Serger thread on old Singer sewing machines

Does anyone know how I can get my older Singer sewing machines to sew using serger thread? I have oodles of serger thread and make quilt tops for chairty.

The local sewing machine shop told me I should be able to use serger thread on my 1952 Singer straight stitch sewing machine and also on the Singer Featherweight machines. However, the machine stitches a few inches and breaks the top thread.

All machines have been recently serviced.

I have used the cone of thread on the sewing machine over a regular spool of thread, have used cone of thread on a stand. I have adjusted stitch length and tension to no avail. Have used various sizes of needles.

Any tips are welcome.
