craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener mystery

I have a opener about 6 years old, mod# 139.53995SRT. For the past month here is what's happening. First, with door not in use, the lights will blink on and off for a long period of time. Second and most frustrating is this. When you try to OPEN or CLOSE the door with either remote, (I have three)or the keyless pad, or even the main pad this is what happens. The door will move a inch or so. It then stops, and I hear it reset in about 10 seconds. A press again of any controller will do the same thing. The only thing I noticed is that the little green light on the main controller is blinking rapidly during those 10 seconds while it resets. I called craftsman and got the run around with no help at all. This problem doesn't happen every time either, it might happen once a day, or 10 times a day, sometimes it doesn't happen for a couple of days.

Can anybody help me solve these mysteries?

PS. the sensor lights are both lit, and never blink.

The rapid flashing of that light usually indicates it is receiving a signal of some kind not necessarily connected to a door opener. Have you added anything new to your garage or home that plugs in? Even something as strange as a fish tank heater can cause interference. Do you have an old door opener remote laying around that isn't used? When something interferes it can block the receiver so your normal remotes won't work. This is what sounds like and you are going to have to do some sleuthing.

chicat2001 - You will find a button (smart/learn) just to the left of where all those white wires go. Press and hold it for 6 seconds. This will erase the memory in the opener and your remote should no longer work. Now press and hold the large button on your remote and then press and immediately release the smart/learn button. Your unit is now reprogrammed. jbenford - Check for a broken spring on your door or remove the cover of the opener and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor.

If it is stuck in the open position you will most likely find the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. You will need to loosen the chain enough to release the tension and then run the opener until the door closes. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

If tapping on the unit restores function the first thing I would look for is a loose connection. BTW, Chamberlain makes most, if not all, of Craftsman openers.

'96 Craftsman 139 53648SRT model 1) problems closing....go down a lil a come back up. RPM sensor I suspect ??? 2) LED flashing 5 times.....RPM sensor ? 3) while researching above problems...now when the remote or wall unit (no pad) is engaged, there is nothing but a slight/quick "humming" noise..and nothing happens. This is a new symptom. 4) I have checked/tired to align the infra red sensors.... this model has both lights on constant, regardless of whether they are in sync or not. I checked the wiring from teh sensors back to the motor/unit. I'm not sure how to align them now. QUESTIONS: which do I address first ? I'm not sure I can align the infra red sensors without the "humming" and no activity when I engage the opener. Should I look at the RPM sensor first ? Is the gear stripped ??? causing the humming and non activity ? The opener was opening before I started working on it. Thanks to anyone and everyone who has advice on this.
