popcorn texture shouldn't come off easily, right? not unless it's

...wet, yes? But ours is coming off, at a touch.

I noticed a little spot in the hallway ceiling that looked kind of funny. DH got up on a chair and poked at it. No discernible moisture, but it came off the ceiling in clumps, and we now have a 3x3" spot of bare drywall amid the popcorn. No drips. No wetness. But there it is.

NB: I have loathed the popcorn since we moved in and were too cheap to pay someone $2K to take it all down. (cathedral ceiling in LR, vaulted ceiling in MBR -- those we'd want someone else to do -- and since that initial estimate have thought about doing DSs' rooms and the hallway on our own, since those are just flat 8' ceilings.)

NB2: previous owner was a DIY type, more enthusiasm (or cheapskate tendencies) than talent if judging by the tile floor she messed up. If I remember our conversations correctly, the roof was replaced 4 years ago... by her dad. The inspector thought it was fine. We have not seen any leakage, even in recent torrential rains, but I wonder.

So do I rejoice and get a scraper? Panic and call a contractor? both?
