This picture was taken before we purchased the home...although I can't say it looks *so* much better than this pic! We removed some landscaping (hedges and triple paln at front door) and we are in the process of putting in a circular driveway. I will be asking for help on driveway colors at a later date, if I can zero in on exterior paint colors.

This is the side of the house. We are going to extend that little deck off the french doors (that is the dining room there, some of you may remember my inherited spanish looking dining room set from 1970 and chandelier, and/or my cool flagstone floor) and probably put a pergola over it.

When we replace the awnings, we will NOT have the scalloped edges. You can see that weather makes them curl up and look awful.

I can't say that I would think of putting awnings on a house, but since the metal work is already in place, we figured we would replace the material. If anyone here HATES the awnings and can suggest something else to give some "interest" to the exterior, please tell me!

I think the colors you chose would look great with your roof and won't compete with the greenery. Go for it.

I like that color combination a lot! I've always like the artwork inside Bonefish as well. And the food!

Keep in mind, though, that the restaurant exterior is well appointed with wood trim, a stone column, lighting, sign, and the decorative fishbone. It all keeps the eye moving around. That's hard to pull off on a private residence.

Hmmm, do you think it will be ok in a more simple, residential application? There will be more landscaping when we are done, plus the awnings...

I do like that wood trim on the windows but I don't think we will be doing anything like that. I was hoping that just having landscaping on the lower 1/4 to 1/3 of the walls would help keep the eye moving.

I don't mind if anyone says it won't work, so don't be shy. Or, if anyone has a suggestion to help make it work, I'd love to hear it!

I mean...it *is* a 1970s "faux spanish" ranch house, ya know? Barrel tile roof and arched entrance...I cannot get away from it and have no problem working with it! Give me sugggestions.

natal-I hate to say it...but I kind of figure since someone else paid the $$ to get awnings, i might as well roll with it. Also, it does keep the house a bit cooler...we are obsessed with trying to keep our electric bills down! On the negative side, this house is fairly dark inside (8 ft ceilings, smaller windows) so it does contribute to the house being dark. But I guess that is your point about having overhang from the roof...that the awnings aren't really "doing" anything? There is not much overhang on the side, though, so I think the serve a purpose there, and I like the continuity of having them in the front. I just felt it would add some sort of detail/interest?

Ohhh, I am swooning over the copper awnings! The french doors on the side of the house...we really are thinking of a pergola to make it more of an outdoor "room." So that awning in particular would be gone, replaced with the pergola.

Yes, the awnings in the front are redundant with the roof overhang. How is the house situated? What directions do the front and the side with French doors face? If interior darkness is an issue, I would only use awnings on windows that aren't covered by the roof overhang.

go with the canvas ones, but that's me.
If you like the It's Complicated house
you just need to add vines and big scrubs
in giantic urns. Jasmine (winter and summer)
come to mind. Forget Wisteria and think cascading
figs, so beautiful.
You already have the house, and it's fabulous, it is.
The house in the movie is a 1920 spanish ranch so it has
more character, after all it has fifty years on yours.

house which would cost a fortune. So forget about that.
Think weathered everything and natural wicker furniture.
I would kill to own your house, I love it.

new dawn-that is a 3 stall barn...isn't it great? On the other side of it, there are grassy paddocks with shady trees. I have two miniature horses. I leave the stall doors open so the horses can go in and out at will. The barn has a fan system that I turn on every morning, plus a misting sysyem (which I don't use, really) to cool them off. Those horses have it made!

Thank you for the kind words about my house! I cannot express to you how much I *LOVE* my house. I have a "thing" for the 70s (that was the era when I was growing up, between the ages of 2 and 12) and I just have so many fond memories of our familý's ranch home that my dad built in 1967. I was raised on 5 acres, with horses, just outside of Miami. Our new home is a much more manageable 1 acre!

For some reason, I am not too keen on wicker...I think being in FL I just associate that with a "beachy" look? I do like those seagrass chairs that are popular now.

I really really want a creeping vine on the house...I even thought maybe just on the garage side and continuing to the arch only (you can see that my arch just our from the front of the house), but my DH, being "practical" and all...is worried about bugs. In SoFla, bugs are such a big issue, can't say I blame him.

natal-the front of the house faces east. The back faces west. So, ironically where we could really use awnings (my bedroom window and one of DD's bedroom windows) the previous homeowners did not put them!

The side of the house where we want to put the pergola, that side is south. Here is a picture of the southwest corner of the house. I pray to heaven above that I post correctly and I do not have oversized pics! Please excuse all the dirt, that is soil leftover from our circular driveway out front, that my DH is using to level the ground on the side of the house. It is very uneven and bumpy.

I would definitely remove the awnings on the front of the house and keep them on the side if they help there. I think the front looks a little funny with them peeking out from the roof overhang, but they look just fine on the side of the house.

For the french door area I might consider doing a pergola over the patio when you enlarge it and just don't spend the money on an awning there if those are immediate plans.

This is my friend's home, painted the Bonefish colors. What do you call those black ""shutter" things on the front. I like them...but I don't think they would go with my home. Tell me what you think.

natal-I just thought, for continuity's sake, I should have the awning on both the side and the front. The front faces the street, as does the south side of the house (where we agree the awnings should stay, and where I will probably put a pergola over the french doors.) So, as people drive to my house, they pass the south side of my house and turn left onto my street. It won't be odd to see awnings along the side of my house, then to turn the corner and see none?

Not natal - but I wouldn't consider it odd looking as the side of the house has a different shape than the front anyways.

If you do a pergola you'll be breaking up the view anyways.

When I look at the south side picture you linked I think the view of seeing the awnings peak out from under the roof looks more odd than if they weren't there.

BTW I forgot to comment on the color - I think it would work with your roof color if it has more of a green tint in it. I can't see your friends house unfortunately as the larger version is blocked for me right now and the little picture is too small for me to see.

dirtymartini...did you paint your house yet? Have you changed your mind about the bonefish colors? I'm currently in a home I'd have never chosen but I'm determined to bloom where I'm planted. It's very contemporary in style and is imposing on the lot. The roof is NOT neutral...it's that orangey-brown shingle color and I've tried to figure out exterior colors for over a year...and then...your post! I think I have a touch more brown in my shingles than in your roof...my roof color is more along the lines of the wood trim on the bonefish example you posted above and not as deep as the awning...but I still think the colors may work. I'd love to see your home finished. Please keep us posted.

Bonefish Mangrove looks an awful lot like SW's Universal Khaki to me. Trim SW Muslin. I don't get the 'coral' reference unless they mean like the color of a chunk of the decorative white coral that's popular now and not the color known as coral. ???? Or maybe I'm missing something.
