Thanks all for the Replies. I forgot to mention that this is my first year gardening, so I'm a bit on the beginner side. My first gardening area just turned out too small, then the second area wasn't enough. So I made a third, fourth and a fifth. I have crops all over the place (they do look great). That is why the fence idea was ruled out, just too much ground to cover. The other day, I caught him going into my shed. I closed the door on him and tried to figure out how I was going to remove him without having to kill it. Well, next thing I know, he somehow pushed the shed doors open (it was latched) and escaped. I have a burrow in my yard, I believe that the shed and my yard is their vacation home. Their place of residence is my neighbors yard. I could always lay stone all the way around my yard, but I would need a lot. (its at least close to 1000 feet of fence. I'm going to get a trap and trasfer them to a much nicer place far away from my garden.

I had a squirrel (?) crawl down a vent pipe in my bathroom and die a few years back. I ended up with a rain of maggots coming into the bathroom through the ventilation fan. I put a jar of alcohol up on a ladder to catch the maggots that fell and was able to "contain" the epidemic. Unfortunately, a few days after the maggots stopped, hundreds (maybe thousands) of big flies hatched out and from the carcass and came down through the vent. My bathroom looked like some scene out of a horror movie with big black flies EVERYWHERE! Fortunately, I had managed to keep the door closed and contained all the flies into that one room where I could spray insecticide and sweep up the dead bodies later. It wasn't a particularly good time though.

Re the holes in your lawn, how big are they? In my experience, squirrels don't make holes in the lawn.... my only plant damage from them is things like fruit theft and snipping off my tulip buds. :p. I've never had voles, but from what I've read I think they eat the roots of plants, not top growth. Lots of smaller holes in the lawn, along with dirt piles and ridges, is usually caused by moles.... but they wouldn't be eating/damaging your plants as described. If the holes are large, the problem could be groundhogs -- but you'd likely see them around. My sister has the occasional groundhog wander into her veg gardens and they steal/eat everything. eta, chipmunks will make holes in your lawn, but they don't do plant damage like you describe.
