brushed nickel vs. polished chrome - which easier to keep clean
Comments (16)I think you're absolutely right, monicakm, it must depend on the manufacturer because, as I said before, there is no consensus. So, the faucet I am thinking about is a Toto (also getting a Toto pedestal sink and toilet). Anyone have Toto faucets in polished chrome or brushed nickel who wants to chime in? Thanks! Here is a link that might be useful: Toto faucet...See MoreAbout to spend a lot of money... is this the right choice??
Comments (20)The term "wood laminate" really bugs me because of the insidious sneaky marketing that's tried to insinuate that laminate is somehow wood. It is NOT wood, nor has it ever been. The more accurate term would be "plastic picture of wood" laminate. You can get actual from a tree wood for the same price as a good laminate. Guess which adds value to your home and guess which doesn't? Guess which adds to the landfills in the future and which can be refinished? Even engineered wood can be refinished in the future if you choose correctly. Flooring should not be looked at as a "temporary" solution that can be discarded later in favor of another style. That's fickle consumerism gone amok. Flooring is part of the home's infrastructure. As such, it should be chosen as a investment in the home's longevity of existence. I'm not saying that laminate doesn't have it's place, such as when you're renting an apartment for a temporary design change, but the whole idea of laminate is based on it's impermanence. Laminate is like a rug, not the stone floor that the rug is laid over....See MoreColor choices for two doors at right angles?
Comments (15)Thanks fellow KTers; I appreciate the help more than you could know! Georgysmom - Black and sleek would be so me, but would not work in this rough and tumble house filled to overflowing with a large, active DH and his even more active, large hunting dogs! Believe me, I've Houzzed, and Pinterested, and Googled imaged until I'm blue in the face. White baseboards and trim seem to be the expected now. I've learned the hard way, with my three "bed" rooms that "white" does not stay "white," even with constant diligence! The trim in this room will be unstained oak. Also, most homes are built with some rhyme or reason to where there can be closets, doors, etc., and some sense of scale and balance. I have a suspicion the people who built this house in 1952, and remodeled in the late 70s, were a bit tipsy. Jim-1, Party Music50, JemDandy, You guys nailed it. Consistency. And making it work for my situation. I think the door choices has jelled in my mind. I do want them to blend in. They are in no way "features!" This is on old, plain house in an old, plain neighborhood and town. I am hoping for "clean, dry, and serviceable" with a large dose of friendliness, welcoming, and basic comfort. The new heat pump/furnace/air conditioning system has added the real comfort and is the catalyst for all this spiffing up. The trim and baseboards will be oak, unstained and finished to match the light floor. The baseboard molding is rather plain, about 5" tall. The oak window/door trim has a slight, non-descript molding to it. I think the doors should be the same satin finish, unstained oak, as the floor and new trim. This is a well used room; it's a TV viewing room / sitting room just off of the kitchen. Two-thirds of the room is "living room" with a tiny "breakfast nook" at the south end, next to the closet area. It has 8' ceilings. There are two windows, two open doorways, and the front and closet door in this room. I'm afraid the "artsy" painted doors I was envisioning would come off looking rather "college dorm" and lock me into only one wall color/furniture choice. I think using the light oak will keep everything subdued. Do you think the visual weight of these close-set doors will be counter-balanced by the media cabinet and two 6' tall bookcase/cabinets I have planned to center on the opposite north wall? My walls are painted a soft sage green; the ceiling is white. I think the crown molding will be white, too; but that will be another conversation posting....See MoreNeed help with metal choice for bathroom. Brass, Matte Black, Chrome?
Comments (4)Jane, thank you for the input. I should have posed my question a bit clearer. I need help with metal for lighting, faucets, etc. I'm looking for suggestions for the entire (overall) look of the bathroom. At first I was going with polished nickel, but the faucet I want to use (Delta/trinsic) does not come in polished nickel. The light fixtures I Iike only come in polished nickel and not chrome. It's just so frustrating. I thought I could do mixed metals, but unsure of that too. I read a number of folks say don't mix polished nickel and chrome. I was thinking matte black, but nervous. My husband won't go for brass (after posing my above question), though I agree, it would be interesting. Thank you again, and if you have any other thoughts, I'd greatly appreciate them. The double vanity is 80" (white), there will be a free standing tub (white), with separate shower in white subway tiles, the quartz counter tops are a medium gray, dark slate floors, and lastly white walls. It's so hard for me to use my imagination and picture different metals in the space....See Morehortonbrass
