A nice versatile piece! Just depends on the color/finish and what decor you surround it with. I think it would work with so many styles. From modern to rustic cottage.

Keep in mind that context is a huge part of this piece's success in the inspiration picture.

It works in this LR partly because of the significant contrast between it and the smooth, highly polished, decorative style in the rest of the room.

In a different room where the other stuff was more plain, or straightforward looking (and I think of "Craftsman" as being a very straightforward looking style) it might have a completely different - and less attractive - effect.

Right. Context is big, big. It looks rustic modern to me all by itself. I agree that it could do something nice for a cottage look seeking to break away from a hidebound notion, but it would be important to do a good job creating it. Super simple, but decently crafted as far as it goes. The one in the picture looks as if it might be waxed? Then, if you wanted to go that way, echo the modern touch somewhere else, art or ?

I want to stay away from too cottage-y, more of a contemporary coastal cottage vibe. I have a fantastic copper pot I want to use with it, and the lamp I am going to use has a traditional shape, but modern shade.

I like it, but I just don`t want that primitive, shabby chic look. I like the style of it a lot, but wonder if its just too plain. Maybe Im focusing too much on the dark stain finish. Im planning to do more of a satin paint finish-just havent decided on the color yet. I like the X shape much better than if it was just plain straight legs.

One thing to keep in mind is that the "rustic" handiwork of this piece possibly looks much better in stained/polished wood than it might when painted? Painted surfaces need a lot of smoothing, filling and prep to look really well-finished, but the charm of this piece is that it's got a more surplus-lumber, nailed-and-hewn vibe. Just a thought.

Feel like something is missing, it looks empty to me. Would add a shelf right in the middle where the boards cross. Then the table could give you some added simple decor. I don't think this would change the concept of the table. And I'm a rustic person.

Can we see the room? Is it that you don't want a dark stain or you don't want any stain? I feel like painting it will take a very different direction (modern, almost).

What if you built it with a polished wood surface instead of a rough one, with a medium or light stain, in pine or maple?

The room hasn't been painted yet-it's getting a total overhaul next month when I finally have time to dedicate to the house (wedding is taking priority right now!)

The paint treatment I'm thinking is with chalk paint, slightly distressed and waxed, so the plain pine will be fine. I'd get more of a finish grade wood. I debated a stain, but lighter in color, but frankly, I'm so over wood-the room has exposed wood ceilings and clear finish pine wainscotting. I am planning to paint it all!

I do think it looks "primitive." There is nothing wrong with that in the correct setting, but if that isn't a look you want, don't do it. If you're handy enough to make this one, you can make a different one that doesn't look as simple.

I agree with circuspeanut that part of the "rustic" appeal of this piece is the dark staining. I have a feeling with paint it might resemble a repurposed palette that someone painted. To me, that would lean towards industrial (palette) or primitive (simple design.)

(I really hope the above doesn't sound like I'm being mean. I hesitated to reply as it is, but I do think the OP wants honest opinions.)

Forboystoo, it's amazing how a little pastel paint job makes the table go from rustic to cottage! I'm saving your picture because we have a lot of those boards and machinery in the shed. :)

On looking again at this thread, though, I wondered if Pesky might be most happy with her creation if she regarded it as a piece of sculpture.

Weathered look wood, perhaps, but put together very simply and accurately, then carefully sanded and waxed. Imagine what it might look like if the price for this primitive piece was $1200 in a fine furniture emporium on Beverly Boulevard. No matter how "primitive" and "rustic," those pieces never look like a 10-year-old knocked them out for a Father's Day present.
