Is it a crazy idea to offer helping to fix neighbors house?

We have been thinking about attempting to sell our house to move into a slightly smaller home in a different area. We live in a nice area, but it is about two blocks in from the dividing line where it becomes primarily a student rental area. It's generally a pretty nice area, but I've watched the rentals declining quite a bit over the last year or so with pretty much zero attention from the landlords - most certainly due in large part to current economic conditions. The house right across from us in particular can be seen falling apart. The problem is the house is a notable eyesore due to the fact that is RIGHT in your face as you walk out the front door and the psychological impact is pretty signficant. With a bare minimum of attention, it could be given a drastic facelift. I have actually gotten the somewhat wacko idea to offer paying for 50-60% of a minor house facelift as I think it could actually pay off and could really effect a prospective buyers impresssion. Basically, the decrepit shutters on the windows just need to be taken off and discarded, the front door and window frames need to be scraped and painted and a little siding cleaning is in order. Maybe the brick facade could be sandblasted, or whatever they do to clean that. There is a handyman I work with that works quickly, and I could have him work a half day over there when he is at my house doing some work. The investment on my part would probably only be a few hundred bucks. Is this an inadvisable thing to even consider? The idea does seem kind of silly on one hand, but I have started actually considering this with some seriousness.

Are you on speaking terms with the owner? Do you think you still will be on speaking terms after you infer that he's a slumlord? Do you care if it creates a hostile relationship and still nothing gets done? If you are willing to take a big $$ cut to get away from the neighborhood no matter what, and don't care about maintaining any relationships with the guy, then you don't have anything to lose. He might take you up on some free work for the house. Or he might get pissed and actively make it worse. So, if you aren't willing to take the price drop to sell regardless of if the house across the street looks like a crack house or a mansion, tread very very lightly here. You may end up with a hostile relationship and having to stay there.

I see your point---might actually make you money on your house. I'd ask an experienced realtor or agent---but it will need to be a person with different than normal ideas on selling.

First, you have to get the owner's permission---and it would be smart to have a contract.

Then you need to make sure permits are required or not. That might require the HO getting those, since I have no idea if a non business/associated person could pull such a permit.

Then there is liability and access.

Might work, but also might not.

Thank you, thank you, everyone. What great suggestions that really help us to narrow our focus - it's a daunting move to completely change a house color, but I've never been a fan of the current color. A few more pics below ... dianalo - I love your suggestion of green as a third color, particularly because it's my favorite color. blfenton - I'm all for the lazy solution. ;) I thought I'd better post here to the wise ones first in case our local paint dealers are not as creative. adriennemb - We are very inspired by nature around here. Here's a photo of our views - excuse the excavator ... DH was installing a septic system for a neighbor. :) Your idea of a deep red would truly work - our neighbor is called Red Rock Valley. From House Exterior teacats - Yes, right now the house definitely blends. Before we changed the roof, it was tan and you couldn't even see a house on Google Earth. We're cautious about competing with nature, maybe don't want to blend as much. The trim color right now is actually dark olive, and I like it very much. We also will be replacing the lights - I like the idea of heavy black lanterns. As for the porch railings, I'd love to replace them with black iron (I can't stand those pickets!), so painting them black in the meantime would really be a good solution. And I also love your idea of the pergola - we are SO open to ideas. abundantblessings - The side storage you see is sort of a "bike port" - no doors, but DH is going to finish the interior so it looks nicer. Ah, the front door challenge. We tell people we don't have a front door - we've had delivery people circle the entire house. Because there IS no door by that yellow rocker. You drive up to the garage, and have to know to walk to the left, around the corner, down the walkway .... there WAS a door by the yellow rocker, but you would walk into a large closet in my kids' rec room. normally I say wait and paint till you've lived in a place awhile BUT this place is an exception to that. I'd paint all the walls and ceilings in the interior the same color except the kitchen. I'd leave that till after I got everything else painted, live with it for a bit and then reevaluate at that time. There are certain interiors that need one color used thru out. This may very well be one of them. HOWEVER depending on the color you choose that green in the kitchen might be okay as the one room you do different. The color you place on the other walls and on the ceiling is going to change how that kitchen color looks which is why I'd do all the rest of it first. Live with it a bit and then decide if the kitchen needs to be painted too.

