Grout repair and cleaning help please

I am currently remodeling my kitchen. In order to put in an island, I removed a peninsula and removed the appropriate tiles. Dh is now replacing the tile and will regrout. The old grout was never sealed (arg!) so we have dirty grout and need to match it. What to do?? Is there a way to clean it and then match it? The kitchen is pretty big so it will be a big job to clean it. I appreciate your advice! Thanks.

There are grout colorants that you can apply that change the color of the grout, as well as sealing it. So you can have one color grout in your kitchen. I don't know the manufacturer or product names, but I've heard that they work well.

Roger,

Thank you so much for your suggestion. We re-colored the grout in half her kitchen today. What a difference it makes. The place looked so grungy before our efforts. We hope to finish it tomorrow, and it has to dry for 72 hours, so cooking is out for a few days.

Thanks for the help. I had no idea such a product was out there.

Oxi-Clean powder made into a paste with some water can help with the white grout. Try in a spot and make sure it doesn't cause the floor to be too slick. I used it on tile walls and it worked very well. Just apply the paste with your finger and let it dry a little before scrubbing with a small brush to see how it works in your situation. (I used it on glazed tile, not tumbled marble.) If the grout is moldy, try Tilex Spray for Mold Removal. It works fast and does a great job. I also swear by baking soda and water for some stubborn stains. Hope this helps.

I think I might have gotten it fixed...found an article on the internet about taking out the drawer and then the fabric softener insert and be sure that the hole through the support post for the insert is clear. Found a bunch of gunk there that looked like it might have been clogging that hole and removed it. Then I ran a "short wash" with vinegar in the fabric softener partition, and it was empty at the end of the wash. A good sign. Anyways, sometimes things are easier than they look *smile*. By the way, I'd be really happy to find something to use that helps with wrinkling that isn't fabric softener. That stuff is really gunky and provides food for mildew and mold behind the drawer. I clean that part out periodically with a bleach solution, and leave the drawer ajar between washes (other people in my family forget to do this, though). But it would be really nice to find an alternative to fabric softener. Thanks. -Roger

Clean out any really soft rot, then use Minwax Wood hardener VERY liberally to saturate the wood at the rot places. You can then fill in any remaining hole with Minwax high performance wood filer. Sand, prime, and paint. It may well be cheaper to just replace a few boards.

I'd score it with a carbide blade in an oscillating tool then break it up by gently tapping with a chisel. First take out the grout surrounding it, then see if there is enough room to slip the oscillating tool blade between the soap dish and the wall tile. If you can score from the back side it should be easy to break it up without damaging the tile. Alternately take out both the dish and surrounding tiles and make it a "feature" by using a colored or patterned tile around the soap dish if you can't find matching replacement tiles. Some makers (eg American Olean) have replacement tiles that are still astonishingly good matches decades later for their standard tiles.

Oops, did not explain. Daughter just moved into her 1st house built in 1950. Remodeled badly in 1970 when previous owner bought it. Not well maintained. The grout in the kitchen was missing in spots and soooo dirty. We cleaned the grout using recommended cleaner, patched it, and applied the colorant, which is great. Feels so much cleaner in there now, and it will do for the several years they have to live with it until they can afford the redesign of their kitchen.
