Does everyone remember the money saving threads about strange or unconventional things people do to make and save money? I've got a new one.

To save money on babysitting, enroll your child in vacation bible school at every church in town. If you're lucky, the churches will stagger their weeks such that there is a VBS every week. You get bonus points if you're the paid babysitter and you drop off all of your kids so you have free time during the day.

If we're talking saving money - which we are - that seems to be an idea that some might choose to consider.

But it seems to me that some of the ideas that I hear in various churches seem quite bizarre - not the kind of stuff with which I'd want my kid's sponge of a brain to become indoctrinated.

While I don't like the ideas promulgated by some of the fundamentalist Islamists, I don't care for some of the ideas that fundamentalist Christians espouse, either. They claim to be so absolutely right about everything! Or their methods.

Remember the recent story about the folks picketing the funeral in a small town in Iowa of a family's son who'd been killed in Iraq, and a younger one about to be posted to Iraq and killed on the highway, in what seemed a suicide? The picketers saying that such results were God's punishment on us for support of gay rights, abortion, etc.?

Not my idea of basic Christianity.

Normally if I disagree with a poster I'll just scroll down, but I have to respond on this one.

Unfortunately the practice of using VBS as a babysitting service is becoming more and more common. My children have always attended the one week VBS at our church - but we are members of the church. I appreciate that the program gives the church an opportunity to teach Christianity to children but it bothers me that people take advantage of the program and use it for free child care - going to a different VBS program every week of the summer. Free babysitting is not the purpose of the program.

To follow up on Joyful's post, you (the OP) didn't mention if the programs you enroll the kids in are all from the same denomination - otherwise wouldn't you worry that they get conflicting doctrine? Or does doctrine matter as much as the free child care?

Don't you feel guilty taking money to babysit children and then dropping them off for the church to babysit them for for free? It's one thing to bring the children under your care to attend a one week VBS program at your home church, but to cart kids to every church in town - that's another story. Don't the parents of these children care that this is going on?

We looked for four years until we found a piece of land that met our requirements and we could afford. We bought it in August using a home equity line of credit. Its 1.5 acres (4 lots in a 1950s plan that was never built) and we plan to split it with my sister and build two homes eventually. The primary thing holding us up is the fact that a sewage line is going under construction this year or next and it would be foolish to build before sewage was available. Also we need to pay off our half of the land and transfer the other half to my sister before we can move forward. Both of those factors puts us with an earliest build time of 2011. I find that no one wants to talk to us until were more sure about when we can build, and that is making it hard for me to get a firm idea of how much it might cost us to build. That said, my plans have been evolving as I try to get a handle on building cost. We did meet with a builder a year ago (before we bought the land) to try and get a ballpark idea. Based on that meeting, coupled with reading this forum and the house tours weve gone on since then, we have totally revamped our plans/expectations to try and make them as cost effective as possible. My husband got me Better Homes and Gardens home designing software, which has been really helpful. I started with the footprint and basic layout of a typical production builder home in this area figuring it must be cost effective for them to be using it, then modified it to our needs. Im happy with the results, but my husband tends to be a little unrealistic, wanting things and design elements that I dont think we can afford. I have an education in and inclination for art and design. Like you, Redloger, Ive spent years looking through magazines and also taking books out of the library and scanning pictures I like. Ive actually made poster boards for each room so that I can look at all my idea pictures together. My husband and I just got into a semi-argument about the whole thing last night. If we argue about pictures, I imagine trying to really do the whole project must be really difficult. Hes feels like well never be able to afford it (or what he really wants anyway) and therefore doesnt want to seriously consider the design. Hes not a numbers person or a plan ahead kind of person. I want to work on the project ahead of time like you, Loralee, and try to get a firm handle on the design and cost so that we can work to make it a reality. So I feel that his ideas tend to be out of touch with reality and he feels like Im not interested in his input. He doesn't want to pick anything, but because he can be opinionated about things, I dont want to pick out too much without his input only to find hes going to veto it down the road. He seems to think it will be easy to make all these decisions while the actual build is going on, but I think good design takes time and planning. The thing is that we really like the same style and basically agree about materials etc, but somehow it is always contentious when we talk about it. The other thing complicating this whole mess is the fact that we have some skills from working on our rental properties and remodeling our home. Wed like to put those skills to use to save us some money. My husband wants to take on the whole thing, just get the house built to drywall and finish everything ourselves. But with 2 full time jobs and young children, again I dont think thats realistic. Im trying to figure out what projects would be the most realistic for us to tackle ourselves. Im thinking the painting and staining and tiling. Then down the road after were already in the house and as we can afford it, finishing the basement and installing all the bonus cabinets and built ins in the mudroom, craftroom, family room etc. But I don't know if that's too much, too little, or if it would save us significant money anyway. So, considering all that, I have a few more questions. I know that a house cant be built from what I have designed on BHG, so where do I go to get working blueprints drawn? Some builders I talked to seem to work with certain designers, so when the time comes should I just take my sketch ups to builders for estimates or would it make more sense to get final blueprints first? Second, cost is often estimated on square foot, but what is considered in that square footage? The software says my plan is about 2500-2700 square feet, but the house that I started with which has the exact same footprint is quoted as only about 2100. How could there be such a big difference? And if Im also planning a 3 car garage, front and back porches, would that be figured into the square foot estimate? If not, how much does that add to the overall cost? Thanks for all your help. (And charliedawg, your situation sounds like exactly what we would do except for the fact that houses dont increase in value that much here and never did even during the boom years. So even having lived there for 5 years, if we sold our house and paid off our first mortgage, wed only net $20,000 if everything went perfectly. Certainly not enough to pay off the land, get 20% equity and a $20,000 cushion. It sounds like you did very well.)