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions! HU... I plan on a maple tree on the right and dug the hole for it so that the neighbor had a chance to complain about it before I spend money. We shall see! And I have been looking for furniture. Picky me can’t find what I like! Shivece .... great idea! I had also though about that but the winds off the lake are incredible and not sure a trellis could withstand them 😕 Sarah... the documentation is very long... started out with us having a ladder sitting in the side of our garage.... then over a peony and spiraled from there. We got a survey after the flower incident and he went crazy over that! Strung a line, pained orange markers everywhere.... we are legally allowed to have anything we want. But are kind of afraid 😱 I am thinking about a hedge though. I just worry he will kill them... Garden gal... no legal reason I can’t put up a fence. His issue is he only has about 6 inches past his heat pump to bring things to his backyard without coming on ours. I thought fences make good neighbors but can’t with this one. When the fence guy was here he yelled at us in front of him saying “you are going to regret this you mother f’rs”. And went absolutely berserk for 5 hours... And mind you he is 70 years old. Kitasei .. all true about the other kinda of neighbors. We are a small cove, 11 houses. They all know they are crazy but at least he tolerates them. We are the new people... the other neighbors love us and know what they have been doing and hate the war. One who is a judge even tried to mediate the situation but the neighbor would have no part of a mediation when we were more then willing to try. Rachel.... we looked into that but it would require a permit and variance which he would likely fight with the town 😕 Joseph... thank you! Looking into that. Embothrium... you hit the nail on the head. Anything we do is going to bother him. The cops had been called by others in the past but nothing changed. The neighbor who tried to mediate told him he will be the one who ends up with endless lawyer bills and fines if he doesn’t stop his crap. He hasn’t been violent since last year but the staring, giving the finger to our camera everytime he walks by, driving very fast by the house etc etc... is almost as bad. So that’s the situation.. This house was a 100 year old uninsulated shack when we bought it. We have had a lot of construction going on the past 5 years but only to make it better and will definite increase the property values. Thank you again for all of your response! Have a great Tuesday.

This would probably place me firmly under the heading of "odd" myself, but I don't see selling a home as being just "a business transaction". Granted, we've only owned one primary residence and it's been in a well-established urban neighbourhood where community is very important. We see our home and community as family (I'm veering more and more towards the indigenous custom of assigning personal pronouns to things we would call "it" in English). When we bought our home, the POs said that they chose us because we were expecting our first baby and wanted to make it our home (the house had been in their family for 60 years). I feel like if we ever sell, we'd have to continue this responsibility. We had neighbours who sold to someone out of province who they knew were going to use it for short term rental. Unknown to the new out-of-town owners it was turned into a rooming house. Drug addicts moved in and we spent two years fighting to get them out. Our block went from being filled with kids playing on sidewalks, to having to sweep up broken glass on sidewalks and not letting teenage DDs out alone. I feel like the neighbours who sold got top dollar because of what we had created as a community, and therefore had some responsibility in making that "business" decision. They had also benefitted from that community when they raised their children here and since they also had a home-based daycare, their livelihood had also come from having a stable neighbourhood. Sorry, veering into soapbox territory here. In my old age, I'm feeling less and less aligned with the culture of "business".

Thanks for the input. I do realize that I would have to tread lightly and I don't want to infer that he is a slumlord or even overly negligent. Quite frankly, I wouldn't expect him to do much other than keep it up to code and livable, which it most likely is. It's actually not quite "falling apart" but has crossed the line into being severely drab and depressing. It's just frustrating to think how just a little bit of attention could go a very long way. I think I could be pretty diplomatic and convey it in a way that assures him I am not implying or expecting anything. Hard to say how it would go...something that I'll have to think about a bit.

you are selling and leaving. I can't see anything wrong with telling the owner that his house looks tired. Personally, I'd welcome anyone that wanted to improve my rental property for free. Just don't expect him to kick in. You can offer and ask him to contribute, but if declines either offer to pay for it all or let it go.
I know people are often jerks, but I can't see anyone intentionally making their own property look worse just to irk a neightbor. That's just plain foolish. Not that there aren't a lot of fools around.

FWIW people on this board are WAY to quick to start talking liability.

Is the house a rental or does the homeowner live there?

I see nothing wrong with making the offer. As I read your post I thought of my DM's elderly friends who no longer have family to help them with upkeep of their home nor do they have the funds to pay someone to do the work.
In today's world there are too many people suffering from the economic crisis and I would be very surprised if such an offer were turned down.

If you think this is someone who may be a little sensitive about accepting help, then ask them to take part in whatever way they can.
