Is brown too dreary for this small room?
Comments (7)Thanks for the pic cathrugg, brown looks great in your room. And brutuses, I have tried the background color, it appears washed out. Maybe because the walls going into the room are that color? This is why I want to find something unexpected....See MoreMy overly brown dining room needs paint color help
Comments (17)I just wanted to update with a few pictures of my dining room. I did go with Woodlawn Blue, and I love it! In low light situations (most of the day), it is a quiet gray blue that still livens up the room: In evening and early morning it goes much greener: It is NEVER baby blue, thank goodness. The chair rail and white portion of the wall are Chantilly Lace, which I chose because it kept its crisp whiteness even in the shadowiest times of day. (And... I liked the name.) BUT it doesn't match the trim at all. I will repaint it to match but couldn't quite face the task of doing it once I was done with this project! (You can see here how the original trim color looks dingy next to the Chantilly Lace.) I can see now a dark blue gray would have been a big mistake! Also, when I looked at pictures online of Woodlawn Blue I really disliked it, but it seems completely different in my space. Thanks again for all your help!...See MoreNEW house help! How can I update/ modernize paint with Brown carpet
Comments (20)for sure paint the ceiling white. just use the white base straight out of the can. don't have it tinted! use a flat, ceiling white. painting the ceiling will have a huge impact on the reflective quality. if doing white on the walls, it's really going to make the trim look dingy. I'd redo all the trim (do a little at a time) and the ceiling, and reevaluate the wall color. if you still think it's too dark, try BM Pale Oak...See MoreI'm stupid, need color suggestions for living room light sage, browns?
Comments (6)Not stupid. Picking paint colors is always hard, and some rooms are just particularly challenging. I've seen a lot of rooms on this board, and believe me that your room qualifies as particularly challenging. Before you tackle paint, you should improve your lighting, since it can make all the difference in choosing colors. The room IS dark (look at the difference between your photos and the realtor's professionally lit photos!), and if you aren't getting light from outside, you need to compensate with more, better interior light. I don't see any floor or table lamps in your furnishings; that's one place to start. Are the foyer pendant, ceiling fan, and dining fixture the only ceiling lights in the room? Any recessed cans? I would start with brighter LEDs in all the ceiling fixtures, and maybe tweak the color temperature (though I think your problem is more that you don't have enough lumens than about color temperature). Can you address the carpet on the stairs without tackling the carpet in the upstairs? I was just looking at DIY stair carpet removal and refresh with paint. It's a lot of work. (https://www.remodelaholic.com/under-100-carpeted-stair-to-wooden-tread-makeover-diy/). I wouldn't paint the wood trim. My sympathies on your divorce. Regardless of the circumstances, the process is difficult and disruptive and expensive....See MoreRelated Professionals
