Bt is highly effective against those guys. You may need to do a couple sprays. It takes them awhile to die because they need to eat enough of the Bt on the leaves. Bt is very safe for all non-pillars, probably a lot safer than the organocide. Scott

Not mowing on the vacation would be a good thing. Neglected grass always does well if it's too long, rather than too short. On the fertilizer front, I'd give it a half-application of Milorganite, or other sewage-sludge based fertilizer. It won't burn the lawn, and adds organic material. The Milorganite brand also adds 4% iron, which will darken the green on the lawn. When you get back, you want a dry lawn. If it rained recently, then wait a day. Mow the lawn, at it's highest mower setting, going north-south. A full day later, mow again, on the highest setting, going east-west. There will be some bigger mulch pieces left on the lawn, after the first mowing, that the second mowing will take care of. After that second mowing, water the heck out of it, if it's dry.

I honestly think my worms are happier when neglected. Ther first year of my bin, I didn't know much about the process and sort of forgot them for long periods. They would go 2-3 months without being "fed", then I'd think about them and toss in some veggie scraps. I hadn't gotten over the ick factor yet, and didn't do much to disturb them. When I finally got interested and became more attentive, I noticed they had been thriving without me. I have air holes at the top, but no drain holes and I've never had moisture issues. However, now that I'm feeding more regularly I keep a close eye on things. I still like to take a break every few weeks and stop feeding for a while. Enjoy your vacation, the little ones will be fine. If you're worried about the leachate, maybe you could stack your bin on another of similar size, so you don't return to a mess. Hope this helps.