There might be additional venues besides the local newspaper, but I think you idea is a very good one. Here's why. We lived in a suburb of detroit where everyone was staying put because they didn't want to lose their shirts. We had been planning on moving for several years and did not want to let the economy stop us. The only homes that were selling were going very low, but because there were so few homes on the market, we were able to sell at smaller loss than we thought we'd have to. (We bought in 2006. Most of the neighbors bought long before that and have stayed put a very, very long time. So couple of things. 1. In an established, stable neighborhood people who have been in there homes for 15 years or more and have few comps to refer to have no idea what to ask for their homes. YOur number might suit them just fine. They might be sitting there thinking "I'd love to move" and have no idea what they could get, or believe that they'd have to remodel the kitchen or whatever before they could get out without taking a licking. (Some of those tv shows are really warped.) These people might see your number and think "Freedom!". 2. After we sold in under a month I noticed two things: The only other neighbor whose house was listed had been listed too high and too long and was dropping slowly. Once he saw our deal he dropped his price immediately by a substantial amount and it will now sell. My point? We all know about people who think there house is worth more than it is, because they put in on the MLS. But there are lots of people who don't know the value of their homes, or think their homes are worth less, and these people might respond to you, and there's no guarantee that they'll all have doghouses. YOu could get a good one. Another neighbor put his house on the market. I'm certain that he was thinking, as we had been, that the hit he'd have to take was larger than it really had to be. It was a very, very nice house. People like that neighbor and me, highly mobile individuals who seek stable neighborhoods but leave them more often than others do, would be very receptive to your idea. I wish I had seen your ad! I could have saved the realtor commission. In a money-losing situation like I was in, it would have been nice to lose less. Just so you know what type of neighborhood I'm talking about: Built in the early 70's, all the homes kept up, remodeled, updated, very leafy, long tenure, A-rated schools, selling no more than 420k in 2005/6, selling for 15 to 20% less now, very few sales since 2007.

