Anthropologie melon glass knobs

Has anyone used the Anthropologie melon-shaped mercury glass knobs? They are *exactly* what I want for my guest bathroom vanity, but the reviews give me pause. If you read the reviews, you will believe that they shatter willy-nilly. I'm sure the reviews are often posted by people with a bad experience. Have any of you on the forum had any experience with these knobs? If so, could you please share?

My bathroom vanity is the standard builders oak. I am painting it black. It is off a bedroom that is decorated in black and white toile. The other Anthropologie melon shaped knobs would do, but I like the over-scaled size of the mercury glass knobs. And, I'm mad for mercury glass!

I just had to look and those are just gorgeous.
I would think that once "installed" they would not be prone to shattering- if they shattered on installation I would think that anthropologie would stand behind them and replace them.
Before I read your post more fully, I thought you were just asking if anyone had them- so when I looked at the link and saw how gorgeous they were and not too bad price-wise, the only reservation I had was how to clean them? I mean are they really a tinted glass (which would be fine_) or is there some sort of finish (that I would think would wear off over time?)
Anyway you have me thinking about these for my master bath.

If they are like most mercury glass that I've seen, the finish is on the inside of the glass, so all that is on the outside is a smooth glass finish. If these knobs are like that, cleaning would be no issue. I think a damp cloth would be sufficient.

Fortunately, there is an Anthropologie just a few blocks from DD. If I decide to get these, I'll have her look them over IRL before I buy. I'll probably also have her pick them up at the store for me, instead of buying online. From what I read, the finish can be somewhat inconsistent.

Aren't they fabulous? I had them bookmarked from way back when I was re-doing my kichen and someone on this forum had mentioned them.

I did not sand the cabinets prior to painting. I had read on the kitchen forum, I think, where another GW member recommended Sherwin Williams Prep-Rite Pro Block Interior and Exterior. She said it must say "seals and bonds" on the label. I had the SW Prep-Rite tinted as dark as it could be tinted. I washed the cabinets down to make sure they were clean. Then I put a coat of the SW Prep-Rite on. Waited 24 hours, applied the first coat of black paint, waited 24 hours, applied the second coat of black. Waited 48 hours and rehung the doors. I waited another 24 hours before I attached the knobs. The SW Prep-Rite says you can paint after 4 hours, but in my reading, someone had had bad results when they only waited 4 hours, therefore, I waited 24 hours between coats. The only "issue" I had was when I took the Frog Tape off. One spot about 1/2" by 1", on the front of the vanity against the wall, peeled off. I lightly sanded and touched it up with only one coat of paint, which was sufficient. About Frog Tape, I wish I had read more before I started painting. It is advertised to have some property that causes the tape to seal to the wall when the paint is applied. It is supposed to maintain a sharp line. It did not. However, I've since read that wiping over the tape with a damp sponge prior to painting will activate the "Paint Block Technology."

I thought these were a little different. You can order just about any color tile you want for the accent in the middle. I ordered one just for grins with a "smokey blue" tile in it. (My BS has the same color tile). It arrived yesterday and it was acutally pretty nice - didn't feel cheap at all - felt and looked good. These door knobs are lovely, but I found the installation challenges insurmountable. I suspect this is true of all of the door knobs. This is so unfortunate. All of the knobs are very stylish and would add an eclectic edge to any home. 1. The latch mechanism is not included. I was able to purchase a standard latch from a hardware store. 2. The spindle is way too long. It is 5 inches long. I think this is probably way beyond any standard length in the U.S. I was able to purchase a replacement spindle that was 3.5 inches long. Plus, the spindle was installed in one knob. It was not easy to remove. I had to use vice grip pliers. I know you want it secure, but given the need for a replacement, it would have been easier to deal with a separate spindle. 3. The backplate requires screws. The door has a drilled out hole. There is no place for the screws. I tried doing the installation without the screws. The backplate and knobs are heavy. Even with the locking screws installed on the knobs everything shifts a little with each turn. This throws off the latch. Step 3 was the final sticking point. There was no way, for me at least, to make this work without anchoring the backplate. I used duct tape to hold the backplates in place so I could tighten the knobs. The door knob worked pretty well with the tape in place. Once I took it off, everything moved enough to put the latch out of alignment. But the whole process was frustrating. I understand not including the latch. But the spindle length is at a specialty level. And replacement spindles are not easy to find. I found one package in stock in one hardware store, and I live in a fairly urban area. And now I know I need to be aware of whether or not the backplates need to be anchored with screws.

Joan - Glass knobs on the hutch will look sweet. I have a build in desk that has glass knobs AND SN pulls so I think they look nice even on a single piece of furniture. Everyone carries them. I had purchased one from myknobs as a sample, but ended up buying them at RH because that is where i bought everything else. I suspect there are not many manufacturers of these things so I would not be surprised if they were sourced from one or two places. That said, if you have the time I would get a sample. You would hate to have them arrive and realize they are not nice. Most companies charge a restocking fee, watch for that. Good luck.

I have been eyeing these knobs for months and always wonder why Anthro's knobs don't make it into GW kitchens! They are gorgeous and I think the inconsistency is a plus. I read all the reviews a while ago and it seemed like people overtightened the knobs. So yeah, they seem a little delicate, but unless you have small critters (kids or pets) I would go for it.

sabjimata, no critters and no kiddies. However, it is a guest bathroom and I hate to play "booby trap the guests" (that is where there is something precarious and you know it must be handled a certain way, but it is not readily apparent to a guest, so that when they behave normally whatever it is falls/breaks/does something to cause embarassment to your guests). Nevertheless, I think I'll go for it anyway!

Oh, boy! I HAVE to have some of the Galaxy Knob, Small!! Bathroom in the wings. And then I thought, check Hobby Lobby. I know at one time they had some fancy knobs. Use the coupon to bring the price down;-) But those Galaxy knobs look like exactly the right thing for my bathroom. Wish they were made out of cast iron. Just big kids here.
