What age is a good one to start scrapbooking?

My soon to be 9 year old has shown an interest in scrapbooking but I don't want to have to do all the work for her. Is this a good age to start? I don't know much about it myself. We bought a kit from Wal-Mart (first mistake), but then visited a specialty store that sold the good stuff but the prices were kind of steep. If anyone out there could help me and suggest some good starter kind of stuff, I'd sure appreciate it. I'd like to make her Easter Basket out of this kind of stuff. Thanks for all your help.

Dear Sandra,
I think it's a great idea! If she doesn't already own one buy her a camera you can get a pretty decent one for as little as $30.00, then she can capture her own shots. I would also suggest checking out the scrapbook store to see if they have a teen crop or youngster crop. That way you could get her a gift certificate for that shop and she could buy supplies as she uses them, and she would not have to buy all the punches, etc. as she could use the ones at the store for free while she is there. I would look at a couple of pictures that she wants to scrap and then buy a few supplies for just those photos so that if she finds she doens't like the craft she is not stuck with unused supplies. Sandra, my 9 year old son is dieing to start scrapbooking. I've kind of put him off because it's the only quiet time I get (I also have 6 and 4 year old boys). But it's probably time to stop being selfish and let him start. Let us know how it goes with your daughter.

Greetings again, folks, And when did you ever see a G I C ... ... produce any growth? The only return that they'll produce ... is produced now ... and taxed now ... at top rate. The stock that I bought 45 years ago for about $4.20 or so was paying about 10 - 12 cents annual dividend ... which was taxed then at low rate, plus for the latest six years at an even lower rate. In June of '07, when I could have sold it for $107.00, it was paying me $3.08 per year, at that even lower tax rate than earlier, and the annual payment increased to $3.48 later that year. Their involvement with the U.S. financial fiasco resulted in the price of the stock sslliding tto $40.00 - but they maintained the dividend at $3.48. The price has recovered to about $75.00 now ... and they recently increased the dividend to $3.60. That current income is taxed at a much lower rate than interest that I might earn. And I haven't had to talk to the income tax people about the increase in value of the asset, during all of those years. I don't have to report to the income tax people until I either sell the stock ... or die ... neither of which I plan to do, this week or next. When I sell the stock, I deduct the $4.20 that I paid from the, e.g. $74.20? proceeds of sale, to produce a capital gain of $70.00 ... and I pay tax at regular rate on half of that amount. But not until I sell, or die - nothing till then. However - if I transfer the stock to a charity, I get a tax-deductible receipt for the full amount - and I pay no income tax on that increase. And didn't pay about 2.5% of the value annually to a management company, as I'd have to with a mutual fund. You figure it: 45 years at 2.5% of the ongoing value of the fund ... comes out to about 112.5%, doesn't it? No wonder few mutual funds grow faster than the segment of the market in which the manager operates! Looks like a good deal, to me. ole joyful

I would suggest that everyone try to find a scrapbooking group in your area. I'm a visual person, and it helps me to see what everyone else is doing. It's nice to see that you aren't the only one out there with the hobby and provides some motivation for getting stuff done. We have a local store that offers a crop night each week and various classes throughout the year. Last night was my second time there. If you need ides or get stuck on something, you always have someone to ask for advice. The people who run the crop are helpful also. They often have ideas on things like cleaning up messes on a page, useful coverups, and they know the best places to look for ideas. In addition to this crop night, I'm starting to get together with friends to scrapbook also. It's nice to be able to set aside time to scrapbook without the kids and have a little adult time.

Oh my goodness! First of all let me explain that this hobby is ADDICTIVE!!!!! Second let me say that it's TONS OF FUN! I would suggest going to some classes if they are available in your area first, but if not go easy on the supplies at first as it will not take long before you have a house full! I would suggest getitng several photos together with a common them, ie Birthday, Boating, Vacation, etc. with at least 3 good photos per theme, then buy the stickers and paper for just those photos at first to see if indeed you like doing this. You will need at least the following supplies: Acid free paper, glue, scissors, one multi shaped template for cutting photos mats, and stickers to match the theme of the photos you are going to be doing first. You can buy single sheets of paper at Micheal's, and at most scrapbook stores. DO NOT LIMIT YOURSELF TO ONE COMPANY! There are a few suppliers who will try and tell you that their product is SAFER, BETTER ,etc, this is just not true, acid free is acid free, PERIOD! So don't get trapped into the more expensive products, this craft is expensive enough already. You will need page protectors for the size of paper you buy, which is either the larger 12 x 12 or the smaller 8.5 x 11. Either is fine it is just a personal preference which you do. Make sure you get a GOOD idea book and READ it BEFORE you cut your first photo, make sure you have double prints or at least the negatives of photos you start out with because you will get better at this craft over time and you don't want to start with Grandmas pictures! We just enrolled in AARP so I need to check out some of the advantages. We also have some AAA discounts that we don't always use. They(AAA) has a good discount for eyeglasses if you get them from one of the stores they recommend. LensCrafters is one.DH got 30% off there on his eyeglasses. I thought that was pretty good. We also have the Golden Buckeye Card. I have yet to use that and have had it for some time now. I always forget to ask. When I was 50 the last thing I wanted to think about was a senior discount.LOL Thanks for the link.

My daughter is too young to do it by herself; but boy does she have fun trying!! She's 3 and whenever Mommy scraps she likes to sit down and use stamps, markers and stickers to make pages of her own. I have included her pages in a few albums for family members and they loved it!

I think kids can begin to scrapbook at 7 or 8 if they really want it. (before if they are gift or if you have time to help them!). I give you a link to a friend of mine's page . Sorry it is in frenh. But go to the bottom of the page, click on 'pages' then choose 'les pages de Louis Dominique- 8 ans' ou les 'les pages de Jennifer- 9 ans' and you'll have an idea about what kids are able to do. Generally they enjoy it and want to do again. But I presume that at first you need to have time with them. You can also visit the other pages, even if you don't understand french, some are really great!
