Wasted show on Green planet

Has anybody wasted their time watching the show "Wasted" on the new Green planet network formerly Discovery home?

Some of the ideas may be good but one idea is pure stupidity.

Family lives in area where palm trees grow so most likely it is hot and temperate, right?

The suggestion for them to cut their meager heat bills for only a couple of months by use of a single radiator is to cut down the trees! I would think the people would want to plant as many trees as possible to shade the house in summer heat!!!!

Trees naturally cool and they do block radiant heat getting to windows in winter, but if you live in the Palm tree area of the globe who cares about a couple of months versus 9 months of 90-100+ degrees weather.

Without any comment relative to the validity or wisdom of this particular message ... it's through similar types of messages disseminated widely that people became more environmentally aware ... and concerned.

While there are still a number of persons/agencies who deny the validity of global warming and pollution (and many question the motivation of some of them), there are others who maintain that we may well be close to, or even past, the point of no return in terms of making the continued existence of mankind on this polluted planet possible.

While some term it the destruction of the planet, others say that it's not the total destruction of the planet ... just the continued existence of mankind, who require a very special set of environmental conditions.

Most likely a lot of the animals and birds (the ones with less strict environmental requirements), plus insects, plants, etc. would survive.

And probably be thankful (if animals, birds,etc. are capable of such anthropomorphic concepts) that man had disappeared ... for it gave them a much enhanced potential survival!

Thanks for the replies. I remember hearing something about some horse feed that has molasses in it. Right now, I feel like I am brain-dead from all of the heat. I hate being holed-up in the house and not be able to be outdoors. We have had sixteen days of this hot stuff and everything is withering away. On the other hand, after looking around and seeing many worse-off than I am, I feel guilty. Thanks again. Barb

I have an apple tree in front of our house. We have no idea how old it is or even what kind it is. We always thought it was a crab because the apples stay pretty small and they are usually green. Although my husband pruned it back A LOT Fall '08 and this past fall '09 the apples had a tint of red on them and they were a little bigger than the season before. The blossoms are usually white with a tint of light pink. The apples are usually dry and bitter but this year they were a little sweeter(I assume due to pruning). Does anyone have an idea of what it might be? I have been contemplating cutting it down and putting a prettier flowering tree or at least a better tasting apple there. This is the only pic I have of it and it is in the fall with no leaves before it was pruned. I thought it would give an idea of the habit.

Of course, being a good steward of our reasources, such as by planting grasses that need less water and fertilzer is good. But, if global warming is happening and threatening to push us in to a whole different kind of weather epoch, I sure wouldn't have any problem growing a lighter shade of grass to to try to help mother nature balance out the higher temps that may be resulting from all the greenhouse gasses our industrial age has been pumping in to the atmosphere. While day to day temps, even a whole season can't be taken as indicators of changes in world wide changes, I was working outside yesterday and had to come in and put on a short sleeved shirt because it was so hot. An unheard of thing in 30 years of living in Amarillo, Texas. Also, when things like sheet ice at the poles start disapperaing, as we can see and measure, it becomes a little more difficult to stick our heads in the sand and say nothing is happening. Now, I agree we may not know for sure, sure, that man is "causing" it. It could be part of mother nature's big long term cycles. But, even then, its probably best for us to do what we can to balance the climate out, say with little things that might add up, like more reflective grasses growing in millions of yards around the country. Science tells us it is a fact that "nature" led to periods of weather that had high temps and mega-droughts in the past. Weather patterns that were non-man made that helped kill off a majority of species in the past. Helping mother nature keep things balanced, regardless of the cause, might be a pretty wise investment for us to make in our own well being.

I'm glad people are happy with their seeds. We had thunderstorms in our neck of the woods yesterday. The storms didn't knock out my internet & phone, but my doggie doesn't handle storms well. She got up onto the table and knocked everything off of it including our server & wireless network. DH determined we now have a bad cable that needs to be replaced. On a positive note, last night DH & I picked up 2 shih tzu puppies! A boy & a girl. We still have to name them! We have them at work with us today.

Another message tonight was on our taste for cashmere wool relative to creation of dust bowls. They stated that our need for cashmere wool from sheep was causing more sheep. Therefore, more plants to be eaten by the sheep,therefore dust bowls are created. They are so Stupid,Stupid. Sheep may eat plants to the ground, but there are not enough herds to create dust bowls. I would think drought has more to do with the far reaching and long lasting dust storms!

Since this show upsets you so much with misinformation, why waste your time watching it?

You have to take climate into consideration. That show comes from New Zealand. The houses they show do not have air-conditioning or even central heating.

To get a better sense of what it feels like, I compared the seasonal temperature ranges to Maryland. Their summer seems pretty close to our late September, and winter to late October.
