Help! Need roofing advice

A storm recently came through our area, and now I have to have my roof replaced. I currently have 25-year shingles on my roof, but I am looking at all my options.

I have heard that the color of shingles affects the temperature of the house. I have also heard that that is a myth. Can anyone weigh in on this from personal experience?

I am also looking at putting a thermal pvc roof system on the house, but I can't find anyone who has any unbiased information on this roofing system, either.

And of course there is always the metal-roof option. I have talked to my insurance agent, and as long as the roof is a class 4 roof, I will receive a 27% discount on my insurance premium, but I need to know if that discount will actually pay for the roofing if there is any issues with a metal roof.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I went from a neutral color asphalt, kind of mostly light brown granules but some dark brown in it too - To a White granule energy rated asphalt.
HUGE difference on winter electric bills ! They jumped up a bunch but summer cooling costs certainly went down a respectable amount.

Moderate color metal roofs now can be had with infrared reflecting paint pigments in formulas that dissipate heat rapidly too. But I imagine the lighter the better still. Recently read they are still trying to get the black pigments even to do that too. Carbon black is used a lot in paints and adds heat. Titanium in paints sheds heat quickly.

First off, if the roof is snow-covered, how can it be inspected properly? We've lived in a house that had a clay tile roof. Our roof sprung 1 leak and we were able to repair a 6 ft x 6 ft area very successfully. You can work on them in small sections. Clay tile roofs should NEVER be worked on by someone who isn't a specialist in them. You should never remove clay tiles, which are held in place by nails, and reinstall tiles by punching new nail holes in the roof....the old nail holes are the spots for new leaks. Ludowici in Ohio makes new clay tiles, but since you are in the UK, you probably don't care about that. You need a tile roof specialist. I would not rely AT ALL on what that inspection report says - tile roofs are special and need experienced people working on them.

Please help! Advice needed on flooring for covered deck/roof.

You need to seal the deck to the weather before you put a deck on top. Call a roofer first. Explain to him the plan and he will put down an appropriate material. Probably a membrane material. Then call in the deck guy. But make sure he does not sink any nails or screws into the roof. Ron

Update: The GC tore out all the dry wall in the old part of the house. There was mold already growing so they sprayed the walls with...something, I don't know what. They're also going to replace all the wood flooring that can't be fixed. And as an added bonus we were able to put up insulation in the old part of the house, which had fallen by the wayside with all the other cost overruns. So all in all I think it will be O.K. Thanks for all the great advice, this site/forum is the best!

My conclusion is that besides roofing material, roofing is only as good as installers installing it. To answer your question we had Cambridge AR dual black installed on our home currently under construction and extremely pleased with the end result. Because of the huge roof and valleys, I paid extra for 24" wide metal flashing for valleys since I was not taking chances on leaks; most would opt for a weave in the valleys. Looks: It looks awesome (well to us any way) and others who've looked at it. Though there are numerous pictures on my build thread, below are a couple where you can see flashing too. Enough to convince you it's a good product.
