Craftsman GDO: Lights Stay On

I finally got around to replacing the lightbulbs on

either side of my GDO unit. Now I know why they burned

out -- they will not shut off. Not after the door opens

and not after the door closes. And not whether I press the

LIGHT switch on the inside wall-mounted control.

Is there an easy fix for this or must I try to replace the

inside wall-mounted control? I have removed this but can't

find a way into the light switch itself, so I'd imagine

it's a problem with the small circuit board in the

control.

The lights are programmed to stay on for 4 1/2 minutes. If they stay on longer than this it is most probably a stuck relay on the logic board. Probably caused by lightning in the area.

Is this fixable? Shot of WD-40 to the relay?

Is the logic board reasonably replaceable??

Some options are: live without the lights, replace
the logic board (how do I isolate the problem here),
or replace the whole unit???

Hi Don and TechDave, I also have a 1/2HP Craftsman GDO and have a similar problems as other posters: when my GDO is open and I hit the wall mount or remote, the GDO will go down about 6 inches and then reverse direction and go back up. The light blinks 10 times, which you indicated was likely a sensor problem. However, I did what TechDave suggested and turned out the lights to see if either of the Green sensor lights went out or blinked, but both Green lights stay on the entire time. The door will go all the way down if I hold the wall mount button down until the door is on the ground. However, the remotes can not get the door to go down. Do you have any suggestions or will I have to buy a new mechanism? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am wondering if this might have something to do with the function that automatically turns your lights on or off when the sensor beam is broken. Also I wonder if programming this function might eliminate your problem. To program the lights to come on automatically when you walk into an open garage you must START with the lights ON. If you don't want that feature and you want to turn it off you must START with the lights OFF. To turn the feature on, turn the lights on manually with the wall switch, then press and hold the LIGHT button for about 10 seconds until the motor unit light bulbs flash. Now, if the light bulbs are on, manually turn them off and then walk out through the open door. The light bulbs should come on. To disable this feature, start with the light bulbs OFF and everything else is the same. I think it is worth a try to see if this helps.

Your remote may have just quit. There is a small LED near where all those white wires go that should blink rapidly if you hold the button down on the remote. If it does this you can try programming the remote. To the left of those white wires you will find a smart/learn button. While holding down the button on your remote press and immediately release the smart/learn button. If the remote still doesn't work then some part in your remote has quit.

They have had lots of problems with the sockets. Try unplugging the opener and use a small screwdriver to pull up on the center contact in the socket.

Replacing the logic board is a major repair. Living without the lights is a nuisance but doable. The relay contacts would be welded together so WD-40 won't work. I would go without the lights until something else happens.

Thanks Don,
Getting out the logic board was easy, but there seem to
be several relays onboard, all of which are sealed and
soldered to the board. A replacement board lists at about
80 bucks. For that, I'll buy a new unit.

Any suggestions for a replacement GDO, probably chain
drive, that will lift a double door??

I see no reason to switch from Craftsman. Makes for an easy replacement and you will have some spare parts.

Yeah, I'm thinkin that as well. If I lo-ball and go
for the el-cheapo, will my remotes and wireless from 10
years ago work on the new unit?? Or should I upgrade to
the 3/4 hp unit complete with 3-button remotes, wall
unit, and wireless entry?? In short, will my old
remote units work on the new one????

BTW - for the same bucks I can get a 1/2 horse Genie
screw drive????
