi Penny, I also know someone who's sister disappeared and was never found. It must be so terrible for the families. Besides my love for crafts, cooking, etc. I also belong to a Search and Rescue group. We are certified by the O.P.P. and I love it but I became involved with search and rescue only after my brother disappeared and there was no such group in our area. Actually I am one of the founders of the group. Anyways, back to scrapbooking. I have a question for you. I bought a album to put my pix in and the wrapper says acid free however the pages have protective covers like the old magnetic ones. After seeing the damage done by the old books I am scared to use them. Are they really acid free and safe to use? Thanks a lot, Penny and have a GREAT day, Marg

welcome to this site. Where in Iowa are you? I am in New Hampton-just north of Waterloo. I have made several penny bb. First I fill my finger holes with grout and smooth it so there are no high places. Wash the ball to get off all the oils. Then scruff up the ball with sand paper to insure good adhesion. Then just start with the pennies. I use Liquid Nails in a copper color. After I randomly add the pennies (heads up) so that they are touching each other, I let it dry completely (couple of days) and then I like to grout mine (sanded grout only) using copper colored grout (terra cotta). I feel it gives a more finished look to the ball and the grout will help hold your pennies on especially with Iowa weather. Of course, do not leave them outside in the winter. When the grout dries, I like to seal my bb with a masonary sealer once a year. I did my own penny ball several years ago and it still looks good! Always getting lots of compliments. Becky center>

Thanks for the replies, Penny and Al. I followed up on the weblink and called my local Vector Control Dept. It took a day to hear from someone there. Even though their website mentions yellowjackets, the guy left a message on my machine saying that I should probably hire a professional to take care of them (unless I'm prepared to suit up like a beekeeper--which I'm not). I suppose that is the safest thing, so I'll probably call a pest control company that offers environmentally sensitive solutions. It's surprising (pleasantly so) that if these are indeed yellowjackets (rather than other wasps or bees), they haven't stung me yet, even on the occasions when they've gone up a sleeve or gotten in my hair. Does anyone know if the colony would die out in the fall in the San Jose area, given our mild winters?

I definately would not want a child of mine to be made to wear a tail and be embarrissed in school or to have a dangerous barbed wire tail hanging in the schoolroom. To me it just sounds like she wants the kids to "tattle", hopefully, privately to an inanimate object instead of a person in authority. And again, there could be a fine line between hearing something important vs. not. The small frame of the tab, composed of a roll of aluminum, has to stay rigid as it pushes in the scored panel on the lid. It is also the little tab between the rolled tab and the lid that needs to stay intact until the scored panel is pushed in, and which breaks when the tab is removed. Sometimes it takes a dozen wiggles, sometime only a couple will suffice. As I mentioned in my post of Sept. 1, I collected 2,000 tabs in a 2-litre ice cream package, filling it about 3/4 full and I didn't weigh it, but it was not much over 2 lbs., 3 lbs. at the outside. It takes about 32 cans to make a pound - with or without the tabs. If you have a scrap metal dealer nearby, they will buy your scrap cans, and some prefer them uncrushed, but others don't care. Around here, they paid about 70 cents per lb., a few months ago. They say that the tabs and the cans all go into the same bucket. Crushed cans occupy about 1/3 - 1/4 the volume of intact cans. Dear Marg,
They may indeed be acid free, but I think the problem here is the glue that holds the photos in place. It is almost like the glue on post it notes and that is sort of how it works, however over time the glue becomes too tacky and that is what makes your photos tear when trying to remove them later. If the pages are removeable (like in a 3 ring binder) and you love the cover, then just replace the pages, however if it is of a sprial type and they are not removeable I would take it back to where I got it and explain the tacky problem and ask for at least an exchange. Dear Penny. Thanks for the info. I think I will return the albums, besides the tackiness, when I put the pics in other protectors they extend about 1/2 inch out of the binder. Not a good thing. I am very new to scrapbooking and am just discovering all the little problems you run into doing this however I went to Wallmart last night and bought all sorts of items on sale. I am starting to love this. I can't wait until the end of the month when the only stamping store in my area is having a scrapbook workshop. This is none of my business but how old are you. I am a VERY young 52 years old. I hope you have a great day. Marg.
