Off topic good news to share

Our family added baby #4 on Monday, June 3.

We had a boy, Zachary. 9lbs 15oz, 21-3/4ins long. Things got complicated in delivery due to his size, got a little scary. His left arm was broken in the effort to get him out, between the shoulder and elbow. But it could have been worse than a broken arm, so we are very thankful he is happy, healthy and beautiful.

Big brothers and sisters are madly in love with him already. It's awkard to deal with the arm, but otherwise things are good.

But that is why you might not see much of me for a while!

Great... Good news. Keep us informed. I feel you will. Take care. Children are one of God's greatest gifts...along with those gifts comes those responsibilities. (love, care, etc.) Mothers are just real important and so are dads...

GGG -- That's a really good idea! I have a notebook with those plastic, looseleaf sheets for organizing 3x5 or 4x6 photos. They are about the right size for storing plant tags. (Although Monrovia ones have to be cut off at the bottom a little to fit.) If I get a lousy tag with very little detail from wherever, I still put it in there (so I can remember where I bought the plant), but I try to go online and print out whatever details I find there. Then, I fold it and put it behind the tag in the plastic sheet. It's not very pretty, but for most of the plants in my yard, I have some info. I also have a section for fertilizers I've used in the past. It is hard to remember the formula I like for a particular kind of plant (and I can never remember which number of the three is which). Walter Reeves has some kind of Saturday Night Fever dance that he uses to show people how to remember the numbers, but I still can't recall it when I need to! :)

I have had excellent mousers of both genders. My advice would be that you go to a local animal shelter or humane society, and tell them that you would like to adopt a semi-feral cat. A semi-feral cat will be used to being an outdoor cat, and also used to hunting for a large proportion of their own food. My current feral cat is a 14 pound tuxedo named Charlie, and although he's rather wary of most strangers, he greets me every morning and evening and demands a good petting. Also follows me around the garden, lets the dogs tease him gently, and he is death on vermin. He always leaves his prey on the main pathway to the house, so I get to see his trophies. Then after 24 hours, he eats them, so apparently he prefers his meat slightly aged. About once every 2-3 years, he will kill a bird and leave it on the path. I scold him firmly for this, grab him by the scruff and show him the bird and tell him "NO" and "BAD CAT" with a finger shaken in his face, then put the poor bird in the trash can so he can't eat it. He will then ignore birds for a couple of years. In addition to voles, Charlie has cleared out the local chipmunks, field mice, deer mice, wood rats, ground squirrels, and he even catches adult rabbits. Also the occasional squirrel. But he never goes more than about 40 feet from the house, so the wildlife on the rest of the acreage is safe. He ignores snakes and other reptiles and amphibians. I feed him twice a day, more food in the winter than in the summer, and he is allowed in the house whenever he wants to be there, which is rarely and briefly. He comes when he's called, will jump up on the hood of the car for his petting, and allows himself to be held very briefly. But he's definitely not a lap cat. Had Charlie not found a home like mine, he would have been euthanized, so by getting a feral or semi-feral cat, you are also saving it's life.

Hi Pagan, I'm glad you mentioned they're edible. I will have to try putting the petals in salad. It will certainly make an interesting presentation! I use the petals to make hot or iced Agua di Jamaica tea with fresh ginger, lemon, orange blossoms, splenda, and a dash of vanilla ... or any combination thereof. Just boil water, remove from heat, add ingredients to your liking (I use the petals of 10 flowers), cover, and allow to steep 20 mins. The Hibiscus initially turns the water very dark purple. When you add the lemon it turns very bright red. When heated, the petals have the consistency of aloe. This is actually a refreshing health drink in the Caribbean. Prepackaged hibiscus tea bags can be used instead. There are a few recipes online. The petals with cinnamon lowers blood pressure.

I've been wondering about that baby! I'm glad he's here, and you are both safe (though scarred, perhaps).

Woo Hoo a new baby. I hope he heals up quickly. Thankfully it is only a broken arm. As you said it could have been worse.

BTW-I have a Zachary. I hope your Zachary is as sweet and loving as mine.

Sorry, I've been reading without doing much posting lately, arms full.

My little guy will be one month tomorrow. He is doing great. The splint/cast sort of thing (the doc's original creation for the situation) was taken off last Thursday. He squirmed out of it twice and had to have a new ones put on! (We've nicknamed him Houdidi.) But now it's off for good. The arm is working great. We were waiting to be sure there was no nerve damage, and there doesn't seem to be, his little fingers wiggle all over the place. There is a lump of bone growth over the place where it was broken making it just a little bigger around than the other arm (like he's been working on the bicep). The bones are not exactly aligned, because it isn't practical to surgically put them back together in a newborn. If you know the arm was broken and *look* for a difference, you can see it. But it's not real obvious and it's only cosmetic, the arm works just like the other one. The doctor says that as he is growing quickly at this age, the arm will "remold" itself so that a year from now there will be no difference.

We still have another check up on it in a couple weeks, but it looks like all's well that ends well. The medical term for the complication we experienced is shoulder dystocia, head delivers normally but the shoulders get stuck, could have been a lot worse, so we are so relieved all is well now. Thank you for thinking of us!