Tracy - If you've never actually been abused, it's hard to see how it can happen to a strong, capable and emotionally healthy person. And when you see abused women rationalizing and excusing their abuser's behavior, blaming themselves, and walking on eggshells -- I admit -- there's a repulsiveness to this behavior. There's a part of us that wants to just slap them upside the head to clear their vision, and the temptation to blame them for allowing it to happen is strong. I mean - What self-respecting woman would put up with such garbage?! But abuse doesn't go from non-existent to full-blown. By the time the abuse is readily visible to any normal outsider, it has been building insidiously for years, and the victem's perspective has already been so skewed that she (or he) can no longer see things clearly. By the time the abuse is clear-cut, the self-respect of the person in question is already badly damaged, and they're questioning their perceptions. It starts as a little quirk, an indulgence or 'one time thing'. A request that's inappropriate but small (not worth arguing about), a comment that could be taken the wrong way (or did he mean it that way?), a slight, or a fleeting look of contempt. Things that in isolation, would and should be excused. But then they don't stay in isolation. Events get more slightly more frequent, less ambiguous, more insensitive -- but only slightly more offensive than the stuff we've already learned to tolerate. It's the proverbial frog in warm water situation; the water gets hotter and hotter, but still, the frog won't jump out. On the day of my first marriage, we left the reception and went back to Hubby's hotel. We had a few hours to pick up his luggage before heading to the airport to leave for our honeymoon. Only Hubby hadn't actually packed his suitcase, and he turned on the TV. My feelings were hurt, that Hubby's immediate post-wedding plans weren't of the 'rip her clothes off' variety, but what bride wants to spoil her wedding day by fighting with her brand new husband about when he should have packed his suitcase? Amaulden - I know you can't trust your own perceptions right now. You're wondering if it's really all that bad. After all, ALL of it isn't bad, and we've only heard one side of the story. But your friends, your parents, your children (if they're old enough) -- They may be able to see more clearly. No we don't all want that house. I mean, Everyone wants to buy a house for a low price ... and sell it for a high price ... and to own the least expensive house in an expensive neighborhood. Were people to demand more efficient houses, then the market would respond, but in reality, most people don't care. I think people want efficient houses ... but they find themselves caught up in finishes /can't see past finishes. A smaller house (which can be high end in all respects ... triple pane windows, high insulation, custom kitchen, hardwood floors, beautiful bathrooms, etc.) costs you less to operate in the long run. Let’s not forget about things like property taxes ... which are forever. A small house has cheaper taxes. Let’s talk heating/cooling ... a small house is cheaper to operate and who knows where these costs will go in the future. If you can keep the long term operational costs of your home down, it’s a good thing. A smaller house is easier to clean ... a consideration as you age. (We actually got rid of our cleaning service ... simply didn’t need it. We could do it ourselves.) I’m sure you’ve taken into consideration all of the aging in place things. But these are important. One can’t predict the future and one’s health and mobility. It’s not an issue for us, but we’ve watched friends sell their beloved homes that were simply not appropriate for older people (two stories, in particular.) We are amazed at how much we save per month simply by having a smaller house. I would much rather put this money into travel than extra square footage. Yes, these are all reasons we're building a small house. I'll add just one more, and it's a rather morbid reason: I'm younger and healthier than my husband. The reality is that I'll likely live in this house alone one day. I don't want to knock about alone in an oversized house. This is the exactly the sort of minutia that some consumers like to suggest to other consumers. It comes from reading a few book, a blog and maybe watching a video or two. It's also the kind of thing that causes your builder to add a P.I.A. charge on top of your bill. "I am more than capable of paying off my mortgage many times over if I ever decide to do so. lol. sure. I believe you. I believe it. Hang around here a while, and if you're doing more than throwing insults at people, you'll note consistencies (or inconsistencies) in people's comments. It's pretty easy to tell who's telling the truth. CPArtist is a solid poster ... not a liar or a braggart. ETA: @ D E, I don't care if you set your money on fire, it is your money, do whatever you want with it. However, I think you should refrain from making fun of people who chose not to set their money on fire. Agree. It definitely shows ignorance. I personally fall into the camp of "buy a modest house and pay it off", but I do understand the math behind the idea of keeping a mortgage /investing. I don't believe it's at all easy for a rank amateur to actually save money GCing their own build because the money saved in not paying a GC is likely to be eaten up by delays, mistakes and lack of access to trade discounts and quality subcontractors. Agree. No -- more than agree; that implies opinion. This is fact. A GC knows the ins-and-outs of building, has relationships with the best trades, and will be more efficient in the long run. That includes building for a lower price, especially when you consider that time is money.

This particular VBS takes children of any faith. I don't have a problem with that. It's interesting to learn about different faiths. I would think that these kids after attending one or two of these events especially after one or two with the same theme, the kids get tired of it. Thats when they start acting up and causing problems for others like these kids did. The babysitter lied about the age of a child who was too young to attend. The volunteers ended up having to devote a full time person to that child.

I'm am not the person who did this. I think it's wrong. The babysitter was getting paid to take care of those kids. My friend who got to "babysit" the kids got an earful on other ways the babysitter cheats the system like taking in too many kids and them sending them to the playground to play when the childcare inspection people showed up.

I just posted this story because the boards are slow and I remember the long threads we had about this type of stuff a couple of years back. The threads at that time were humorous. If we don't laugh at some of the stupid things people do, we'd cry all the time.

Anyway, this type of "free" babysitting doesn't just apply to VBS. It could apply to any type of summer program or unfortunate neighbor mom where mom, dad, or the babysitter wants to pawn off the kids for a while.

