Me, I'd get it first and worry about the color later. Although at first glance, black would be an excellent choice.

I think it's adorable. I agree with offering fifty dollars for it. He has it way too high. It looks as though you have gold WTs in the next room. You might get lucky and only have to add a brown glaze to get the desk to work.

No doorway to block, just a walkway to get to the door which isn't used very often. DH's recliner backs up to the left of the CD cabinet. He keeps a phone and the answering machine on a table by his chair, so I will be able to clear his table off, too (that is always a challenge, LOL!).

Too bad they painted it, not that I dislike the color. You could overpaint with black but let some of the color show through.

It would look good under that picture, and you could probably find a wall mounted CD holder or else put them all into those book-like CD album thingies, which means ditching the jewel boxes or storing them, or else just transferring them all to an iPod, not that I've done that myself.

ideefixe, I've done that book-like CD thing with our movies. Boy did it save a lot of space! I do need to do it with the music, too. That cabinet is a cheapy thing and I won't miss it.

I have that same desk (or one very similar) in walnut. I really want to paint mine. Too bad we can't just swap.

I have that same desk too, but trestle type legs. Antiques Road Show would shake their heads though because it the finish had turned almost black and we stripped it.

I love it, even in its present ochre condition! I hope you get it (and yep, $50 would be a fantastic deal!).

It sounds like my desk has some great company! I'm trying to get a hold of the owner (the parents of the guy that listed it), so I'll let you know what happens.

I am glad you are going to try to get it. I'd skip the black. I think a dash of color would be perfect in that color, or the glaze, as suggested. What other colors do you have going on in that room?

I really like the ochre too-- it is earthy and unexpected. Do let us know how you make out.

It is called a spinet desk. My mother bought one ages ago at estate sale at an old elegant home. It is walnut. Little Sis has it. It is a wonderful piece and very versatile. I think it would be a bargain at $75.

Why does my CL only have blue plush beanbag chairs with beer logos?

Black is always a good choice, but you do have quite a bit of black in the room already. If you don't like the ochre, how about a dark barn red to bring in the color of your art on the other side of the doorway? I have a barn red hutch next to my black painted kitchen chairs and I really like the combo.

It looks to be very like mine, which was my grandmother's, circa 1920's. It's called a spinet desk as the top folds over and closes . The desk top/writing surface slides back or out. Mine has 'Grand Rapids' mark inside the drawer and was originally a mahogany stain. I antiqued it apple green 30 yrs. ago and now that color is back in vogue.:>) It's in my kitchen...a great little small desk. If refinished nicely ( vs. painted) it's value would be about $350, I believe. Get it and paint it and enjoy!

After hearing all the history of this piece, I am even move excited to get it :-) You guys have described the desk perfectly. It sounds like it is made of a good solid wood, too. The owner told me last night she had her sewing machine sitting on it and really had a hard time deciding whether to sell it or not. I've arranged to go look at it Friday evening. It is about a 2 hour drive each way, and it will be a nice drive if my kids don't fight in the car too much, LOL!.

If the ochre color doesn't work out, I'm warming up to the idea of a red. I had a lot of brown's and wood tones already going on in that area. In the kitchen (which is right next to this area) my back splash is a terracotta color, so a blue red won't work, but something more on the orange side, might. I won't be in a big hurry to change the color, but I'll be back to let you guys tell me what you think.

I do want to thank newhomebuilder for all her great CL finds. It is her area CL that I found this piece. The owner of the desk lives in a very historic part of the state and I wish I had time to spend in her town. She described a lot of fun things to see and plenty of antique stores to visit, too. Nothing is ever good on my area CL listings.

Well, I finally got the desk. I've had a head cold most of the week, so I haven't done much. Here it is:

I'm still not sure I like the color. It's been painted more than once and it's chipping in a few places. And the parts that move and close don't work that well because of the thickness of the paint. My dh says he'd like to see it stained and I'm inclined to agree. But, that will be when I get some other projects done that I already have started :-)

I'm not sure I like this lamp there. It has a low watt, frosted bulb, but it shows below the shade and it is really annoying. I didn't have another lamp in the house that was the right height. Also, once I get everything arranged, I'll do something about all the cords hanging down.

I think it is the cat's meow!! FAB. And I have total desk envy because I would like the same kind of little desk for my dining room, in the same kind of place as yours is, and for the same reasons, lol! I guess I'd better peruse CL more often.
