What type of film do you use?

I'm curious as to what everyone is using. I only use Kodak and have recently discovered 800 speed. It takes much clearer pictures. Anyone else have a preference to type/speed?

On the same note, where do you all get your film developed? I've always gone to our local Walgreens but I wasn't happy with my pictures that I picked up yesterday (I don't use the 1 hour service - I send them overnight). Some looked scratched and some weren't cut on the line so I have a small section on the edge of the picture (about 1/16th of an inch) of the previous picture. I called and they said they'd either redevelop them or credit me, but in my opinion, I shouldn't even have to deal with that. THey should have been cut properly to begin with.

Anyway, just curious what everyone else is doing.

Well I use 400 speed film. I did use kodak for a while but now I use the one from costco 'casue it is cheaper.

I have had it developed at costco (I really didn't like the way they came out). Then CVS, they turned out well but to expensive for me. Now I leave them overnight at Big Kmart. I like it 'cause it is relatively inexpensive and you get doubles for free. And I have to say I always love having doubles.

I am in love with Kodak Max 400. It's the only one I use now.

I think a lot depends on your soil and the amount of time, money and effort you want to expend on fertilizing. Some rosarians make their own organic mixes, some swear by nothing more than Miracle Gro. In my alkaline clay soil, semi-organic garden, I use Mills Magic or a locally packaged organic, called Miller's Blue Label made with dried poultry waste. It's tough to tell whether one is better than the other but MM is sold through a local rose society and the MBL is a local product. I also use another locally packaged product sold through a nursery that isn't organic but it only takes a 1/4 cup per 3ft of bush so it's economical and fast-acting so I use it for the spring feeding frenzy. Another product I really like is that Miracle Gro Easy Feed (or some-such) that screws into a hose-end sprayer harness. That stuff is just WAY too easy to use when 25% of your roses have to be hand-watered anyway. Since we don't fertilize during June through September, I put down a little Osmacote in early June. No matter where you are or what you use, though, make sure you water the soil thoroughly before and after using any fertilizer or amendment. I don't advocate using a sytemic rose food ever. There's something about applying toxic chemicals above the water table that makes me shudder.

Prepare to gasp... I am dragging hoses so this is all 2nd hand information. Here in Arlington they have new "laws" in recent years to help "save" water or something. If you are going to install a drip system the city requres it be inspected. Doesn't sound too bad does it? If you have beds, they must have drip....sounds great too doesn't it? A neighbor bought her home since these green laws went in. She got estimates for her modest 50's home on a city lot. Nothing fancy or exotic. A couple of french drains. Here's the gasp part. Don't look down in this post... Take a minute to think what you'd consider exhorbitant... I mean extreme! Got it? $15,000.0 yes that's what she said. Got the estimate from 2 different reputable companies. She asked if she could just have the above ground sprinklers that could hit the beds, that would be MUCH cheaper. Sorry, if you have beds you must have drip and the city must approve it. She's dragging hoses too. errrgh...that HD system sounds like a real deal if you are allowed to have one. still shaking my head and hoping that some how city hall comes to its senses. c

What type thimble do you use?????

I can't sew at all without a thimble, but I only use the cheap metal ones. When I hand quilt I use one with an indented end on my right hand so it holds the needle in place and a rounded end one on my left hand for the underside of the quilt because I like to rock the needle. I often think the metal ones are not very good for my fingers but I don't think I could cope with some of those modern bulky ones. I suppose it would be best to try them out at exhibitions or in the quilt shops before buying to see if you'll get your money's-worth.

BE CAREFUL!! You should never heat water in Pyrex in the microwave without a disturber in the water. A bamboo skewer is a good choice. If you don't have something with an irregular surface that the bubbles can form on, the water can look like it's not boiling at all, and can get superheated. The superheated water can explode out of the cup. Pyrex is too smooth. Fine for pie or even soup, but put something tall enough to go from the bottom to the top of the cup in it, if you're going to heat water, or put a spoon in it before doing anything else with it, to let the bubbles out. Pyrex used to be borosilicate glass. You can still get Pyrex branded borosilicate in other countries, with the name licensed by the makers. In the U.S. (PA), it's now made by a separate company from Corning, and is tempered soda-lime glass, which is supposed to be harder to break but less heat resistant. It's not inferior in quality, just different in properties, and Corning was also selling tempered soda-lime glass, besides the borosilicate, for decades before they spun off Pyrex, so age doesn't tell the whole story.

I use Kodak Gold 400 and have it developed at Osco Drugs, no complaints so far.

I use Kodak 400 or fujui ( mispelled oops! ) I was told by a film developer that they are the best brand to develop ( who knows? ) I have even used Polaroid..( cheaper price ) I get my film developed at Alco....on tuesdays and saturday you get double prints for the price of single prints. They are sent out to a company...and there back in the store in 2 days. After you have 10 rolls developed you get the 11th free. ( punch card ) Not to bad....except for the time....well that's another story!

I'm a professional photographer - well, I was until I retired a few years ago. I use FUJI 400 speed only. My favorite camera to use is a very old Pentax K1000 - the best camera I've ever had.

Thanks. Looks like everyone is happy with 400 speed. I was using 800 for a while and thought I saw a difference, but now I really can't. Guess it's not worth it to pay the extra money for a difference I can't see.

I've never used Fuji film before. Maybe I'll give it a try the next time I need film!!

I use Fuji 200 (all-around/multi-purpose). I've had the best luck with this brand & speed. (If you have a Sam's Club near you, they sell it in multi packs of 6 for $8.99 and then there is a mail in rebate for $4.00 on the back of the film!!) I usually have mine developed at Eckerd and of course get doubles!! I tried Walmart developing before, however even though it is cheaper the pictures didn't look as nice. Hilary

I have just recently really gotten into photography and I had a very experienced person tell me that Fuji is just as good as Kodak! And it's 1/2 the price. So that's all I buy and use now and I can't tell the difference! To the people that spend all the money on Kodak Gold......stupid!!!

No, not stupid. I see a very noticeable difference between Kodak and Fuji. Kodak colors are much more vibrant.

I use Kodak or Fuji, but always 400. Believe it or not, I send my out mail order to York photo. It's cheap, I don't have to schlep my kids around and they do a good job.

I usually use whatever was on sale that week at Target- sometiems it is Fuji, other times (usually) it is Kodak.

The US Postal Service lost my film either on its way to or from York developers- from that moment on, I have always gotten mine developed at the local Giant grocery store. Whatever lab they send it to does a great job.

In a pinch when I need photos quickly for the school's yearbook (I'm the advisor), I'll get them developed at WalMart's one hour. I never get my own film developed there though, because the colors never seem to look right.

I use Kodak Gold 400. The # is the ISO speed which means the amt. of light you need to let in to expose your picture. So if you are taking pictures indoors or a dark area you will need a higher ISO (Ie. 800+) if you are taking bright pictures then probably around 400 or 200 ISO will do. The higher the ISO you go you start to lose the qualitly of the picture so it won't be as sharp and colourful. Hope ya learned something. =) I'm sure most knew this just for the ones that didn't.
