The cabinets are beautiful. It appears the raised panels have a deep bevel. I wonder if a 1'' bevel on the counter would coordinate better with the cabinets than a dupont edge. Just a thought.

i agree with you that those cabinets, with their deep, rich, furniture-like finish, and fairly formal-looking door style call for a more 'fancy' edge treatment like an ogee.

i'm not familiar with a 'dupont' edge. i'll have to look it up. we did a "large ogee" on our counters as somewhat of a compromise--i wanted a formal look, my wife wanted easy to clean and less succeptible to chipping.

here's a link that shows a dupont edge. frankly, i think it's a bit too simple for what you seem to want and the look of your cabinets.

I like the dupont edge, but I too have a large ogee. We previously had a small ogee and I never found them a problem to keep clean. I did have one house that had a waterfall edge - now that was much hard to keep clean.

I think the Dupont would be wonderful with your gorgeous cabinets! A simple edge would be far too plain for your beautiful set-up. Our ogee edges (everywhere) have been no problem at all, and I think once your counters are in with a nice Dupont edge you'll be glad you chose it.

Man, oh man, I looove your cabinets!! My island has a double ogee, so you know where I stand on this. An edge like ed's at the very least, but an ogee would be beautiful. BTW, no chipping or discomfort issues after 2 1/2 years.

Well thank you, everyone. The cabinets are inexpensive imports, but the top of the "cheap" line, and still solid maple with wood boxes. We will see how they hold up. The ogee edge the countertop company uses is a little exaggerated compared to some I have seen, and I think more than what edlakin linked to (think you, edlakin) and I might consider adding 1/2" to the overhang so I don't loose the 3/4" usable counter space that it takes up. Only these cabinets did not come with full extension slides as an option, so the additional overhang might hamper getting in the very back of top drawers a little. I have never had full extensions, so I guess you don't miss what you never had. :) There are only 3 top drawers, so upgrading the slides later might be an option also, if it were a problem. Does anyone know if you can do that? Anyway, a little wider counter would mean I could move the sink forward a little closer to the front of the sink base and have a little extra room behind the sink. I am glad to hear no problems with chipping or breakage with the ogee because it makes the countertop 1/2 the original thickness of the material or even less. The Dupont was the next closest but a little more "beefy".

With the large majority of people here going very simple, I am a little surprised at the number of votes for the Ogee or Dupont. Makes me feel better about getting one that it might not look "too" busy with these cabinets.

Beautiful kitchen! The cabinets are gorgeous. I like the dupont edge. I love your "temporary" counters. We are headed to Tennessee this week to put in some that are very similar :).

What about the Cove dupont? Does your fabricator offer that? Definitely think your gorgeous cabinets will look best with a fancier edge than a simple bevel or eased edge.

I'm not normally a huge fan of Stainless steel either, but your appliances are making me rethink that position! :>)

I have the eased edge on my Cambria quartz and am very happy with it. I think you've made an excellent choice with the Dupont edge! Can look Traditional or Contemporary, in my opinion, depending on the cabinets. Your cabinets are gorgeous and I think it will look outstanding : )....

Wow, for a gal whose been without a kitchen that even has running water since last Oct. I have been pretty discouraged, and you guys are a great pick me up. I had seen so many beautiful painted kitchens here I was second guessing myself about my choices a lot and beginning to wonder if I should have waited and gone with more expensive cabinet that had some of the nice painted finishes.

I may go back to the ogee edge. Still just not sure. They do not offer a large number of fancy edges. Bull nose, half bull nose (also called a demi in above link), straight or eased, bevel, Ogee and Dupont. I have a feeling there may have been a third type of bull nose but I can't remember what it was. I am not sure, there might have been a simple cove, but nothing fancier like a cove dupont, double ogee or waterfall, because I pulled out the fancy edges to compare right away, then pulled out the bevel and straight. I pretty much eliminated the rest as not really blending with my my particular cabinets. I will double check when they are here to template on Tuesday. If they had a triple waterfall or cove dupont I am sure I would have gone for that despite telling myself not to "overdo" it, because although I like simple, I also like pretty and fancy. I esp. like that cove dupont. Just never sure when to stop and keep the rest simple to avoid overkill and when to keep with similar styles.

By the way jb1176, yes the center panel IS a deep bevel, so you are right that the bevel would pick that up. Good eye! I want the countertop to look like it goes with the cabinets. Its OK if it decreases the formality a bit as long as it looks right with them. I do like the fancier edges also, but I don't want it to fight with the cabinets. If anything, I might have gone with too fancy a cabinet, and I like them but am not really trying to make them even fancier. I just want it to look planned and balanced.

I'd really like to know more about where you got your cabinets. Is there a website? I will probably never be able to afford some of the high-end cabinets that I love, so yours looks like a great alternative. I also want something with alot of detail in it like yours. They're absolutely gorgeous!

Thank you. The company is JSI. The wesite is JSIcainetry.com. The guy who installs them is young and started his own business. I work with his mother. He only carries these and one line of natural Hickory cabinets because he generally markets to budget minded customers. His "slogan" is the most cabinets for the least price. Anyway, when he did his reasearch he dedided, I guess, that these were the best value. I know one or two other people here have used the brand, as have several people I work with. They do not have the lifetime waranty that many larger companies give. They are 5/8" plywood boxes, if you care about that. I bought the hype about about it initially but honestly now figure, my last cabinets were pressed wood, I guess, boxes. They were here when I bought the house but they held up fine.
JSI cabinets are available on ebay if you want to install yourself and feel confident in doing all kitchen planning yourself. Otherwise you could contact JSI to see they have a retailer near you. I would definately order the cabinets already assembled. As you might have seen others here have had huge problems with ready to assemble cabinets that were not well done and did not go together well, and I wouldn't want to spend the money and then not have them be square or put together well or properly. The guy who installed my kitchen orders them assembled, and I am sure he would not if it was worth his while to put them together and they went together easily.
Also, while the basic cabinets are inexpensive, add ons I did like a glass door, solid maple turn posts, wide molding and addional rope trim, and Rev-a-shelf pull outs, to mention a few, added a lot to the price both for materials and finish labor.
While they have some nice options, the number of options are very limited. That is one way they keep the price down. So make sure they have what you need before they start. They may come out with one, but when I ordered mine, for example, they did not offer appliance garages.

One more thing, almost every "line" JSI carries is a different quality. This one (Georgetown) and the glazed distressed painted finish (Arlington) I believe are the top quality lines with the heaviest self closing slides, full overlay doors, and dovetail drawers. The next is the Lexington, which a glazed medium brown, and is close in price but just a few hundred less, without the features I just mentioned. The colonial maple is less expensive, and has raised panel doors but slab drawers. so just read the descriptions carefully to see what might be being left out of a particular line and if it will matter to you at all. You cannot upgrade between lines, for example get the heavier glides in the lexington or colonial maple lines.
