Getting Started and Cost

I keep thinking that this would be such a great hobby--but I am such a cheapskate that I never seem to be able to bring myself to buy anything. (I also tend to start projects and then drop them)

What would be an easy way to start without buying a lot of tools until I know this hobby fits me? Also if people are willing to post this--about how much $ and time do you spend on scrapping each month?

I think there are a few key ingredients and I also started out cheap. I use card stock from Wal-Mart(can get a multi-pak for $2.50). a glue stick .88 cents, a black marker type pen(has two different points), an inexpensive binder(school aisle-$2.50) and page protectors(25 for $3.97). MAKE SURE all of these items except the binder say ACID-FREE. Anything that touches your page be it glue, a sticker, etc. should be acid free. You also need a regular pair of scissors and some photos. You will eventually need stickers, die cuts(shapes made of card stock-which is actually like a heavier typing paper). If you want to include newspaper clippings run them off on a photo copy machine. There are some great websites that give examples of peoples pages. I started out simple and depending if you start with new pictures that you take it can be hours or days. A friend of mine only uses the best pictures and doesn't save every one like you do with a photo album. Post a response if you need more advice. Dee

The best way to save money on this craft is to join a group of ladies doing it. Most are happy to share tools and accessories, with each other. This really can make sense when buying paper in bulk packs, like the computer paper at walmart, it is acid free, but who wants 25 sheets of the same style? So you get 10 or 15 ladies together and each one buys a pack, the you split the pack and you have a good assortment for the price of one pack! You can also start small by attending a class given by one of the craft stores, where they usually supply you with all the items needed to make that page, for a set fee, or even free at some places. At your age and level of experience, I'd look for an internship to see what the life was actually like. It's too easy to romanticize about the bucolic life. There's a reason farming is declining as a profession. Nonetheless, we started a farm 8 years ago and aren't looking back. We also didn't quit our day jobs. We bought 22 acres of wilderness 8 years ago and have turned 6 acres of it into a fruit and vegetable farm. Land prices are unreal right now, but tax on farmland is still very cheap. Originally, mine were $12 a year. Now, they're a whopping $20/year. On the land, equipment, pond, trees, berries, roots, etc., we've easily spent over $150,000. All is paid for but with a lot of sacrifice. Fuel is a huge expense. We also need a building, greenhouse, and irrigation system which may run around $70,000. We have taken a loss every year we've been in business. Some day though, there should be some profit. Time is the biggest investment as it takes certain crops years to mature--fruit trees, berries, asparagus, etc. Then there are structures like trellises, deer and other crittter protection, etc. The time I spend on the farm is unreal. I have left the state once since buying it. From April to the middle of Sept, there were 3 days I did not work on the farm. Then there are weather, disease, insects, and predation to deal with. One bad storm can wipe ten years of work away. Good luck staying organic if you live anywhere other than the west coast. Marketing your product is a whole other realm as demand and prices fluctuate and tastes and attitudes change. Still, I don't regret anything I've done and look forward to doing it till I can't do it any longer.

Hi OP, we just tore our house down March 10th. It took them 1.5 days, including cleanup & dump fees, and that cost us $8500Cdn. I don't have pics on photobucket, but if you want to see what's involved just let me know and I'll post a couple. We only tore down to the basement foundation as we had lifted the house in 2003 and tore out the old one, piled, and put in a new one. (Should have just tore out the whole dang thing then...but I digress lol). If you DO decide to tear down, I STRONGLY recommend that you take out the windows yourself. We didn't (couldn't actually cause we were living there right until a couple days before demo) and our yard is COVERED with small pieces of glass that we will now have to pay more for to get cleaned up before re-landscaping. Also, your yard will be filled with small pieces of wood splinters. To clean this up easily, I just used a rake and it worked splendidly. As for your driveway? Alot will depend on how strong it was made to begin with. Our front sidewalk surprisingly survived with very little damage considering all the heavy equipment that was on it, but DH had built that thing like Fort Knox lol. It's too bad we had to tear it out anyways, our new entrance has moved so the sidewalk had to go. Good luck with your decision.

Justgotabme - Ha ha! Sadly I wasn't much better before I had kids. At least not about getting organized and staying that way. But I did have more energy to just stay up an extra half hour and tidy up so it didn't get quite so crazy. The good news is that after I wrote my pity-party posting last night I did get up and pick up the scattered mail, any trash on the floor, DD's books and got the toys back to her zone. Some of the stuff is gone off the couch too, mostly just the trash stuff though. Looking at what I just wrote about not being able to get organized and stay that way... I'm not sure that's true. I don't think I have EVER been organized. I have gotten my house neat and clean, but I think I can't keep it that way precisely because it is not organized. On the other hand, I think my kitchen is fairly organized and everything there that belongs there has a home... but it doesn't stay neat because other things like to camp out on the kitchen counter and table. I don't think most of my house is unorganized because I have too much unloved stuff (though that's certainly true of the garage), we do haul stuff to Goodwill several times a year and there's an ongoing goodwill pile in the garage. But I'm sure if I started digging through my closets I could find more to haul away.

We have 2 phones with Virgin Mobile, each phone cost under $20. I am on an old plan where we pay $20 every 3 months. I mainly have the phone for emergencies/long distance as I detest talking on the phone and we have a land line. I do have an ipod touch for many of the fun things at home but if there is no wifi when I am out and about, I figure I can live without. When my phone needs to be replaced, I will be looking at Trac phones or the like prepaid because it is pointless for me to pay even $20 a month for the limited amount I use it and my current plan is no longer available. However, I do feel that I need a phone as I live in a rural area on poor roads and have a daughter with diabetes so if there is a problem, I want to be contacted. DH's phone we pay $20 a month for. I cannot remember what it includes but he uses his a bit more for work and never uses all of his minutes. I should also add that my 16 yo and 13 yo do not have phones. When the 16 yo starts driving, we may have a prepaid family phone for emergencies or he may be able to borrow mine, not sure yet but it is not a huge necessity in their lives yet. Have a home demo. There are several companies that have home parties, you as the hostess would receive free stuff.

Don't worry about not being able to bring yourself to buy anything. Once you get started, you won't be able to STOP! LOL
