But if you hide them behind a sconce, the sound quality is seriously impaired. If you don't mind, then hide away. Would the floor speaker be helped by putting it on a stand?

My husband's a serious audiophile and there's just no way to hide these guys. They, as the man says, go up to 11.

I have circa 1952, narrow board, white oak floors, but they had been covered with carpeting for 50 years. They don't have any depth or character; yours are grand!

Pam, is the box on the floor a speaker or a subwoofer? If it's a subwoofer you could easily hide it behind something, but the speakers need to be out in the open for best sound quality.

We have two on the floor and I have them in baskets. One is under a bench so the speaker is not visible at all.
Dh is not an audiophile, thankfully.

Well, this might not help if you don't want to do this but we had our speakers put into the ceiling so all that shows is the cover. The sub woofer and center speaker live in a custom built cabinet we had made that houses all the components. There is mesh fabric on the doors instead of solid wood.

The cabinet just looks like a nice piece of furniture that sits below the TV which is mounted on the wall. It was an expense to do, have the cabinet made and put the speakers in the ceiling, but well worth it to me.

You can hide a subwoofer ... meaning put it behind a piece of furniture, but you can't do that with speakers.

Our Bose subwoofer is behind the TV cabinet -- and tiny tiny white speakers sit on a wood cornice box above the window. ((well this cornice box is wood but covered with fabric))

One of the speakers sits on an end table and is hidden behind something -- and the other one is hidden too.

Yes -- we can still get amazing sound! LOL! :)

The speakers are behind the fabric screen to the L. and R. of the TV. Walls were painted same color as fabric.
Won't work for everybody, but it's an idea.

We have yet to do this, but ours will be installed in false beams in the ceiling. Sub woofer and other components will be in built in cabinet. I've drawn up the plans we just need to find the time.

Sweet of you Caroline--my floors are redwood, laid down in 1903, when my loft building was built as a warehouse in LA. I'm on the top storey, which housed the offices of whatever company it was.

In our "theater" space, which is movie walls and a huge pulldown screen, the speakers are mounted on the ceiling beams, covered with grill cloth, can't even tell they're there.

We've had six foot tall electrostatic speakers (looked like screens), 3-ft wide quad speakers (one in each corner of a really small room), and at least 4 turntables. I don't even try to decorate around them anymore.

teacats, if I may ask... what brand/type are your speakers? And do you like them? They sound just like what I am looking for.

This weekend, we put in the bookcases and television stand of my dreams, and it's all lovely to look at and use, but there is no place for our old, cobbled-together sound system. We ended up stashing the speakers behind the television, and they do not sound good at all!

So, needless to say, we are now in the market for a new sound system.

Please advise!

We have a Bose Theater system -- and their VERY small speakers are incredible!! Simply amazing for movies! LOL!

Orb speakers sound great, very small. Round. Come in many finishes. You'll be surprised. DH is VERY picky.

Sometimes I feel it is kinda like a TV in the room....why bother trying to hide it? It is what it is - it is part of life especially if men are in the house. There are so many things I would do differently if my DH weren't in this house but he is so I have a very masculine den ~ makes him happy. He doesn't ask for much and puts up with me!! LOL

He considers his speakers works of art - I wanted to have an ET designed to hide his speakers (I did atleast get the 24"cube subwoofer hidden) but he wouldn't hear of it. He also likes to see his components.

Perhaps a box built around the speakers with speaker cloth or metal grill painted the same color as the walls? The sub could go in a basket or you could put it under a table or something.

After many years, I have come to the conclusion that men just hear the speakers, and anything that interferes with hearing the speakers is a no-no. I've also concluded that men don't actually see the speakers, even when they are as humongous as Amy's.
Bottom line: if you want to make the speakers invisible, you'll first have to lose the husband.

Amy's are pretty tasteful compared to some I've seen. And my downstairs hipster guy neighbors are shocked into awed respectful silence whenever they've seen the Tannoys.
