Wooden top on island

I'm hoping to get some opinions here. We're ready to do some updating in our kitchen. Originally we were going to put granite on the the counter tops and the island but now I'm starting to consider a solid wood for the island top. I'm wondering if anyone here did a wooden top on an island and regrets it??? Thanks for any help.

I did my entire perimeter counter in wood, and don't regret it. I also have an antique wood top table as an island, and love IT, too!!!

We did American cherry several years back and have no regrets. Do a search on "wood counters," "tung oil," and "waterlox" and you will find the motherlode of wood counter information.

Hi november- ...."I forget details like price..." Ha, ha! :-) Anyway...I asked this particular kitchen showroom for a quote b/c I had emailed Grothouse asking for a general estimate in maple, giving my sizes, etc. I got an email back saying they mostly deal with their kitchen showroom vendors, not individual customers so they referred me to the kitchen showroom that I contacted and gave me the $5000 estimate. Hmmm... About how long ago did you buy the top from Grothouse? My Dad and husband could definitely install. I even said in my email to grothouse that we could drive to PA and pick it up. I feel a bit "put off" by them - not sure if I should recontact them with the price given to me by the showroom and push it a bit more of forget it as they don't seem too eager for my business! Maybe I will post on here asking if others have recently dealt directly with Grothouse. Thanks for answering!

I agree with you, GreenDesigns, and I guess I should have started with the fact that my cooktop is already in my island, so I'm stuck with it. Believe me, I hate having the hood hanging down over the island, too, but if I move the cooktop to an outside wall for venting, then I have to move my sink and cabinets and the next thing you know I'm gutting the whole kitchen... Trying to stay within the budget (sigh). So given that this is the arrangement I have - any opinions about a cooktop and wood island? I have seen a few on the blogs... I'm going to try to post a picture here so you get some idea of what I'm dealing with... Nope, still can't figure out how to do this with a jpeg. I'll try to email it to you. trailrunner - I followed your instructions for posting a photo, but I don't have an htmp code beneath the picture, just a jpeg number... Help! TIA

I think I remember the post you are looking for. Although I could be wrong. Forgive me if I am terribly confused. It has been a while since I was on GW. I pop in and out when I have some free time. Here are some images I happen to have of wood counters. Maybe they can help you. I am certain two different woods will be lovely. Especially the wood on the floor and the wood on the counter. Could you alter the height of a portion of the countertop so that you'd have a reason to use two different pieces of stone? I ask because I am very short, and I would like to have a small lower island portion that'd be comfortable for me to knead bread, etc. I often walk over to my kitchen table to do these things just because it's a good 8-10 inches shorter. By the way, I understand where you're coming from about the KD. If you're going to fight your own battles, going to stress over the small stuff like this . . . then why are you paying her? Okay, the counter top isn't small stuff, but go with me here.

We did walnut on our island finished with Osmo top oil. I wanted a natural look that was repairable rather than the thick shiny (though waterproof) look of Waterlox. I love it! It looks beautiful and is highly repairable - scratches can be easily sanded off and re-oiled. Over the holidays someone made a huge circular scratch on the surface. But after sanding and oiling, you cannot even tell. You can see in the pic that I need to oil the one end which looks lighter, it's where we eat so gets scrubbed more than the rest.

We have antique pine on our island. 6.5 years and still love it. It is finished with Good Stuff for Wood.

We just installed wood counters at DD2s house yesterday. She is finishing them with organic BioShield #54 wood counter finish (linked below)

Breezygirl has a walnut island top as well . I love looking at the wood top islands but don't think dh would go for it and not sure it would 'fit' with the other elements we like. But every time I see one I just want to run my hand across it! I hope she doesn't mind that I link it.

sloane-love that edge on yours also.

They just look so rich and add so much classic warmth. :)

I have 2 1/4inch maple bb on my peninsula, rest is Danby marble.
Because I feel like I have to baby my marble (for right now), I love the fact that I have my bb. We really use/abuse the bb. I love it that I can do anything to it and if I ever find it too ratty-looking, I can sand it down and start all over again. change the stain, carve-it-up/vintage-it, or leave it pristene, etc.
It's like the paint color in my house: I can change it up anytime. Yes, not very easy-peasy, but very doable.
