Ottoman and coffee table...

It seems so difficult to have an ottoman and coffee table in the same room. They always try to occupy the same space and end up cluttering up the room and falling over them. What to do? When I come home from work, I like to put my feet up and the ottoman is very comfortable. I don't like putting my feet on the coffee table. Those ottoman/coffee table combo's are a probably in that you can't really put a glass (liquid) on them without worrying it will fall over. I could also go with a recliner or some sort of lazyboy but fewer choices in that furniture. What do you do with ottoman and/or coffee table?

Do you need the coffeetable? If you have end tables, you might try taking out the coffeetable and see how you do. We don't have coffeetables in either the family room or living room any more, and don't miss them.

You can put a tray on top of the ottoman to put glasses down on. I

I would prefer the smooth leather top for ease of care, although I like the "clubby" look of the tufted one. Tufted ottomans that are actually used (for feet and dogs in our house) get so much dust and stuff in the depressions around the buttons, they are difficult to clean. In decades of having houses looked after by two different housekeepers, their ONLY complaint was that tufted ottoman. We replaced it. I don't especially care for the combination of leather and zebra print. Either is great on its own, though.

Nice room. In your room, a rug is not "needed" to define the space; however, IF you notice scratches on the floor in front of seating, and if you cannot get your family members to wipe and/or remove their shoes as they enter your home, a rug could protect hardwood flooring. Personally, I much prefer bare hardwood floors, especially in a room with a fireplace that burns wood (even more so if the fireplace has an open firebox) because I consider rugs and carpet more of a fire risk.

Oakley, I love that but it is way to frou frou for my family room. I have a huge 10' long Belgian work table, a white duck sectional, and a distressed leather ottoman. I tried some new throw pillows (posted a while ago on this) but none were the right scale. Anyway, the colors I'm stuck with are more autumnal. (also as I posted above, I don't care for the look of those Society 6 trays from the side) I did buy two things! Thanks KSWL, they are both West Elm. A gold tray, at 18x28 one of the largest I've seen. I like that it is not a slick gold; hope it works. I also got a a candle (cannot pass up tortoise shell). I also like this bundle but am sure I can do it myself. Will also add a planter of some sort, some larger books, and something metal. On the balance of the ottoman I will stack books and magazines and a folded throw. Almost there!

I haven't missed my coffee table one bit since I bought an ottoman to use as one 12 years ago. I have a nice tray on top that can hold beverages if need be, but usually use an end table for that. You could use a coffee table book as a solid surface on the ottoman on which to place a cup if you didn't want to use a tray.

To me, coffee tables were for propping feet up anyway :-)

Geez, I really wanted to deepsix the coffee table but thought that it was one of those had to have pieces. Usually it just gets "stuff" piled on it, magazines, laptop, etc. Anyone else have both or let the coffee table go?

We always were putting our feet up on the coffee table and use the end table for drink glasses anyways, so I got a leather ottoman to replace the coffee table.

It so so much more comfy on the ankles than the hard wood of the old coffee table!

We have a leather ottoman bought at over stock dot com a few years ago. It's been great, and I don't miss having a "real" coffee table at all. Like some of the others, we use a tray for drinks.

I love our large cocktail ottoman. It measures 37 in. x 45 in. and is perfect for our sofa and loveseat. I bought it at Costco, and it even came with the wood tray.

I have a big ottoman instead of a coffee table. I love it. I have a tray for drinks and such.

We have a large coffee table, and a small half-round ottoman sitting right next to it. I thought I'd put my feet on the ottoman, but I still put my feet on the table!

I've seen some ottomans that have removable tops that can be flipped over and used as trays.

I saw a picture recently with an ottoman and a very small table in place of a coffee table. Since it was not your regulation size coffee table, there was room for both.

We recently ditched our coffee table and purchased this ottoman from Overstock. We love it and DO NOT miss the coffee table. My only complaint about the ottoman is that I wish it were a little bit bigger (it's 30x30).

I just found the coolest thing.

I have a really huge ottoman and wanted to add a serving tray to make it a coffee table/ottoman.

I started surfing, looking for a really big tray.

Finally I ran across a great tray at a great price.

I found this guy on ebay who makes custom trays any size. After seeing small trays all over the net at huge prices, I was thrilled when he promptly emailed me with a quote that super affordable.

I just thought maybe this could help someone else.

So I love my handmade ENORMOUS tray and my ottoman never looked better.

I replaced the coffee table with a large ottoman in the living room about 2 years ago when my son started to move around. It's great because I didn't have to worry about him bumping to the wood or glass of a coffee table.