My "kids" having recently achieved the ripe old age of 40 ...

... the possibility of my bending their opinions, attitudes and emotions has become somewhat tenuous - though perhaps somewhat more possible than when they were teens!

On the other hand - the possibility of them telling me what to do at my ripe old age of 75+ becomes slightly improbable, as well.

But ... we were talking impressionable tots.

AdellaBedella - I'm so glad to hear that you were talking about someone else! I hope the parents of the children she's babysitting get wind of all of this so that they can speak up and put a stop to it!! I know women who do this so that they can spend the day shopping or having lunch with their friends, it just makes me mad!

I recently sent my kids to a day camp run by a local Christian school, and enjoyed the week, knowing they were having fun. It wasn't free like VBS, but it was so seriously cheap it might've been free - $65 for 2 kids, including a field trip to a pool that charges $5 each, including lunch and snacks too, 8:30 -5:00, all week! That is CHEAP. The next best day camp deal I've found was at the YMCA, where we pay membership dues and would still have to fork over $100 per kid per week, and pack their lunches.

I heard about it from a friend who was also sending her kids. But I did feel a bit ambivalent about sending mine, because this church/school is not MY particular doctrine - I'm not a fundamentalist/born-again, they are. But hey, I thought, it's only a week, what could it hurt? They went to chapel twice each day, learned Christian songs, and played some really weird games. :) They had a good time, but agreed some things were a bit odd to them (they're 7 and 9). As the OP said, it's interesting to learn about different faiths. I wonder if this isn't a ploy to lure them in (said in a playful tone)...but my kids are quite comfy with our own church.

Anyhow, obviously this is completely ethical, unlike the OP's acquaintance's activities. I guess I just had to confess. :)

I went to school in Topeka, KS with the Phelps' kids. The church group you mentioned in your post. Their church is primarily made up of their family. They were weird even 30 years ago. Just different targets.

They came up here to Anchorage a couple of years ago and it ended up being a non-issue. No one would give them the time of day.

Did your paper report how every time they started chanting the bagpipes would start up and drown them out?

I assumed you (AdelladeBella) were being facetious.

You know there are so many other issues going on in that family. To allow one's paid babysitter to send one's children into daycare/childcare/church situations that one hasn't screened and where one has NO IDEA of who is taking care of one's children should be criminal. Perhaps, or maybe obviously, those parents and that babysitter are not aware that pedophiles target church situations for the exact reason that everyone assumes "Oh, we are all nice Christians. We all love children. We don't do background checks of our workers."

There was a report about a church within the last month on one of the three major networks (I think it was a major national story) about the pastor and all of the elders sexually molesting the children, even the infants. They only caught them because the pastor went to the police and confessed.

I have worked in VBS as planner, director, games leader, etc. and my children are going to be safe and well-cared for as the first issue.

Boy, I now need to cool down. I feel sorry for those children, who don't seem to be very wanted by anyone, even the church. You know, I'm sure that it was a hard situation for the VBS staff, but truthfully, I think dying on a cross for all of the workers, and those unwanted kids, trumps that bad situation.

Church's aren't always the safe havens for our children that we may think they are.
This past week a pastor who has been in our town quite a few years was convicted of numerous counts of sexual abuse on young children over quite a long period.
Unfortunately,Yes....some of the incidents took place during VBS.
I realize that this is the exception to the rule,but parents should keep their eyes and ears open and watch for any strange behavior in their children.
In this day and age it's unfortunate that we have to think this way,but blind trust can have devastating results.
As we have seen recently with the BTK killer,being a member of a church doesn't automatically mean that person can be trusted.

My friend is divorced with one young son. She hated sharing custody with her ex. One summer she enrolled the boy in as many vacation bible school weeks as possible, then told her ex he should not take the kid during those weeks. It worked, but I think it was a little morally unquestionable.

I live in a very small town where during the summer young children are left to roam the streets while mom and dad work. My son is nine and many of these kids ended up at my house. They were basically camped out in my living room until I told them we were leaving and they had to go home. They told me that no one was home and they knew I was home and hoped they could stay here. How nice that they felt the need to look for a parent. Free babysitting did not happen here. I sent them on their way and told them they could come down only when their mom or dad was home. Heaven forbid if one of these children got hit by a car or fell and broke an arm. Where are people's brains?

WHY don't we adjust school hours to working hours? Kids start at eight or nine and go home at four or five? Especially adolescents -- who need more supervision than some little ones! They'd have fewer "latchkey" hours.
