Door bottom for exterior door

In our den, we have a french door that opens inward and leads out onto the patio. The weatherstripping on the original door is worn out and a driving rain now brings water into our den and has started to warp the hardwoods.

The door is metal and the existing door bottom has a plastic flange that snaps into the hollow space in the bottom of the door. I can't find anything like the existing door bottom at Ace/HD/Lowes.

What are my options?

Install an exterior grade threshhold under the existing doors.

You will have to cut out the floor/surface to install a new threshhold. A metal one will be more maintenance free.

The applicable models are available at home improvement/hardware stores.

We are considering all the same issues as this poster. Our fridge will be on the far left of the row of cabinets in a galley kitchen, so it seems that opening a single door left-hinge fridge will be more convenient than an FD. I also am very concerned about energy efficiency and durability, so I have some questions about how well the FD models will seal long term. I have no interest in throwing my $2000 fridge out in 5 years! We did find a GE model that seems to fit the bill: PDCS1NBWLSS GE Profile Energy Star 21.1 Cu. Ft. Stainless Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - Left Hinged. We have not bought this yet but are still shopping around. We want a modest sized one like this (again to avoid wasting energy for space we rarely need), but there may be something similar in a larger size. Good hunting! Good luck!

Exterior door and storm door...replace or not

Okay, being a pro, you'll know what I'm talking about. Chipping and peeling of the wood at the bottom of the door, both front and back sides. I'm assuming this is a veneer layer and it has been mostly affected by moisture over the years. The threshold has never been maintained or replaced and the door is used multiple times a day. Some of the chipped pieces have come off, but it's not terrible yet. I just don't know if damage has gone deeper that meets the eye. In the last couple of weeks we have noticed the keyed deadbolt is much harder to lock than it was before...the key won't turn all the way now unless we pull up on the doorknob slightly to give the door a little "lift". Weatherstripping has never been replaced...it's the original nailed-on felt. There has always been a storm door until about a year ago. It rains a lot here and the door leads directly to an aggregate concrete patio which seems to stay wet and damp long after rain ends. I do love the door, and know things used to be made much better than they are now. I don't have a lot to spend. Is there a way I can save this one? I'm a pretty good handyman with the proper instructions. If I can save it, what type of replacement weatherstripping would you recommend? There are so many choices. For my storm door choice, I'm hoping to get a locking door with retractable screen from Lowe's or Home Depot. This is super long but I'm just so excited to get some pro advice. :)

I wish I could tell you we are finished building our house but we haven't even started. We still plan on going with the Nano Doors. Our builder has not heard of or worked with La Cantina and we can't get a response from them either so we crossed them off our list. Nano doors are expensive but they completetly make a statement or give you this amazing open feeling. With the amount of money we are spending on building a new house, the price of a Nano wall/door is practically nothing and totally worth the money, to us.. So we decided to have that be the one thing we were not going to compromise on. I'll keeo you updated if you're interested. We are finally through permitting and will break ground in a few weeks.

Hi, i installed the closer in the outer glass exterior door. What i notice is , when the inner wooden exterior door is kept open, and i close this outer glass door , the door closes slowly but when it is closed around 80% , it abruptly closes for the rest of the space , sort of hitting with a bang. Is that normal? i did notice that turning the screw in the first picture clockwise, makes the door close slowly , but that effect is only limited to the first 80% of the door close activity. The door closes for the last 20% of the space abruptly regardless of the setting of this screw. Below are the pictures after the installation. Thanks.

Pemko will not have door bottoms or sweeps for residential steel doors. Do you happen to know the brand name of the steel door as they all are different. Maybe post a picture of the sweep or how it mounts to the door. Or as handymac states change out the sill and use a different type of sweep that will work with the new saddle.

Here is a picture of the door bottom. The closest corners are bent down from wear and tear... but you can kind of make out how it fits into the door by looking at the left (outside edge).

I can't figure out the door manufacturer. This is the only thing I can find on the door. Does this tell me anything that would point to the manufacturer?

" millworkman" The difference between door hardware for a residential door and an aluminum, steel, fiberglass or wood commercial door is the method of attachment and in the 35+ years I've been doing this I have never had a problem with application.
It would appear that you have a couple of choices; Remove the existing door bottom, measure the distance between the threshold and door to determine if there will be enough adjustment, and install a combination door bottom and drip cap.
These are available in two configurations, either full wrap around or universal.
Free floating these are 5/8 of an thick.
If you find it necessary to use a threshold to makeup some of the distance.These are available in several widths as well, from dead flat to "high rug."
Some of the products I've mentioned may not be readily available from your big box's, however they can be ordered.

Or you can call this company and purchse this type of door sweep. It attaches to the face of the door with screws and basically will replace what you have now. This is why I was asking the brand but I have sold this particular type of sweep many times over as a replacement for the slide on or bottom attached sweeps. They were originally made by Benchmark for their residential doors but will work on any type of wood, , metal or fiberglass door.

That Benchmark door sweep looks like what I need on a leaking garage man-door. Does the vertical flange go on the interior or exterior of a door that opens 'in'?

It would screw to the face of the exterior of the door. The holes are predrilled as slots so there is some adjust-ability.

Hi...I think you should go for installing a new threshold. It will help you to solve your problem. By the way, the best option is to all a professional as it reduces the chance of re-occurring the problem.
