using 3-dimensional decorations on fabric

I'm about to start making a jumper for my DGD. Before I start cutting it out I have a question. The fabric I got has a 3-dimensional design on it that would be around the bottom of the skirt. (It's made to look like flowers). I originally bought enough fabric to have this go all the around the skirt, but now I'm wondering if I should only have it on the front? Would having it on the back interfer with sitting(lumpy, etc)?

Thanks for your help, suggestions.

It depends on how dimensional the embellishments are and how long the skirt is. If the flowers are tight pom-poms the size of golf balls and the skirt is short, it'll make her crazy when sitting.

If they're large and the skirt hangs to her knees or lower, they won't press between the chair and her legs/behind and shouldn't pose a problem.

If the embellishments are small, I'd go all the way around the perimeter. It will look better that way, not like an afterthought.

My thoughts are of laundering--are you creating an ironing nightmare for your daughter or daughter-in-law?

Thanks, those are good thoughts. I'll check just where it will fall. I believe the fabric is 50/50 cotton/polyester so I think it'll be ok as far as ironing goes. I can't get to it til tomorrow to check this out. Have company coming today.

Yes, sewing is fun, tho all the different aspects to think about sure makes my head spin sometimes.

I need advice on using burlap in holiday decorating

All burlap is not equal as others have found. I have 2 runners I made of burlap left-over from another craft project. It was years since I bought it so it might have aired out further altho I don't remember it ever having an undesirable scent. This 'decorator burlap' also seems to be stiffer and finer weave than the burlap coffee bags I bought more recently. They are coarse and smelled of both burlap and coffee beans. I washed them on gentle in the machine, dried them flat, and the smell greatly diminished so it's not objectionable. I expect the burlap that has a chemical scent has been treated with insect repellent which is common with products shipped from tropical or 3rd world countries. I used to have a store and products made in China often had such an odor. I always washed my hands well after unpacking them and advised my staff to do so also.

My mother used a smaller, two-layer Whitman's box as a sewing box. It had a lot of little cardboard compartments. As decor, I could see this as the start of a collection. Keep on the lookout for other pretty boxes that you like and when you have enough, display them on a shelf in the kitchen. I like luckygals' idea of spraying it to preserve it. I have a huge tin box that once held Walker's shortbread. It is mostly red plaid, with a bit of Christmas decoration on it. During the year, it holds some Christmas stuff and acts as storage. This time of year, it gets dusted off and filled with old ornaments and acts as a big decoration. It's also used to transport large numbers of Christmas cookies to parties. But it was far too good-looking to throw out.
