You haven't chased me off -- I just haven't had anything to say lately! I love your sense of humor and enjoyed it a while back when you were sparring with Tinmantu. HVAC guys should always be teased on a regular basis!! Speaking of which, where has he been? Did he and Kay escape winter by running off to some tropical island? And if so, how come they left us behind?

If your canner is a Presto then spend the $12-15 to buy the 3 weight set. That way you don't have to worry about getting the gauge tested and can just ignore it. The weight set is discussed here in many threads. If another brand with a gauge then you may be forced to have your gauge tested regularly to be safe. But I am more concerned about your inability to control the stove heat and prevent the radical pressure changes that causes the siphoning. Is the stove gas or electric? It does take some practice sessions with the canner and just some jars of water in it but it shouldn't be that difficult to control your pressure. All the way on until your t10 min. of continuous venting is done, then put the weight on and as soon as the pressure gauge reaches 11 bls., slowly begin to reduce the heat in small increments. Hope this helps. Dave PS: As to the "cool air on the jars" bit - yes, instructions say to "not expose them in a draft to cool" but they do need to be out of the canner and on to the kitchen counter. ;)

I live in the Cascade foothills in the Columbia River Gorge, and have killed upwards of 500 large slugs in the yard portion of the property this year, and have not had anywhere near that number for several years previous. And that's just the "morning murders" as my husband calls them. I haven't ventured out at night yet, but I'm seeing a lot more slugs out and about this year. Have you brought in topsoil, mulch, plants, anything like that? Also, you might want to check out the life cycle of a slug - they have lots of babies! I had to pick off many dozens of bitty slugs from my echinacea a few weeks back. (I didn't count those in my death toll!) Best of luck. The most effective way to really make a dent is to go out at night with a bucket of soapy water and a pair of nitrile gloves. Pick and drop, pick and drop. YOu'll be amazed. The slug baits are for the most part very eco-unfriendly, so beware. Many kill pets. I have one bait that I resort to in some areas, it's pet-safe and only gets eaten by slugs and snails, but it's not a cure-all.

Ken, I sprayed it like like twice a month few years ago. Trust me, it just laughs at me. I will see some small dead spots but it doesn't wilt at all. I've read other threads too saying Round-Up didn't kill their soapwort. Floral_uk, Yes, I dug it last year and it still came out this year but it's reduced which is a good sign. Yesterday, I dug it again and this morning. I used a fork like shovel. I was very shocked to see more roots. This plant is crazy! I'll do it again around May if I see more. I made it is I didn't leave anything behind today. We'll find out. Oh, it's the same as my daffodil. I've dug it so many times but every year it comes back. However, they are not as annoying as the Soapwort. I haven't tried RoundUp on daffodil though. They're beautiful and not aggressive. Thank you everyone!

Drawer Essentials, that second pic makes my heart pitter-patter with organizing love! I've measured what I have available, but need to look at those odd tools like ladles. A fair number of my kitchen things are in storage but I do have my most, and moderate, use items. OK, I'm armed with a list of things to stuff into the display drawers! They're 36" wide drawer stacks on that wall so there should be plenty of room...I hope. I've been saving a lot of vertical storage pics these last few weeks, so that's definitely on my mind. As far as what and where, it's a work in progress. I forget what I have because so much is packed away. Pantry - canned and dried goods, quick breakfast and lunch foods, items waiting to go into point of use rotation, basic food storage needs, ziplock bags, DH will have a junk bin somewhere in this area unless I can figure out an option in the laundry room. Bulk flours/sugars/etc. Baking area - Measuring tools, scoops/spoons, mixer accessories, sifter, wax paper, cling-wrap (may be in secondary prep), pie plates, baking tins. Sink - colanders Trash/recycling. We compost but I've realized that it needs to be taken out after prep or they let it sit. Prep - knives, can opener, graters, other prep utensils, towels, bowls, mortars and pestles, food processor, blender, casserole dishes stored vertically (or big pots) depending on room. Cook - spatulas, spoons, ladles, etc., saucepans, skillets and sauté pans, vertically if possible. Secondary prep/oven area - towels, oven mitts, foil, parchment paper, accessories for oven and TO on counter, thermometers, tupperware type containers. Deep drawer will be for large pots (or casserole dishes). I'll have to work in there before I know how I really want the large drawers arranged. Above oven - sheets pans, cooling racks, oven racks Below oven - other bakeware or grilling items Pullout for broom, mop, Swiffer, paper towels, cleansers. I'm still pondering how to utilize it well. I need something there for my side-opening oven clearance. Cleanup zone is opposite and there are drawers and cabinets for silverware, dishes, glasses. Fridge wall is ~60" and perpendicular to the work zones. Between the dining room and next to the fridge I have an 18" drawer stack for coffee/tea items, cups, travel mugs (tall!), shelves for cookbooks, above, and a squat upper cab for vertical platter storage. Cabinet above fridge - infrequent use items I'm remembering more tall things during this exercise. And, I'm feeling overwhelmed and have to take a break! I'll read about someone else's indecisiveness/conundrums for a while, LOL.

O.K. How many of us are out here lurking. My excuse, my teenager keeps changing the computer security so I can't log in to post. I just changed the settings so I can come out of "lurkdom".

I'm having a blast (sarcasm) with my 17 yr old now, char....IMO, the way to deal with teens is to bury them when they are 12, and dig them up when they turn 20 :)

Candler (is that right?) I saw you on another thread. Are you out there? Your member page doesn't say much. Which reminds me that I need to update my own page.

I did not take my camera to work yesterday (I was having a RosannaDanna hair day) but I did talk to the family about me coming to stay a few nights a week so that they could get some sleep. I need to stay busy this time of the year. Summer, I can wear myself out in the garden.

Why is it that they only want to talk to you when you are using the phone or the computer? I was totally alone until I sat at the computer. Got a big shovel? A backhoe maybe?
